There is two stories to this.
One, he is blind in some stories. He had his eyes ripped out.
Second, he wears it because his vision is sensitive to light. Sometimes he will remove the blindfold, but keeping it exposed to direct light, colors, ect can overwhelm him. He usually resorts to keeping his eyes covered.
