As I'm updating and bringing activity back to my FA, I've decided to move all of my FAQ over from my DA.
Feel free to ask further questions if you feel something is missing!
About the Artist.
Q: Why do you go by the alias 'Ultraviolet'? Simply because it is the code-name of one of my personal characters. Though I do also have a strong affinity for purples and violets!
Q: How long have you been drawing? I've been drawing outright since I was about 2, but I first started selling my art when I was 16, as my first job was working for a tattoo artist to create flash art for him. I started taking art seriously though when I was 18 or 19.
Q: What inspires you to draw and where do you get your ideas for particular pics? I get inspiration from a lot of things, mostly from the natural world and from music. A lot of the time it's listening to music, it often conjures images in my head, be it the music itself or a lyric. Some times though, it's dreams or even nightmares, as the majority of my characters are inspired by them.
Q: What's the oldest picture you can recall drawing? A pot-bellied, snaggle-toothed dragon inside one of my books. XD Though I am told one of my first drawings was a smiley face in a perfect circle. When I was a toddler or young child, I also tortured my parents by etching witch faces into the wooden furniture! Oops!
Q: What media you use and which is your favourite? Ink, graphite, gel-pen, markers, watercolours, watercolour pencils, colour pencils, for traditional works, and Photoshop CC and Procreate when working digitally. I think I am too much of an art dork to decide on just one fave, but I really love working with Procreate at the moment.
Q: What is your favourite subject matter to illustrate? I'm sure many will think it is furries, but that isn't necessarily true. When I draw for myself I love drawing demons, satyrs, dragons, big snarly werewolves, dark, goth or occult subjects, as well as monsters.
The Creations
Q: What kind of creature is Ultraviolet? She is a creature known in my world-building as the Ukimori. They were lab-created by a scientist, Dr Hira, in an attempt to isolate genes in certain other species that have near-immortality. UV was the first, but there were nine others created before the scientist was tragically killed. There were others born since, but they remain relatively rare, as being hybrids, fertility tends to be fairly low. There are three types of Ukimori; Ukimori Majora, Having larger more prominent wings that are more capable of flight, Ukimori Minora, which have smaller wings, often unable to fly without magical assistance and a third group, often called by other Ukimori as The Wingless, lacking wings all together or only having small vestigial wings or limbs.
Q: Why is she named 'Ultraviolet'? Originally she was just a code name, 'No. 6-5'. But the scientist that created her became closely attached to her and thought that was too impersonal. After a particular test during her infancy, he discovered that she had many ultraviolet reactive markings. He felt that was a far better identifying code-name.
Q: Does she have, or go by any other names? Yes, her given name is Asha Hira. Her surname was after the scientist who created and took care of her.
Q: What inspired her creation or design? It wasn't just one thing, but initially, it was things like dragons, angels and demons (especially demons). I am fond of the nature of duality and I wanted a character that embodied that. It seemed natural to me to want to combine something that was both the embodiment of dark and light. Two creatures that tend to be associated with that, are the bat and the unicorn. Bats usually being seen as dark and in myths are often associated with evil. Unicorns, on the other hand, are generally associated with the light, good and purity. It just seemed nice to combine two very unlikely creatures, so her design is highly based on them.
Q: How much is she like you? Less than we used to when I first designed her, but we share a few physical attributes, like the things she dresses in and piercings. As far as personality, we are both quiet and keep to ourselves, but also can be pretty flirty. We also both have a strong respect for nature and an affinity for dark, mossy forests.
Q: What is Shi'Imora and how big is it? Shi'Imora refers to the world in which all the characters and creatures I create inhabit. It shares some similarities with many of Earth's biomes, however, it shares a similar size with Jupiter. It has three moons and an astral belt that encircles it. The Planet itself is alive, thinking, feeling, and can sometimes communicate with some of the inhabitants that live upon her, as she is a planet imbued with the essence of a very ancient deity.
Q: What is the runic looking symbol often seen (hidden) in your art? It's called The Immana. It is an ancient Shi'Imoran symbol, which symbolizes the divine. Its meaning is that of immortality through creativity, individuality and passion.
Art Usage, Commissions & Other Questions.
Q: Can I store your art on my computer or laptop? Of course you can, if you like my work, enjoy it offline as well!
Q: Could I post your art on my web page? You can, but please email or note me beforehand and tell me where and how it is going to be used. Also, please do not alter the image, or remove the URL and signature. As long as the signature and URL is readable so people can go back to the source if interested, then I am usually fine with people posting my art elsewhere. In very rare cases I may decline its use, in that instance, please respect my wishes and do not post without permission. <3
Q: What about posting on sites like fchan, 4chan, lulz.net or any other chans out there? I don't mind at all, as long as the URL on the image is readable, the image hasn't been altered, and source points back to my FA or Twitter. If so, then I say go for it!
Q: How about if I want to use your art for my RP character? I am sorry but, I might have to draw the line here. While you are welcome to email me and ask me about some pieces, most of my art was commissioned by other people or companies, or they are my personal characters. I'd prefer no one use my character's image as their own. While I appreciate when people like them that much, I feel it often can create confusion. I'd rather not have people confuse the actions of others for my own. I actively encourage anyone to take the time to create their own unique characters for RP. If you are not an artist yourself, and don't have a lot of money, there are certainly some talented artists on the net who are willing to do cheaper (or in a few cases, free) character sheets or concepts for people.
Q: Can I use your art for an icon on forums or similar? I am generally fine with it, but please do ask me first, a lot of art I do is commission based, so some characters might belong to someone else, and they might not appreciate you using their character's likeness, asking first will help avoid any issues. Otherwise, all I request is, please do not use any images of Ultraviolet, Lamashtu, or Azriel. Thanks! :)
Q: So, I really want you to draw something for me, do you do requests or free art? You are more than welcome to suggest general ideas or concepts to me if it's not involving personal characters. I may not always be able to draw them though, due to time constraints and prioritising paid work. However I am sorry, I do not do free art right now, I just don't have enough spare time. For example, something like, "I'd like to see you draw a unicorn knight" or "draw Yoshi with Bowser" are things I might consider doing when I have time, but I don't do requests that involve personal characters or such.
Q: What about art trades? When I have the time, I love to do them. Please email or send me a note to see if I am currently accepting art trades. I am frequently too busy, though. It is a good idea to check my profile page to see if I am accepting any or not.
Q: Do you accept commissions? Yes, though I am not always available for personal commissions, you can check with me via note or email to see if I am currently accepting any. But my profile at the top of my FA generally states if I am currently open for work or not! It's good to check there first!
Q: Is there anywhere I can easily check for updates on your art or for when you are accepting commissions and trades? Yes, you can follow my twitter (@Ukimori) or follow my telegram group ( https://t.me/joinchat/DHNafQespjWeArohgxsVfA ). I update there fairly often and it's the first place I mention when I am opening commissions and trades.
Feel free to ask further questions in the comments below! Any I find useful or seem to be common questions, I'll try and add shortly!
