Nyaasu is responsible for the awesome piece of art that accompanies my story, and it is with her permission that I post it.
Recently I was chatting with
Nyaasu about some things when she wondered if I would do a short story on one of the pieces she drew. She also hoped that I'd incorporate a rather strange dream she had the other night into it. So naturally, I did my best to comply.
P.S. Sorry for breaking the chain of "Jirachi's Mischief" stories. The next installment of that will most likely come tomorrow, or Friday at the very latest.
“Come on Ralphie! Let’s go!”
“I’m coming, I’m coming. Hold your horses.” Ralph could only smile as he watched his overly-excited little friend bounce around, the small raven-haired girl in the teal hoodie occasionally “glitching-out” as she teleported around him.
“Move it diaper baby! Quit moving at a crawl! I want to meet everyone!” News had come earlier that day that Litwak had acquired a few new arcade games. That meant new worlds would now be linked to Game Central Station, meaning lots of new colorful faces to meet. And given her recent freedom from Sugar Rush, Vanellope was quite eager to get out there and greet them.
“We’ll get there soon, Vanellope. No need to rush. It’s not like they’re going anywhere.”
“More like you aren’t going anywhere if you keep up that pace! Come on stinky, faster! You want to work on that figure, don’t you?”
“What’s wrong with my figure!?” Ralph raised his arms up as he studied his body. True, he wasn’t thin by any definition of the word, but it was what the job required. He had a hard time imagining Fix-It Felix, Jr. with a skinny version of himself messing up the apartment building. Heck, there was no way his overalls would fit if he lost weight. And he was certain he didn’t have any alternate costumes to pick from, not like a lot of these newer games.
“Nothing, chubs!” Vanellope was having a blast teasing her best friend as the sassy girl jumped around him. “Come on! Don’t you want to meet the new guys and gals with me?”
“Of course I do. Just I don’t see the rush. Everyone else is going to be talking to them, so we’ll have to wait awhile for our chance.”
“Please. You certainly seemed in a rush to meet the girls from that Dead or Alive game.”
“Th-That’s because Ryu Hayabusa is an old friend from the Ninja Gaiden days! I-I wanted to see him again, that’s all. And well, he had some friends with him, so y’know, I just thought it’d be nice to chat with them too.”
“Uh huh, sure.” Vanellope rolled her eyes, although she subconsciously looked down at her chest. “How do they walk around with such big-” Before she could finish her sentence, the girl’s form flickered. Before she knew it she was atop Ralph’s head, the girl realizing with a slight amount of embarrassment that she was hugging him.
“…now, who was telling who to move it?” This time it was Ralph’s chance to smile as he caught the little tomboy in an embarrassing situation. Naturally, Vanellope simply vaulted off of Ralph as she stuck her tongue out. Even before her little feet touched the ground she glitched again, the girl having to apologize to Dug-Dug as she appeared before the little guy.
Yet given the wide smile on Vanellope von Schweetz’s face, she had long moved past the point of fearing and hating her powers. In fact, she had embraced her glitch side, the girl starting to use her powers to make her life better. Even if they were a result of Turbo tampering with her programming, she had turned something that freak had tried to use against her into a weapon. And Ralph would always be proud of her for that.
Sure, she maybe won a few too many races thanks to her glitch nature, but after all she had been through, the kid deserved it.
“So Ralph,” Vanellope was once again at her friend’s side, her wide amber eyes full of their usual curiosity. “What games should we visit this week? There are so many I’ve yet to see! What about Tapper’s? Am I old enough to get in there?”
“Well, considering that it’s the version that’s only allowed to serve root beer, I think you’ll be-”
“Ooh, what about Dance Dance Revolution? Wait, how does that differ from Dance Central?”
“Beats me. I’ve never really had the natural rhythm needed for-”
“Ooh, how about House of the Dead? I hear that game is really scary, right?”
“Maybe if the voice acting wasn’t so bad. Look Miss President, I’d appreciate it if you didn’t cut me off when I’m trying to tell you these things, okay?”
“Aye aye, Admiral Fartfeathers.” Ralph could only roll his eyes as the girl gave him a mock salute. At least fixing Sugar Rush hadn’t caused the loveable little girl to change in anyway. Well, save for allowing her to leave her game.
“Hey, we’re here!” Vanellope glitched out again as she teleported over the crowd of characters gathered around the gateway to one of the new games. Ralph sighed as he followed after her, although as he caught a glimpse of what game he was dealing with, his jaw dropped.
“Mario Kart? I didn’t know Mario was into that sort of thing. Heh, guess that means Vanellope has some competition.”
“Ralph, Ralph, over here! This is Princess Peach! She claims to be Mario’s on-again-off-again girlfriend who constantly bakes cakes for him! I love cake!” Vanellope bounced about even as she shook the blonde’s hand, the Princess of the Mushroom Kingdom clearly not knowing how to react as she simply smiled.
“Huh, don’t remember if Mario ever mentioned her…hey, does that mean there are two Marios around here now? What happens if they meet-”
Ralph’s train-of-thought was thoroughly derailed as he watched a rather buxom ninja girl introduce herself to Luigi, the blushing plumber happily shaking Kasumi’s hand. “Geez, graphics really have improved these days.” With a stupid grin on his face Ralph watched as the orange-haired girl smiled at the bumbling plumber. Maybe he didn’t have a chance with her, but watching her from afar was more than enough.
“Major Body Odor? Captain Cooties? Come on Ralph, you in there?” It was only on Vanellope’s third bounce before Ralph’s face that the man seemed to realize she was trying to get his attention.
“Huh? Oh yeah, hi there, Princess. How are you liking it here so far?”
Even as Ralph and Peach began their introductions, Vanellope’s eyes followed the path that Ralph’s own had taken a few moments before. And as she found herself looking upon the large-breasted fighting game character once again, the girl felt a strange twinge in her coding. She wasn’t jealous was she? Sure, she certainly liked Ralph, but not like that…right?
“Hey Vanellope, where are you going?” Ralph was rather taken aback as the little girl started to run off, although he was relieved to see that she wasn’t in tears as she spun around to look at him.
“Oh! I, umm, forgot that I had a welcoming present back in Sugar Rush! Be right back!” As much as Vanellope liked Ralph, he wasn’t the smartest character in existence. He’d buy her lie, and that meant she could have a few moments to be alone. She needed to understand what exactly she had just experienced.
When she was certain she was all alone, Vanellope jumped onto one of Game Central Station’s many benches and let out a sigh. “Geez, what does she have that I don’t? Aside from the massive boobs that jiggle WAY too much? Did they really make a whole physics engine for those things?”
Vanellope shook her head before looking back to the crowded entrance to Mario Kart. It was difficult for her to describe how she was feeling as she watched Ralph from afar; he was her best friend, there was no denying that. But did she feel something else for him? The sort of thing that had led to Felix and Calhoun getting married? No, that was too much…wasn’t it?
“Ahh, poor child. A kindred spirit, trapped in the throes of love. Such a sad, sad sight.”
“Woah there buddy, I don’t remember asking for your opinion.” Vanellope’s little form shifted as she went from sitting to standing atop the bench in an instant. To her side sat a rather lanky older man, a twirled white moustache resting just under his large round nose. “Who are you anyway? I don’t remember seeing you around here before. Not that I’ve been here long myself.”
“I’m not surprised, considering I’m brand new. I came over from that game.” The man pointed his wand toward a new game world, Vanellope straining her eyes to see it from a distance.
“Hmm…Morph Quest? Pretty dumb name if you ask me.”
“It isn’t dumb!” The man said, suddenly looking quite defensive as he crossed his arms over his chest. “It’s a fine game created long ago! We are, how do the young ones say…retro! Yes, that’s it! Why, you should all be blessed to have us here!”
“Relax, relax! I mean, what’s in a name, right? So, you’re a new guy huh? Then why aren’t you over there where all the fanfare is?” Looking back at the entrance to Morph Quest, Vanellope made out a few new faces, namely a knight in shining armor and a princess greeting their new neighbors together. “You aren’t going to get a chance like this again, you know?”
“Hmph! It’s not like I don’t want to be over there or anything. It’s just I’m not exactly…good with people. Or popular for that matter.”
“Well, I can sort of understand the last one, but you seem able to hold a conversation with me-”
“We’re getting off track here! You are in love with someone, no? That is what I, Pugsly the Magician, have been able to determine.”
“You’re a magician, really?” Vanellope said in open-mouthed awe, Pugsly seeming rather pleased with her reaction. “Wow! I never would have figured that out, what with your hat, tuxedo, and wand! That’s a totally original design!”
“…you’re mocking me, aren’t you?”
“Oh, don’t get your diaper in a bunch. I’m just teasin’.” Vanellope giggled to herself, even if it was clear that Pugsly didn’t exactly appreciate her sarcasm. “And what kind of name is Pugsly anyway? Was your programmer super uncreative when he came up with that one?”
“I’ll have you know that my position fits me quite well given what my role in Morph Quest is, thank you very much.” The magician turned away, clearly upset with the playful little girl who was now having a good deal of fun. Unfortunately for Pugsly, it was all at his expense.
“Oh really? And what’s that.”
“Why, I’m the villain! A man cursed with a fate of never having anyone-”
“Oh, suck it up!”
“What did you say!?”
“I said suck it up! My best friend over there is also a villain, but he’s learned to cope with it. Hey, maybe you should start attending Bad-Anon! I hear that helped Ralph a little bit, and he still attends-”
“Hah! As if any of those villains can compare to me! My powers far outrank anything those insignificant fools are capable of!” Vanellope could only blink and watch Pugsly as the magician began to laugh maniacally, the girl seeing more and more why he was so unpopular.
“…okay. So, what exactly are your powers if you don’t mind me asking?”
“I’m glad you asked! Morph Quest details the epic struggle between myself and the foolish knight Kevin! As the game begins, I curse him into becoming a dog while I kidnap his girlfriend, the lovely Princess Flower.”
“Princess Flower? Really?”
“Don’t you dare mock her! She is far more radiant than you could ever hope to be!”
“…uh huh, sure. Continue.” Vanellope feared that if she rolled her eyes as much as she thought she needed to, it might end up hampering her vision. And given that she was a driver, that probably wasn’t a very good idea.
“Anyway, at the start of each level, I use my powers of transformation and hypnosis to start changing the Princess into an obedient dog for me to have as my pet-”
“Wait, wouldn’t you want her as your girlfriend rather than as your pet? And why would you turn her into a dog? Since you also turned Kevin into a dog, doesn’t that just-”
“Stop asking questions! Geez, you are such a rude child.”
“Well I might be rude, but at least I’m not stupid.” Vanellope said with a smug little smile on her face, the girl seeming quite entertained as the man’s face turned more and more red.
“ANYWAY! Time and time again, the players have failed to beat me! Yet it matters not! Whenever a game ends, my beloved Princess Flower is allowed to transform back and storm away from me to be with that knight! And I’m left all alone! It’s just as bad as being bested in the last level!”
“Tough luck. Hmm, maybe if you told your concerns to them, they’d hang out with you more. I mean, just tell them that it’s all part of the job and-”
“Part of the job? But I do ever so enjoy doing it! Seeing Princess Flower’s face change, fur cover her body! Oh, it is so exhilarating!”
“…right…look Pugsly, no offense, but I can see why not many people like you.”
That seemed to be the final straw, the enraged magician now pointing his wand at the President of Sugar Rush as he pulled out a small pendulum from his coat and began to wave it in front of her. “Impudent child! I’ll show you!”
“Aaaand what exactly do you think you’re doing?” Vanellope rolled her eyes, deciding to humor the magician. After all, thanks to her glitchy nature, the girl thought she was pretty much immune to anything that might alter her mind or coding. She had no fears of being hypnotized as a result, but thought she’d play along for kicks.
“I’m going to change you into a dog the very same way I change Princess Flower into a dog! Now girl, are you a human?”
“Yep, sure am.” Vanellope said, the girl now well aware why this man had no fans.
“No no no, you’re not a human. You’re a dog.”
“Nope, pretty sure I’m a human.” Vanellope felt a slight itch in her ear, one of the girl’s hands brushing it before returning to her side. She had done so too soon, however, for her ears were growing wider. The shape of a butterfly’s wings came to Pugsly’s mind as he continued to change the girl, although Vanellope seemed blissfully unaware of it. For while her glitch nature left her unphased by his hypnosis, it also allowed for her body to change without the girl even realizing it. Until the spell was broken, she’d be under the impression she was still human.
“No no no, you’re a dog.” Pugsly was glad he was getting results as he watched Vanellope’s body change, her now larger ears starting to grow long black fur that proceeded to spread to the rest of her face. Even as the fur began to coat her forehead and cheeks, the small girl’s mouth and nose pushed out as a distinctly canine muzzle took shape. The girl’s once-button nose transformed, becoming more rounded in shape as it pushed forward. It was much more sensitive now, Vanellope sniffing the air instinctively a few times. Even if she still failed to recognize her changes despite some of them happening before her very eyes, her body seemed to be acting in a way more appropriate.
“Nope, still human. By the way, you smell really weird! Maybe they should call you pungent Pugsly or something like that, because you stink!” She had her little laugh, even as her teeth grew pointier in her shifting mouth, her tongue lolling out as she panted. Yet Vanellope still remained oblivious to such behaviors. Even as white fur descended from the space between her eyes down to her neck, the President was none the wiser to her change.
“Shut up! I-I mean, no no no, you’re a dog!”
“Do you really need to say ‘no’ three times? Pretty sure I got the message after the first.” Once again Vanellope felt a little itch in her ears, the girl wanting to get at it. By this point, however, her entire body was shifting, her neck shrinking down a bit even as her skeletal structure reorganized itself. She was starting to look more and more like a dog’s with every passing second, although her size didn’t change: Vanellope was already pretty tiny, after all. Her hands and feet began to change in a similar manner, the girl’s little black boots tearing open as she began to develop paws. At the cost of a single digit from each of her hands and feet, fur began to grow upon them, the warm white hair making Vanellope’s new form incredibly fluffy. Without even realizing it, she used one of her feet-paws to scratch behind the itchy ear, Vanellope panting happily as she did so. Even if she didn’t know why she was so happy.
“No no no, you’re a dog.”
“Are you done with this already?” Black fur descended upon Vanellope’s back as she wondered about the purpose of the magician’s words. Her hoodie, skirt, and stockings vanished as Pugsly wiggled his wand about, the girl failing to realize that she was now naked. Her pink flesh was soon consumed by a wave of white fluff that finished coating the girl, the magician seeming quite pleased with his work as he gazed upon the panting Papillon girl, sugary sweets dotting some of her fur. The girl must have been quite something, for even as her new fluffy black tail pushed out from her rear, little candies appeared around it. Even as her ponytail fell away as her messy black hair draped itself on her head, the band of licorice that had tied it up moved down her body to wrap around her new, actual tail.
“No no no, you’re a dog.”
At last, the girl had had enough. “Okay, yeah, sure. I’m a dog, happy?”
“Quite.” With a satisfied smile, the magician took his leave. And as soon as he and his magical objects were out of sight, Vanellope seemed to realize what had happened.
“W-Wait, what happened!?” The girl cried out, now able to see the shiny black nose at the front of her face. Heck, hearing itself seemed different due to how her ears had changed, not to mention that her nose was overwhelmed due to its new sensitivity. “Hey, get back in there!” She commanded her tongue, even if the long muscle seemed more content to hang out of her mouth and occasionally drip saliva onto the ground. When she turned to look for the man who had changed her, she saw Pugsly rushing back into his game, giggling maniacally as both those from his world and those from others looked on in confusion.
“Geez, guess I was sort of asking for this, huh?” Vanellope said to herself, taking her transformation well all things considered. Maybe it was because she realized how cute she was, the black-and-white dog girl able to see how cute she was as she gazed upon her transformation in a trash bin. Upon catching sight of her tail, the girl felt an incredibly urge to chase it, the happy puppy enjoying running in circles for a few moments before she started to get dizzy. She wasn’t even surprised that she was able to perfectly run around on all fours now, the girl seeming to know that this was how she’d need to move around from now on. After all, while her paws were cute, they weren’t exactly good for driving. But she could worry about that later. “Wow, I’m even cuter if that’s possible! I bet if I didn’t have a name, I’d get called Oreo or something like that!”
“I wonder what Ralph will have to say about this!” Vanellope dashed over to the gateway to Mario Kart, several characters quickly moving out of the excitable pup’s way as she let out a cute bark. “Coming through, talking dog here! Hey Ralph, check me out!”
“V-Vanellope!?” The last thing Ralph had heard from the girl was that she had gone back to Sugar Rush to get a welcoming present. And now here she was, a cute little dog with small pieces of candy sticking to parts of her. “Wh-What happened to you!?” Thankfully the little dog could still speak, otherwise Ralph would have been completely in the dark.
“Well, it might be a little embarrassing to talk about here! So come with me, okay?” She said, wiggling her little tail before running off. Ralph took a moment to simply blink before he gave chase, excusing himself as he maneuvered through the crowd.
“…so you egged him on!?”
“Hey, he deserved it. That guy is a creep.” The dog explained as she sat on the bench, panting happily as she looked up at the man before her. Her tail seemed to have a mind of its own, the fluffy limb wagging about without any care for her situation.
“This isn’t good. We need to-hey!” Ralph said, picking the puppy up by the scruff of her neck as she glitched onto his head.
“Sorry! Couldn’t help my-hey Ralph! Look at your nose!”
“My nose? What are you…oh, you’ve got to be kidding me.” The brunette’s massive hands now touched his nose, feeling the now rounded, slightly wet surface that seemed more sensitive than ever before.
“Oops…guess when I glitched onto you I sort of…erm, sorry!” Vanellope apologized, although she studied Ralph’s changing body with interest as she was placed back on the bench.
“Oh this is just great! First you’re changed into a little puppy, and now I’m going to be a dog too!” He complained, watching as fur covered up his large hands as they shifted into rather shaggy paws. Brown seemed to be Ralph’s color, for already chocolate-colored fur was starting to grow up his arms while his skeletal structure shifted. He didn’t remain on his legs for very long, Ralph wearing the grumpiest of faces as he was forced onto his front and rear paws. It wasn’t a painful transformation, but he certainly wasn’t enjoying it.
Vanellope, on the other hand, seemed rather entertained as Ralph’s clothes vanished, although at this point there wasn’t much to cover. “Well, look on the bright side, Ralphie! Now you’re ugly, smelly, and you have fleas! Well, maybe not the last one yet, but knowing you it’s only a matter of time, you big fluffy dog you!”
“…that’s supposed to cheer me up?” Ralph asked as his face finished pushing into a distinctly canine muzzle, his ears now flopping at the sides of his head as he came to resemble a Leonberger more and more. Thick layers of fur coated the grumpy dog’s body as his much more excitable companion ran circles around him, wanting to get a good look at her friend’s new body. A cute little bark even left Vanellope’s lips as she ran into Ralph’s newly sprouted tail.
“Maybe! But hey, this isn’t so bad! Come on Ralph, try and catch me!” The dog said as she jumped into the air before glitching a few feet away as she began to take off.
“Vanellope, stop fooling around!” In an impressive display of speed, Ralph lunged forward, using his new muzzle to pick the puppy up by the scruff of her neck once more, the little Papillon struggling with her paws as she tried to get free.
“Hey, put me down!” She whined, grumbling a bit as her glitch powers failed to activate as she willed them.
“This is serious!” Ralph bellowed once he finally placed the girl back down on the bench. “How are our games going to function with us like this!? You have it easy since Sugar Rush uses a character rotation system, but what about me? How glitched do you think people will think my game is when they see a big dog clumsily trying to break windows? And we just finished getting the cast of Q*bert into their new homes!”
“Oh…umm, I guess I see your point. Sorry Ralphie, I guess I sort of messed up, didn’t I?” The puppy whimpered a bit as she realized what she had done, the gravity of their situation finally hitting her. What if both Sugar Rush and Fix-It Felix, Jr. were unplugged as a result? She and her friends would be homeless, as would all of those currently living with Ralph. The girl’s amber eyes looked upon the ground now as Vanellope tried to hold back the flow of tears she knew was coming.
“…hey, don’t look so sad. Come on, what does Felix always say? We can fix this, Vanellope.” Ralph moved to the puppy’s side as he gave her a little nuzzle. “I’m sorry, I’m just still not used to having a tail and a really big nose like this.” Ralph did his best to comfort the girl as he let her rest her furry little form against his much larger one. He would have pet her with one of his paws, but stopped upon realizing that one of the huge things was roughly the size of her body.
“…right, thanks Ralph.” Her spirits now restored, the black-and-white pup jumped onto him as she gave his cheek a big lick. “S-Sorry, I just don’t want to mess anything up.”
“It’s alright. Now, where exactly is the guy who changed you? I want to change back as soon as I can. Geez, it’s hard to keep this tongue contained.” Ralph said as the muscle lolled out of his mouth, a few trickles of saliva falling onto the floor.
Vanellope giggled a bit as she watched Ralph try to fight his new animal side. “He said he was from that new game Morph Quest.”
“Alright, then I guess we know where we’re going. Come on, President Puppy. Let’s go change back to normal.”
“Way ahead of you, Sergeant Slobber.”
