Eyes firm.
Frank stood there in the jungle ahead of the rest of his men.
Staring into the distance. Beyond the trees.
Into a patch of green and black not unlike his fatigues.
He swore that he had seen it. A faint glimmer.
No more than a second of a speck. Coupled with a feeling.
That eerie, eerie sense. Of something staring back.
Frank stood on edge. As did every fiber of his hair.
He did not dare break eye contact with the unseen.
Not while his men rested. Vulnerable. Unaware.
Frank stared long into that abyss.
Until the trees faded. The patch grew darker.
His jaws clenched. And his eyes squinted.
Fixated, it dawned on him.
He wasn't breathing.
A wind shear broke through.
The forest and his trance.
And with it, he breathed. And blinked.
His vision returned.
But the glimmer was gone.
