the diversity of possibility
Posted 4 years agothe diversity of possibility is something we have to keep re-inventing every 20 or 30 years.
if we were really smart, we would never let it die.
i'm taking a kind of not quite literal shortcut there i'm not sure everyone will understand.
cultural perception is what i'm talking about, because except for the physical universe,
which by its very nature is already limitlessly diverse, the world of cultural perception
is the one most humans seem to see themselves as living in.
why this is so, has never been entirely clear to me.

the point and purpose of furry
Posted 4 years agoas i choose to see it, is that neither species human, nor its planet earth, are the point nor purpose of the rest of the universe.
that everything in it exists entirely for their own reasons, and it is only a fortuitous role of the dice, that species human exists at all.
that other forms, can and likely will eventually evolve sapience, (sentience anything bigger then a flea already has),
and that on other worlds the evolving of sapience has more likely then not, been bestowed on completely unlike outer forms.
(and is sapience even a thing, beyond a sufficient level of sentience to take an interest in creative expression?)
the solstice having well and thoroughly past, it has occurred to me, however reluctantly, that my previous journal had past its "pull date".
the year 2020, one i don't think i ever in my life fully expected i would live to see, is now, and i can only hope for the better, well under way.
an exciting thought for one lacking any great enthusiasm for excitement.
wonders continue to percipitate, while roots of certainty continue to decay.
a.i. in a sense, the same practical sense in which functional robotics owe nothing to the human form,
already well and thoroughly exists, if you think about it. the communication lag to distant worlds,
requires a high degree of autonomy of their robotic explorers, of which there are now a bunch of them out there.

Posted 4 years agowithout limiting our thoughts to what others want us to think we know,
we are surrounded by more wonders then we can imagine.
we walk through a universe that may sometimes bite,
but not one that wishes us harm.
one to which we can add beauty and pleasure or one
that some seem to wish to rob others of.

Posted 4 years agowe only look like cats, or chipmunks or dragons or whatever,
the greater difference from species human,
is our acceptance of the realization,
that no single species, can ever be the center of anything.
the great law, is not one hierarchy,
it is all things together, each with their own voice.

the two together to create a dry place just big enough for things you need to keep dry.

heaven
Posted 4 years agois not where you must eternally endure the company of a creator of universes,
(however fine and wonderful they might be)
but where no one's permission is required, to create one of your own,
and no one is going to come along and attempt to destroy it.
(nor is it a zero sum that requires anyone else's loss of anything to do so)

Posted 4 years agoof fieldbahn proportions in a fantasy environment,
and of course populated by people who look more like other species,
then anything human.
possibly a world that never made the mistake of hating logic and imagination,
or one that has learned the lesson not to the hard way of ecopocalyps,
and recovering from it.
mostly without hostility, as the impracticality of that having been learned the hard way too,
or alternately a road people having had better sense then to go down.
both worlds are possible, however 'alien' they might seem.
one our world might become, one that simply avoided making our mistakes.
what is this 'fantasy environment'?
simply one that is both truly green, in which everyone is allowed to build in their own strange ways,
the stranger the better, without the land itself, having to be owned, nor anything having to be 'monetized'
on larger then a local option.
one with a tiny fraction of today's earth's population levels.
too few for power grids or massive methods and levels of resource extraction.
no automobiles or large paved roads. just tiny villages and tinier trains connecting them.
steam is not unwelcome, but is entirely beside the point.
ultra narrow gauge and minimal form factor proportions, are the point,
and of course harmony with the diversity and strangeness,
unlimited by one person's or even one species, capacity for imagination

my favorite kinds of stories
Posted 5 years agoare ones in which the protagonist(s) invent a work around,
instead of beating their heads against each other.
that's what got me into “literary” (i.e. written, i.e. real) science fiction
(fiction ABOUT science, any science is ok, not just hard sciences either)
its the meaty details of how work-arrounds are found/invented and implemented,
that brings the satisfaction in reading about it,
very much like solving a mystery.
and it was by that road, that path, that I arrived at furry,
who I see as 'the meek' inheriting a post eco-pocalyptic earth.

Posted 5 years agoi mean without taking distractions along with you, of course,
you will discover a universe, that doesn't begin and end,
with people telling each other what to pretend.
there are people who wold like for this reason
for wilderness, even the rest of the universe beyond earth,
to not exist at all,
ignorant of or indifferent to, the simply reality,
they they would not themselves exist without it.
people can and do, convince themselves and each other,
of almost anything,
including that what they convince each other of,
being all that could possibly exist.
religion, economics and politics are all names for doing this.
and yet we can also make things that are real,
houses and trains,
in their reality, both acknowledge that something greater,
no only then themselves, but then what people tell each other,
also exists.

best theme for a con of any con of any kind i've ever been to.
(even if i didn't start paying attention to it soon enough to contribute anything)
highlight though was shunaka's cg panel,
and cat meeting, fox and peppers.
(metal bands aren't really my thing, but lots of happy energy)
i spent almost exactly what i planed to,
(120bux tops)
got almost exactly what i planed to with it.
(new tail, ironclaw hostbook, restock on caffeine soap)
plus a couple of extra items i didn't really need,
(a small art print from someone i've watched since forever,
and a signed cd from someone i'd never heard of for five bux)
but were inexpensive enough.
i don't get what is the attraction of jonney rockets that people are willing to pay what they charge for what they serve.
(casinos used to have good food cheap. now they have expensive food mediocre, and concessions)

Posted 5 years agobut i didn't get a room at the hotel this year.
i'm sleeping 'home' and riding bus every day.
which is fine for friday, which it will be in an hour and a bit,
ok for saturday, and not so good for sunday.
cat keeps odd hours. came home after opening cerimonies exausted.
slept 4 hours. if i had a car i'd be back there,
but tomarrow morning whenever the cat wakes me up to go outside will be soon enough.

i suppose its (BLFC) time to change this
Posted 5 years agoblfc is coming up in less then a couple of weeks.
i'll be there, as i live close enough to get there by a very long walk.
the local transit bus is more practical and my prefered mode.
otherwise i'd leave up my immediately previous journal
for ever
because its the core of who i am that doesn't change.
maybe, when i get back from con, i'll even put the exact same back up again.
i won't have a room this year. i wasn't even sure when i paid, that i'd even be able to afford,
or had enough reason to want to. so i knowingly didn't reserve a room when i had that chance.
so i won't be wearing anything other then mundane human to ride the bus.
i won't be spending a fortune in the dealers room, but i will be going there and looking around,
because i love seeing stuff, all the new and wonderful stuff people make every year.
there are one or two things i might want if i see them, but that's all.
i will of course be looking for, and probably looking at and nearsightedly not seeing,
everyone from here and anywhere else i might otherwise 'know'
and seeing and meeting three times as many i don't or haven't.
imagining a world in which we are all anthros, even if i can only imagine being,
without looking like, inside my own head.
the in con cattering has been the best deal on food, though as per every year,
i'll go one meal in the big buffette in the main food section.
and every panel that looks remotely interesting where i can just sit and watch and listen.

my 'art' why
Posted 5 years agoIf its about imagination, it interests me. If its about money, it does not.
Thus the art as business poses, to my mind, an inherent conflict.
I have another problem too, that many artists, even those who ARE good with business,
and at peace with the idea of it, also share and that is anxiety.
I'm one of those people who can figure out how to do most of what interests me,
as long as,
there is no pressure of any kind to do so.
I'd love to earn serious money, but there's no way that's going to happen.
As soon as money is involved, I get paranoid of doing anything.
Of disappointing people even when it isn't, and especially of being responsible for anyone else's,
which is why i've never worked as a cashier either.
I have no doubt I could sit down at anyone's work station,
and after a brief familiarization with their set up,
(unless it involves a truly exotic user interface),
and start creating.
But not, if they were expecting anything from me,
let alone anything particular.
I'd just freeze up, my mind would, that's just how it is.
Instead I “play”. That is, illustrate things in my mind I would like to build,
usually, or sometimes just stray things that occur to me.
And my mind is full of ideas, that I can't build in the real world,
without indenturing myself in some way,
which again, for the most part, incapacitates my 'creative juices'.
So basically, what has come to be called 'personal art',
is pretty much the only thing I can do,
so I build these things in the computer.
Photo-realism isn't my 'holy grail'.
I LIKE the 'clean' look of often relatively low 'poly count',
as well as loving the shortening of render time it enables,
though 'low poly count' isn't my 'holy grail' either,
just its reduction in render time.

the less we look like humans
Posted 5 years agoThe less furrys look like humans, while at the same time, the more we act like them,
the more likely there are to be worlds, circling other suns, populated by people like us.
Now I know, that many furrys just want to party, like they're some kind of cartoon characters.
That's ok too, as long as they can do so without hurting each other.
That's just not the part that interests me. Imagination is.

that beyond the box of social interaction,
there is a vast universe,
in which all our squabbles and anger,
all our glories and accomplishments,
are really very small after all.
our world is still a big place for one person in it,
but i find a universal perspective,
that does not depend upon our having to be the center of it,
a happier and more peaceful, even more gratifying,
way to be.
i don't if i can describe what i mean very well,
so instead i make pictures,
that attempt to impart some sense of it.
its about walking though a landscape,
in which nothing has to be owned,
in order to exist and be enjoyed.

my kind of world
Posted 5 years agodoesn't need swords or guns,
but narrow gauge railways
and a population small enough,
for people to build any kind of house they want to,
and not cause problems or offend anyone by doing so,
and not have to indenture themselves to anything either.
machines do most of the hard or repititious work,
but sometimes some people choose to as a form of meditation,
or to keep in some kind of mental of physical shape.
not that anyone wants to do nothing either,
if such a thing were even possible,
but to dream their own creative dreams
and make things based upon
each their own ways of doing so.
they love gadgets they can make things with,
but care nothing about trying to impress anyone by doing so.
more interested in what they and each other can make or do,
then in what they can aquire.
a reputation for generousity or creating beauty,
takes the place of money as the engine of their economy.
this is a little like potlatching, except it doesn't involve giving away your house,
or tools with which to make more things,
unless of course, making houses and giving them away is something you like to do.
but you still need to keep your tools, to make them with.
other then that, no one takes or hords what someone else is using or might be able to.
when i say no one, of course i mean this is the culture,
likewise, no one just walks into where it is obvious someone else is living,
even if its just a camp site,
but no place else is off limits to explore, even if its dangerous,
and if it is, its up to people to exercize their own caution and judgement.
its also not accepted to impose risk on someone else,
or require them to take them.
as for environment, people understand how dependent on it they are,
because the ecopocalypse is part of their history,
and their culture never lets them forget how and why it happened.

unseen things owe nothing to what someone tells someone else to pretend,

infrastructure can be innocent to, when it is mindful of the nature and environment that surrounds it.
you are only free, when you are not robbed of dreaming and building these innocent things.
