“My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic” aired in 2010. This was the year I turned 30, moved to take on a new job in the Harrisburg area of Pennsylvania, and got married. Our son was three years old and we lived a minimum 3.5 hour drive away from family and friends.
Starting in 2011 a number of friends started to insist I watch MLP: FiM. Now my reluctance was not so much because it was MLP but because of how I felt discouraged by numerous Transformers reboots that had left me feeling extremely disappointed. MLP was one of the very first shows I can remember as a kid due to how I must have chosen to rent Rescue At Midnight Castle back in 1984, got upset when my parents had to return the tape, and consequently got the VHS tape for my 5th birthday. So, deep down, I didn’t want a good memory ruined by another poor reboot of a show from my childhood.
Thanks to my pal, Toroth, I was provided with a DVD for the first four episodes. Because he took the time to send it I took the time to watch it. Consequently I was hooked after Friendship Is Magic – Part 1.
During this year, my ability to enjoy MLP was disrupted due to a surgery that went bad in May. I bleed into my eye and was not able to see the world outside of a red haze for a month and had to wait two more months to not see yellow. When I saw normally again, I eagerly started watching MLP with my four year old son.
2012 got me totally hooked on the series. My son and I would watch the episodes as they came out and were rerun on The Hub. We also had fun watching Sweetie Bot from Friendship Is Witchcraft. It was lots of laughs and a most delightful time. However a surgical complication at the end of July would keep me from seeing much of anything for nearly seven months.
Before moving onto 2013, I must touch on how I almost got to BronyCon 2012. Unfortunately it wasn’t meant to be. Thankfully my friend, Toroth, was attending and he got me some signatures. Most notably of Lauren Faust. It is also thanks to Toroth that I proudly have a program from all eight of the summer BronyCon’s.
2013 heralded an unbelievable recovery from six surgeries to repair my eye after it, for lack of better words, imploded. My eyesight was worse but I at least had enough to start genuinely collecting the MLP: Trading Cards by Enterplay LLC. The last set of cards I had completed was The Haunted Woods expansion for Neopets. As an interesting aside, Enterplay made Neopets trading cards that, I think, helped serve as the foundation for those for MLP: FiM. I’ve since given this collection to my fellow Neopian friend, Doodle Noodle.
2013 was also when Snowdrop was released. This MLP fan animation would forever change my life because, even after making it through a time of total blindness, I still was not ready to accept that I’d be 100% sightless one day. Snowdrop changed all that with the one line from Snowdrop’s mom to her blind daughter, “Don’t worry. You won’t need your eyes to find your place in the world.”.
Iron Priest and I also became friends during this particular year and decided to attend BronyCon due to how close it was to where we live since it had moved to Baltimore. My son was six years old at this time and there were just so many wonderful memories of our time together at BC. You can even see him in two YouTube videos from BC 2013 as he speaks at the Silly Filly Studios, makers of Snowdrop, panel along with being one of the first in line to ask a question during one of the Voice Actor panels. (He does a great Apple jack impersonation and gets Cathy Weseluck, Spike, to go into character to say, “Thanks, dad!”)
BronyCon 2013 is what inspired me to start Coping With disabilities Through Pony, which became Coping With Limitations Through Pony and is now Coping With Limitations Through The Arts. There is a tremendous amount of achievements this initiative has resulted in but it is best experienced through the folders found at www.facebook.com/hapotales (m.facebook.com/hapotales for those using screen reading software.
2014 was when I was bullied out of my job, was forced to move as a result of rising rent prices coupled with unemployment, and when our first panel and its subsequent local and national efforts took place. The most notable being to contribute MLP product to a local school for individuals on the spectrum who took a lot of pride in earning MLP merch for making their IEP goals.
2015 was the last year I could watch an entire season of MLP with my own eyes. It is also when another disabilities rights advocate took CWLTP to Midwest Ciderfest! Knowing others were excited to use the concept towards advocacy was a most wonderful thing that continues to this day thanks to our latest team member, wayward Pony. This year also allowed me to partner with the Harrisburg Autism Society to bring two aspiring students to BC to present and then share their achievement before the organization. It was a very proud moment for me to know how something I started was really making a notable difference.
2016 was the year I endured multiple surgeries and minor procedures that were not successful in saving my sight. However I did have enough vision to see Flurry Heart and kind of make out Gabby Griffon and the season finale. This was also the only time the early releases in Canada helped me as, without them, I would not have physically seen any of the Season 6 finale. Another great point is that Saphy officially joined CWLTP along with the founder of Panda Inc. who presented with us and went on to write a book about how cosplay allows those with limitations to work past social anxiety. She has since presented her findings at other conventions and is actively a part of AnthroCon.
2017 was my first full year without sight. However MLP still played a huge part in helping me transition from a life with sight to one with none. I started writing a short story series in which I used my character, Yosh, in a MLP setting to work through going blind. These tales can be found over at Fim Fiction starting with “Follow The Twinkles” at https://www.fimfiction.net/story/35.....w-the-twinkles.
I was very proud to now have an iPhone because it empowered me to watch MLP through the purchase of episodes that could be easily accessed using iOS’ built-in accessibility features. I missed out on ‘seeing’ many great moments but am still delighted to have my imagination to put all I could together through words and memory. Many friends helped to describe what I could not make out through the dialogue, too. The 2017 presentation of CWLTP brought in Doodle Noodle while being my opportunity to ‘walk-the-walk’ of all I’ve touched on in our 2014 thru 2016 presentations by showing that total blindness wouldn’t stop me from living a fulfilling life.
2018 was when I finally found a new job and had my marriage end. However this did not detour the efforts of CWLTP as we put on a very last minute presentation, because we were invited late to join BC. This was also the year when Wayward Pony officially joined the team. (Posts relating to CWLTP on “Hapo Tales” now go as Wall Posts due to how I have yet to figure out how to properly manage folders with Facebook under zero-sight conditions)
2019 was the canon end for MLP. It was also when I needed to have my right eye physically removed, finalized an amicable divorce, and achieved the greatest goal ever for CWLTP. Through many months of hard effort by Wayward Pony and Saphy, we finally made good on our effort to make a version of the animation that assisted me in accepting total blindness, Snowdrop. You can check it out by going to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7PB.....v0aI&t=56s.
Now, as FiM has reached its end, I am proud to share how Wayward Pony is taking over CWLTP / CWLTA as I now am continuing the efforts as a part of my company’s ‘Diversity & Inclusion’ team. So the magic of friendship is definitely set to continue to make a difference many years after the show comes to a close.
The picture to this post is significant as Spike was my initial draw to even give the show a chance. I then learned at Lauren faust’s 2019 panel at BronyCon how his body design was meant to be ‘toddler-like’ with a ‘diaper butt’. Thanks to Saphy, we have a young Spike now toddling about his room at the Sparkle household doing some ‘vacuuming’ to show how much of a helper he can be to Twilight. The room, big surprise, is largely decorated with books and other learning materials thanks to Twilight. However Shining Armor did try to help Spike have a little fun by letting him borrow his Brutus Force plush.
There is so much more, although this itself was a lot, to share on how MLP made my 30s the best decade of my life. Getting married and divorced stunk, being bullied out of a job was awful, losing my eyesight was terrifying, and having an eye removed was discouraging. However all the gains as a result of those lovable pastel ponies and their pals more than made up for what I lost. Thank you MLP and thank you to all my friends for joining me in this epic journey in the building of my own self-esteem and worth as I try very hard to ‘pay the kindness forward’ with my ongoing efforts for advocacy.

We can all thank FIM by never forgetting the wonderful things it gave us, and carrying it's memories into the future.
Exactly! :)
This is why I borrowed inspiration from Doodle to make this write-up. I figure putting all MLP got me through down would help show how the magic of friendship is never gone so long as we don't forget how to apply it going forward. Our Equestrian friends got us started and we can help ensure it never ends.
Thanks for being a part of this journey with me, Leon. I know pony helped us come together through our shared liking o Spike. I look forward to reading your story and writing more adventures with our characters.
Also, as an aside, Lanny shared a pic of a new character you made. I believe she is a snake-like creature? I'd love to hear more, if you don't mind, through a note. :)

It’s the end of an era, my how time flies. I’ll never forget that fateful night on December 15, 2011 when I realized I was a Brony because that was the very night I discovered that there were others like me!
Oh, wow! So you've been on the Friendship Express for a long time, too? I think back on being able to watch te show and what it was like as it started before becoming quite full of depth and character development.
December 15th is also a big day for me, too. This is because it was December 15th, 2016 I was fully diagnosed as no longer having any usable / repairable eyesight. It was quite a blow but also finally gave me some peace from needing to attend seemingly non-stop eye appointments and fearing surgeries. Plus my medication load is far-far lower now.
On a related note, which goes with CWLTP, is how I am eager for December 19th of this year. The reason is that my sister, born 3 years and 4 days after me, has the exact same birth condition that took my sight. HOWEVER, if she can still see on December 19th, it will show that what doctors gleamed from me allowed her to see longer than I. This, to me, is a victory.
I thank all our friends for helping me to still feel welcome and a part of this wonderful place and MLP even after my lights went out. Friendship truly is magic. :)

It's not over yet! Inside we have them and one day the next chapter will turn and the new patch will welcome in open hooves arms etc. Keep alive and share the meaning of the show. Friendship is magic!
Yep, yep, yep! Where one story ends another begins. So let us look forward to G5 while creating adventures for what may have been and could be.
Creativity is magic and sharing this magic helps build long-lasting friendships. :)

True to that! But wonder what the new Spike will be like, or what gender ether way Spike will always be my fav no matter what! *hugs*
A female Spike would be most interesting to see. They could go with a violet and orange look perhaps? ? Though colors tend to appear a little different with CGI over the style in which has been used for MLP from G1 to present.
I'll be looking forward to how everyone describes G5. Having a CGI design will certainly make for a lot of difference. I'd really like to see them reference past generations.Perhaps create a new version of the CMC through characters from 'My Little Pony tales' while bringing in some baddies in G1 that have yet to be rekindled?I would also like to see Minty come back with her hardcore love of socks. :)
Perhaps, for Spike, he'd befriend a pony while traveling the land with an actual mother and father figure? It would be neat to see him / her interact between ponies and dragons.
Definitely a lot of possibilities. Though, as said, Spike is best pony. :)

Indeed, and maybe we can find out who were his parents is they never told us. And at this point it's best he try to find out.
I know how you feel. We all are in a place where we wonder what will be next along with if what is next will keep us all together like FiM did. I'm keeping optimistic unless Hasbro decides to force the new generation over allowing it to develop through the natural love and appreciation Faust breathed life into.
The CGI element, so I've heard it will be, kind of worries me. However you never know. I'll be keeping my fingers crossed.

As I believe I mentioned before, I found Season 1 to be so bad with characters and morals that I didn’t feel it was taking the message of friendship seriously. The Season 1 finale exemplified everything that felt wrong with the show. Overall, there was far too much mischief that got a free pass. Season 2 had a lot of the same trouble.
Finally, the systemic exclusion of boys from the main cast — especially the leadership and the Elements of Harmony — made me feel that boys were being presented as deficient. The abuse of Spike as a character only reinforced this message. The message that dragons are powered by greed also sent a racialist message. Overall, it felt that Spike was a lesser being.
The introduction of Snips and Snails felt like an even grosser insult toward boys — from their names to how dumb they acted. That was one more strike.
For seven years, I steered clear of the show. When the movie came out, I was captivated by the visuals — but I held back for several months. When I finally did see the movie, it was about the most inspirational movie I’d ever seen. I finally started to feel that maybe I can look up to these girls. Despite at least one moment of Spike abuse, he felt like a little mentor for Twilight when she felt in despair. Moreover, there seemed to be no gender barrier in Capper and the male pirates befriending the Mane 6.
Finally, I learned about the Student Six. I think I was just about to watch Season 9 anyway — but learning about Sandbar and Gallus made me really want to watch Seasons 8 and 9. From there, I found the strength to go to Seasons 6 and 7. That was when I learned about Sunburst, and I learned that Spike was finally made a proper ambassador of friendship.
I got to see the rise of Thorax as the new ruler of the changelings. I got to see Spike lead the way in helping reform the changelings — and in sowing the seeds to reform the dragons. Back to Season 8, Smolder taught Spike that dragons can grow up without giving into greed — and that greed-induced growth is not actually normal.
I don’t understand why many fans like Seasons 1 and 2 better than Seasons 8 and 9. I found the message of friendship far superior in the last two seasons than the first two.
I feel that the Student Six are surprisingly slow to catch on — along with the whole concept of a school of friendship. I feel that diversity is grossly under-appreciated with many of the original fans. Moreover, the School of Friendship feels like the secular equivalent of a church — and maybe such a message of friendship is actually too strong to many of the original fans.

All good points. Though the one that stands out is you noting how the School Of Friendship is like a church.
Do you feel that the Star Ponies world will pray to The Creator Of Friendship as part of their daily start to class?
Gallus is one of my favorite new additions. Being a dragon fan, I'd gravitate to Smolder but, of the six, I like Gallus the most. He is cynical by nurture and becomes more from nature and embracing that which only Gabby, and maybe Gilda, were able to do.
Spike and Gabby would be considered, to me, the first blend of two different species who are grossly misrepresented that came together to show how you shouldn't judge by stereotypes. :)

In the founding of the Starpony Kingdom, the question of how the church should relate to the state was already on the minds of the Founding Mothers and Fathers. Skysparkle and Stellaluna’s parents, obviously, wanted their daughters to rule according to the Christian sense of friendship.
To this end, the Founding Parents did not believe in forced worship. They did not believe in enforcing the Christian lifestyle beyond what was clearly important in protecting their fellow people. The Royal Church might be thought of as an established church, but it’s really the rulers’ own private outreach.
Now that I’ve thought about it, I may have most public schools conduct a “moment of friendship” at the start of class. Most parents don’t consider it the job of public school to teach religion — though the subject of theology may be a required part of cultural studies. Comparing different religions is not considered the same thing as teaching religion.
My goal is to depict a group of Christians who are endearing enough to warm the hearts of non-religious people who also seek friendship. I try not to mention religion more explicitly than necessary for the friendship lesson.
Of the Student Six, my favorite seems to be Sandbar. He feels like the unofficial leader, though Yona and Gallus each had an episode where they showed the strongest leadership. I wish his character had been explored in more depth, but his love for his foreign classmates is all we really need to know.
As far as I know, Sandbar has no special powers — other than his connection to the Tree of Harmony. He leads purely by the power of his friendship. He is a crucial role model for the boys.
I would love to see Sandbar and Sea Swirl do sea-related things together, alongside Silverstream and Terramar. (As you may know, Sea Swirl is that unicorn in the background with the twin dolphins for a cutie mark.)
I never really imagined shipping Spike with anyone other than Rarity. I ship Ember with Thorax, and Smolder feels more like a big sister. Now it seems Spike has gotten over his puppy love for Rarity. Maybe he and Gabby are much more compatible. Years later, of course, Spike becomes a big dragon, and that could make the intimacy of marriage awkward. Unless there’s a size-changing spell that can fix that. (It would be virtually impossible for Ember to be too big for Thorax, since he would always be able to fit.)
I hope you got a good visual idea of what Ember and Thorax look like, along with Gabby. The reformed changelings look so candy coated that some fans may find them saccharine. But that’s how I love it — it’s the colors of love.

It has certainly been quite an adventure in which MLP provided me with opportunities that my limitations had been holding me back from. It is very rare, as someone who is now totally blind, to go someplace and feel 'welcome' let alone seen for their talents instead of their disability.
Hopefully, with time, another great group will come together to empower those of us who are 'different'. We may have limitations but most can be pushed past if given the right tools and support to do so. :)

Oh yeah! This is a good lil summary of each year, and what was going on with both you, and pony too! 2019 really wrapped up a lot of things going on. Endings can be tough! But there are sometimes a lot of other positives that go on for us to appreciate, despite all the major hardships around it. I was always super happy you were able to enjoy pony stuff on your phone and listen to episodes, it's great that technology has gotten a lot easier, I just hope it doesn't backpedal on that too much!
If I have my way, the back-peddling will be waddled and swam through by my efforts in advocacy, technology, and full-on quackery. :)
Thanks for taking the time to read this. I know I write a ton and it makes it super hard for anyone to really enjoy the full extent of my work. I need to write more with my brain and less with my heart. *kushi-kushi*

Aww hehe it's alright to write a lot! I'm sure some smaller ones might help folks out if they don't have time or attention, but I think quality is important and so is gettin' out all you need. :3
No problem. I'm 'trying' to not be so wordy in my stories and journals. WIP *Shrugs*
Spiky wiky looks soo adorable.
I may have to read the story at some point

Thank you for giving this picture and its story a look. It's so hard to believe that it has been over four years since the last BronyCon.

The story is a bit wordy, which is one of my quirks as an writer. The long-to-short is that MLP: FiM got me through a lot of really difficult times in my life. When I learned about how much the show was helping others with disabilities, like myself, I started a wonderful project that lasted about seven years where I, along with so many others, showed howed how MLP / The Creative Arts is a perfect medium to use to spread and encouragement 'acceptance', 'understanding', 'empowerment', and 'community' for all. :)
