SOoo you know how I haven't done like anything for the past few weeks? Well there were two reasons... the first one being this! I have NEVER worked so hard on a drawing for so long before... many MANY hours went into this!
Why you might ask? Well, this is my entry into the LDS International Youth Competition!! I of course procrastinated until the very last day (last Friday) hence it taking up all my time.. and not being able to draw other stuff XD But now it's done, and I'm sooo happy!!
I had to fill out a form to enter this into the contest, so I think I'll just copy and paste what I wrote there:
How does your work of art address the theme from D&C 115:4-6 "Arise and shine forth, that thy light may be a standard for the nations"?
My goal in the piece was to draw the viewer's eye to the light source-the lion, which stands on a cliff above the world. As the lion stands above, shining forth, the lamb follows in his steps.
What is your work of art about?
The piece reflects the choices that we as youth can make- to follow Jesus, and arise above the world. The lamb represents the youth of the church, and the lion of course symbolizes Jesus. Even though He is a high and mighty God (just like the lion is the king of the jungle) He still has time to stop and teach a common lamb about his light.
How does your style or technique help express your idea?
I have a deep love for drawing animals, and I wanted to use it here. Using symbolisms I was able to use my style of drawing animals to portray what I feel. I love the feel of pastels, and how they can be both soft yet bold when I need them too--and I think I took full advantage of those qualities in this piece!
What symbols did you use?
Of course we have the lion and the lamb. However they don't represent the Millenium, like in many other works, in fact they represent Jesus and the youth of the church. His light, or the light of the gospel, shines above, and he can teach us how to use it. With his help we can rise above the world, as is portrayed with the cliff above the dark and stormy city below. Jesus brings life; and the green grass grows only around him in the drawing.
It's done with Pastels on Suede Mat Board
Hope you enjoy it! And wish me luck in the competition :D
