[Opening Subject Universe Information 01 - The Kingdom of Roses]
A world ruled by kings and queens.
Each kingdom is named after different types of flowers. However the kingdoms with the most power are named after roses.
Mei belongs to the kingdom of the blue rose. He is the fourth and final son of the royal family. Because of this he is unexpected to ever see the crown and thus isn’t given as much care and attention as his older brothers.
He never minded this however as he had more leeway when it came to wandering the streets of the common folk. So long as he dressed down during these visits and kept his status a secret he could do as he wished.
Ruka lives within the kingdom of the blue rose. Taken in by an orphanage, he was abandoned by his parents as a young kit due to being intersex.
He is often bullied by the other boys within the orphanage since he looks ‘different’ and is physically weaker than them. Because of this he prefers to be alone.
During one of the young prince’s times outside he comes across Ruka in the market buying food to take back to the orphanage. Ruka, mistaking Mei for a kit sent to help him carry the groceries, fills Mei’s hands with what he bought and drags the snow leopard back with him to the orphanage.
When they get back Ruka realizes his mistake and would apologize profusely.
After that Mei and Ruka would come to notice each other more and more every time they went out. Each time they found one another they would gradually get closer.
What started as a simple greeting as they passed by turned into stopping to chat, forgetting what they had even gone into town to do, which then turned into actively seeking each other out around town.
On one occasion when Mei goes to visit Ruka he stumbles across the cat being bullied. He intervenes and helps the other boy back to their feet, awkwardly asking about the remarks the bullies made about Ruka as he did.
Ruka would talk about what he’s been going through all throughout his time at the orphanage. Mei, not knowing how else to help, offers to teach Ruka self defense and how to wield a sword (or in their cases, a very large stick). These were skills he was originally taught back at the palace, but when asked how he knows these tricks it is quickly brushed over.
Mei teaches Ruka what he knows, and he never sees Ruka struggling with his bullies again.
The eldest son of the kingdom of the blue rose, Ryuusei, was one of few people who still paid attention to Mei. Every now and then he would assist him getting into town since he knew the young prince preferred that over royal events.
On one such occasion when Mei wished to go out and see Ruka, Ryuu noticed this and excused Mei from an upcoming banquet. This banquet however was what changed the fates of all those that stood atop the kingdom.
Poison laced the food and left many dead. The eldest son Ryuu survived but was left too sickly to rule, and the other two brothers who attended sadly met a tragic end. Leaving Mei the sole heir to the throne.
All attention turned to Mei, so leaving the palace to wander the streets became all but impossible for the prince. Meaning Mei and Ruka were unable to meet.
During their time apart Mei was nurtured into a fine and modest king. Changing from boisterous and easy going to something more regal and calm. Holding himself elegantly while never looking down on others.
While Ruka found himself becoming self-sufficient at an earlier age than most kits. Because of his knowledge of the sword and ability to reprimand troubledoers despite his size, he was often hired as a personal guard.
Ruka also became well known among the people because he was such an oddity. He was both thought highly of in terms of his skills, but also scorned by those who were jealous and by others for who he was physically. He’s often called “The Devil’s Dog” behind closed doors.
Only after ten years has passed since the tragedy is Mei able to meet Ruka once again. But their first meeting after so long is accidental and over before the two can even greet one another.
They get another chance to meet again while Ruka is acting as a hired guard. The tiger he is hired by visits and stays at the palace of the blue rose. Here Mei is able to pull Ruka aside at night and the two finally catch up.
Not long after Ruka finishes all his work he is hired by the royal palace to become one of Mei’s guards.
While in the presence of Ruka, Mei acts a little more like his old self. He’s a little more casual, a little more boyish, a little more free. Ruka however continues to act like the guard he is. He is very courteous toward Mei, speaking in minimal short replies when spoken to. Only breaking formalities when Mei teases him, making Ruka forget his position amidst his fluster.
Late at night Mei would sometimes stroll through a nearby forest along with Ruka.
During these scarce few occasions Mei would truly act how he wishes around Ruka, reminiscing on the past. And Ruka would join him, though a little more hesitantly, finding it difficult to shake the formalities.
And during these nights together is when their relationship that only sparked faintly when they were younger really starts to take root.
