One time my friend Kristen bought one of those crappy cartoon DVDs from Walgreens that had a weird version of The Little Mermaid. The cover art was ripped straight from the Disney movie (they recolored Ariel's hair to be blonde) but the actual cartoon was anime. It was horrible and confusing, especially the outfits. All the other mermaids had seashells and starfish and shit covering their boobs, but the main mermaid just had blank boobs with no nipples. Then in the end she killed herself. ???

In the original Hans Christian Anderson tale she does kill herself, in a way. When the Prince marries another woman (and no, not the Sea Witch in disguise), the Sea Witch tells her to kill him and his lover or she'll turn into sea foam. So when she comes upon the lovers in their wedding bed, they look so happy that she cannot do it. She then leaves her comb on the side table and jumps back into the ocean, turning into the foam. I believe the Prince also gets up and sees her jump over and transform, but I don't remember exactly ;)
