When they're compact, their density just concentrates. But when they're flat? I dunno, I like to think that the sheer amount of surface contact with air particles, compared to the general size of their shape, tends to make them more fluttery and light. It's very weird twisted logic, where mass and density only matter up to a point of transformation. Like once a thinness is met, kaboom, weight begins to vanish.
And thanks! I had alot of fun doing that speech balloon, the idea of it is what dictated alot of this picture!

I also feel like compressing someone really small, like the size of a marble for example, makes them lighter. Perhaps there is a maximum amount of mass that can be compressed and anything excess is lost, so you get a sort of critical point after which compression starts to make things lighter again (and, if we wanna apply it into the fiction, is probably the thing mages need to practice overcoming)
Or it's just toon logic and I'm overthinking it :V
