30th turn around the Sun (a rather cursed Birthday)
Today marks me entering my third decade in life, not too sure how to feel about that.
Why do I call it “cursed” though? Well, the day itself has been fine but absolutely everything leading up to it was a total disaster.
I was going to spend it at Furcation after I was made aware of it. I had other plans but the con theme being Star Trek (and Sci-Fi in general) won me other so decided that’s where I’ll go for my birthday. Unfortunately, I was a complete sucker for letting myself be scammed regarding accommodation and I only found out when I acted on a suspicion for something partially related, but it was already a few days away, much too late for the convention to help me out with a room, Best they could do by then was Blacklist the felon. The venue also had a policy of accommodation being mandatory so no accommodation, no attendance!
It wasn’t a lot of money that got swindled, only £56 but it wasn’t money I felt robbed of. This was a Star Trek themed convention and there are none of those in the UK to my knowledge, especially a Star Trek themed furry convention and because I got done dirty, my chance to attend one is completely ruined. Not only that, it’s statistically implausible for a convention to pick the same theme so there will never be anything like it in the entirety of Europe; never mind the UK ever again!
I had a once-in-a-lifetime experience stolen from me!
I was in an extremely foul mood for I kid you not four entire days! Even walking a good 3-4 miles to my local town and going to my favorite coffee shop in the aftermath of hearing the new was a temporary reprieve at best and my rage just wouldn’t subside. Losing opportunities like this are something a very raw and sensitive nerve after a few too many missed chances in life so this hurt me considerably, enough for me to just never bother with Furcation again from just how poisoned it is for me now.
My emotions could've been best summarized by this video.
It wasn’t entirely un-salvageable though, I had plans to see my grandparents after Furcation for a few more days so not wanting things to go completely to waste, I ended up deciding just extending my stay there but even that was thwart with a ridiculous chain of complications. First was the issue of getting there. I still have yet to learn to drive so I’m still dependent on lifts and public transport. My mum offered to drive me down which I reluctantly accepted only for her car to give the ghost for good later that day which left me getting the train. That’s all fine though, I’ve taken trains to far south of the UK before so that was no issue but shortly after booking a ticket, I get an email telling me the train had been cancelled! Thank god I got it ensured and could just board the next Cross-country service but it terminated where my first change was which meant still having to buy another ticket.
On top of that, rebooking my stay at the local village inn was a chore as Booking.com would not allow me to amend the stay due to it being past the 14th, exactly the same day I learned I couldn’t attend so it was already too late anyway. My attempts to ring the property regarding this situation would not get through and I did not trust my Email being read on time. In the end, I decided I may as well pay the cancellation fee and get booked in directly.
But wait! There’s more!
After a four-hour train journey in an extremely crowded carriage and with no legroom due to the luggage rack being too small to fit my suitcase, I end up missing the station I needed to change at because of all things; I just had to pick the worst time possible to take a much needed wizz! Also, I missed that other train I needed to catch too because of this. Yay! More train Tickets!
Fortunately, I didn’t need to waste even more money as the information office told me I can just explain the situation to the conductor on the train heading back but knowing my luck at this point, I was expecting to still be thrown off and spend the night in a nearby inn given how late it was at this point.
And you know what? That did not happen at all! The Conductor understood and I got to stay on until I came to where I was supposed to change and honestly my luck just kept improving from that point onwards as the extra ticket I needed to buy was an all day and there were still a service to my final stop. I still get a lift from the final station from my Grandad despite it being 21:30 by that point (my first train was at 14:30 if your wondering) and it turned out the Inn did indeed receive my email and made all the arrangements on their end so the only paperwork I needed to do was just for what I was going to have for breakfast in the morning.
So now, I’m staying in a nice & warm inn after a good meal at a restraint close to the seaside. I hope enjoyed this extremely stressful adventure with a surprisingly happy ending! XD
