His parents were scientists working on their planet's space program. Unfortunately, the program was cut short when the government was taken over by an oppressive regime. So they decided to sneak back into the base and steal the one spaceship they'd successfully built, and flee the planet in it. Fortunately, the space program had been canceled before a second spaceship could be built, so they weren't followed.

They made their way to Earth, where they landed somewhere in the American midwest. They managed to assimilate with human culture, became naturalized American citizens, and then Sefo was born.

So although he's a member of an alien race, Sefo technically is not an "alien". He's a second-generation Extraterrestrial-American.
