I've suffered from Depression for a few year and ofc I still have it, but I've found my way of chasing it away every time that dark cloud comes over me.
So I'm gonna give a few personal tips about how to defeat depression, when it sneaks up on you.
1. Find something that makes you smile, even in your darkest times. It'll be your shield against the shadow.
2. Find someone you can talk to when the depression sneaks up on you, it's always good to speak about it to someone or something, animals are good listeners too, because they don't judge. ^^
3. Find something to vent it out with. Drawing, Painting, writing. crafting etc. It always helps to just let it all out somewhere. You don't need to show it to anyone, it's all up to you. It doesn't matter if you're a newbie at it, just get it out and don't think about perfection, that'll only drag you down.
4. Find something to cuddle with. It's always good to do a little snuggle and cuddle with something or someone. A person, plushies, Dakimakura pillows, animals etc, anything that makes you happy. Just don't cuddle and snuggle it to death.
5. Think positive thoughts. Positive thoughts are a good way to make the dark shadow go away. I usually think about good and happy memories when I get depressed, and it most of the time makes me happy.
6. Find a quote or poem that makes you happy. I have tried it a few times, and it has helped.
7. Clean up clutter. Clutter can actually alter your mood and creativity a lot. That's the reason why I don't sit up in my room and draw rght now, I prefer to have people around me and the clean kitchen. Even tho the position I'm sitting is a little painful if I sit here for hours... (Which happens a lot.)
8. Avoid things that triggers the depression. Sometimes things like sad tv series and sad music can trigger your depression, which is not something we want.
9. Find someone or something that understands you. I'm lucky enough to have my old cat as that Someone, he knows when I'm sad or happy, or even tired. He'll comfort me no matter what mood I'm in, because he can sense it.
10. (This is to everyone who are tempted to cut, or is doing it!) Do NOT give in to the temtation of self harming! Distract yourself at any cost, no matter where you are. Self harming is not the answer! I know it VERY well.
You'll regret later that you did it, even tho the temptation to do it will come up on you. I regret doing it every day.
11. (This is for those of you who's suicidal.) Don't do it, no matter your reason. There are people who loves you, even if you feel like no one is there to love you, there IS someone out there that loves you. You won't be free of pain if you do it. You'll end up hurting those around you and yourself if you give in.
I tried once, and I'm glad I failed, because of that, I do everything not to get to that level anymore.
Thanks to all these methods of chasing away the depression, I rarely get depressed these days, it also helps with my mood swings, believe it or not.
Hope this helps you all. c:

Thanks for sharing some great tips on dealing with depression. :)
I like to help people who's going through the same as I did. ^^
Though I would have to say, my cat is super judgemental when I start talking to her. if she doesn't like what I'm saying, she will meow until I shut up....or feed her...
I was suicidal earlier this month due to a hormone imbalance and it was so hard to do anything about it. My mate randomly came home with a stuffed penguin the day before my hormones leveled out and it made all the difference. It's interesting to me how one tiny act can can be enough to start the healing.
(My cat dose the same thing. His number one favorite thing to do is lay on my legs and purr. He's the best when I'm fealing down)
