Well, guess who was in the cinema yesterday? Yes. Me.
So. Let's talk Alien: Covenant
Having a "normal", not hyped or oversimplified opinion is rare these days it seems.
But to me it was an OK movie. Not good, but also not bad. It had it's problems, but there were enough elements to it that I found inspirational and fresh (really liked the atmosphere in the first half) - also awkward and strange to watch, but I happen to like that in movies.
My personal biggest Problems with it was the CGI (which was "too fast and videogamy") and some stupid unprofessional behavior from the crew. (I kept saying to my husband: "Man, this company has some serious safety hazard problems!" during the movie.) Also a bit slow in the middle part (the pacing was kinda off it seems)...and writing problems, that had to happen because of this convoluted nonsensical franchise. The "twist" ending was more then just predictable and I feel like the Alien-Fan-service did the movie more harm then good (if only for the expectation the general movie-goer had)
But I still like what they TRIED to do, focusing more on the artificial life/creation aspect instead of the "movie monster" xenomorph. Also, I love robots...so this movie was something i could enjoy greatly. Thanks to Mr. Fassbender.
So long story short: I like the idea behind it, but fanservice for alien Fanboys and standard hollywood filmmaking made it into a mediocre film. Also don't like the "videogamey" CGI and the pacing was a bit slow in the middle. Also predictable ending.

I would have liked a sequel to Prometheus rather than a new Alien movie. Prometheus was very flawed, but I enjoyed seeing past events and getting to know more about the engineers and the xenomorphs' origin. If they had just made a better movie I would have been up for it.
But everyone cried about the lack of aliens so now we have more aliens killing another uncharacteristically dimwitted space crew.

The aliens always look better when it is a guy in a suit and you have puppetmasters at work. I think the new Star Wars realized this too which is why they went back to Jim Henson special effects. CGI is good for far away stuff and small special effects like ship thrusters but terrible for close up stuff. Occasionally it works out like Gollum from Lord of The Rings but that's mostly because of the good motion acting by Andy Serkis which make you look past the imperfections of the CGI. I will probly wait for this on video. Personally, I like one of the stories in a comic from Dark Horse where a scientist built an android that looked like an alien to infiltrate a hive and learn more about the aliens. It was funny because the android was very polite and it looked strange when the Alien android would play fetch with the Labrador dog.
I personally don't mind CGI - But the original Jurassic Park shows that MOVEMENT is one of the most important part about it. If the movement is off, the render/light composition etc. can't fix it.
I also think that Puppets just for Puppets sake are not the solution either. If done wrong, it can look shitty to. (even if i personally think a shitty puppet is more charming in a B-Movie then shitty CGI X,D)
The Alien Comics are a funny universe XD It's trashy, but loveable in it's own way.

You're right about the movement in CGI.
Jurassic Park's CGI animation is so good and stands the test of time to this day because it wasn't actually all computer-generated. It was animated using a stop-motion puppet that would transfer all the movements the animator made on it into the digital model, which is why the animals seem to have realistic weight and limits to how their limbs move. It is incredibly hard to make a computer-generated model move realistically from scratch. (This is also why the motion capture of Gollum still works, it's basically the same process, just on a live person instead of a puppet.)

Yeah, but i don't think it matters if you animate right in the Computer or with Stop Motion (that is transferred to a computer) the big difference is what the animators themselves use as a reference (and their experience. The Stop Motion Guys in Jurassic Park are true masters with 20+ years of experience). In Jurassic Park they looked at REAL animals (birds, lions, reptiles etc.) to make the Dinosaurs in the movie look real as well. In Jurassic World it's clear that they looked at Jurassic Park and said "make it cooler and faster, it's scarier" and didn't think about real animals AT ALL.
To be fair, the ending was predictable because it was a prequel, so we knew how it was gonna go...XD
I agree with most of what you said. The CGI got a little spotty at times and the pacing seemed off too, but I bet it was because of how much they wanted to cram in. They tried to make it a sequel to Prometheus and a prequel to the rest of the Alien franchise, trying to find a balance to wedge it's way in the middle of these. I enjoyed the movie, but it wasn't fantastic.

You never know until you look at it. There's some test footage of the original alien movie of the guy in a crappy test-suit just walking around on the set and it's still pretty damn creepy-looking. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vFpgu1L1YIc It all depends on the actor you have performing as the Alien.
I never said I want a Guy in a Suit instead of CGI. My problems with the animation in this movie are that the Alien just move to fast to be scary. The original Alien was scary not because it was a fucking roadrunner on speed, but because it's movements were deliberate and suspenseful. Even in Aliens it works, with faster Aliens that move in packs, but their animation was still grounded in physics and reality, which made them feel real and gave them a "presents". You can fasten up the Alien in CG Animation to make more complicated scene and I have no problem with that (all for it to be honest! I think it was about time we see what an Alien out in the open could do), but they just didn't think of what looks right, but what looks "cool". And failed.
I don't think they failed. They went with the concept that xenomorphs can be agile and ferocious as well as stealthy and patient at the same time. Exactly like in Alien: Isolation or even in real life such as lions and cheetahs. Scott was just held back by what tech he had to work with during that time period. Now he can really give the "perfect organism" abilities he wanted it to have. Including those Alien comics. But, in the end I enjoyed what I saw and can't wait to see more of Scott's vision in more sequels.
The interesting thing is the ending of the movie doesn't setup for the beginning of Alien unless we assume things happened after Covenant. Ah well, I can still watch and enjoy Alien and Aliens w/o the prequels. My biggest peeve is the struggle is once again quickly over after every alien encounter.
I'm more upset about just how much Ridley Scott decided to fuck with the lore. The Xenos aren't scary anymore now that we know their incredibly dull origin story, not to mention the really stupid way in which they handled the Engineers in this movie and completely ignored many of the questions proposed by Prometheus. Also, the Neomorph deserved far more screen time than they gave it; after all the hyping via promotional material, it felt like a fizzle instead of a bang.
At this point, I'd prefer James Cameron to take the reigns and make this franchise fun again.

I loved it, I can understand why some or more didn't like it, and I could point out flaws here and there. But I did enjoy the aspect of the robots of it as well as the introduction of the Neomorphs. My only regret it didn't have was a possible interaction with the classical Xenomorph and the new neomorph. Would they be out to tear each other apart or worked together r just flat out ignored one another. That was the one thing I wanted to see. Still I enjoyed it very much.
Having not seen Covenant yet, but remembering Prometheus and seeing the trailers... Honestly? I wish they would just make a synthetic origin story movie. They clearly want to, but they keep trying to tell it in between just your general Alien-inspired horror movie (plus they keep forgetting Alien was as much a psychological horror as it was an action / body horror), and I think the two plots are fighting.
Just my (uninformed) opinion though. Worth every penny you paid for it. XD

I kinda dipped more on disappointing, more or less because the alien to me always represented a terrifying mystery, but the origins of the alien being revealed in covenant was more or less a disappointment to me, not only in how it was executed but more or less it took away what i always felt like the alien was. That's just me though.
