Jagged's favorite things in 2023
Annual list of all the things i enjoyed this year. (Not necessarily things that came out this year, and not in any particular order.)
GAMES:
- The Don't Escape trilogy
Excellent point & click action, with light survival mechanics. Simple, spooky, awesome.
- Hellnight + Despiria
The kinda games that really, REALLY make me wanna learn how to make games myself. Weird japanese horror RPGs from the late 90/early 00s are an aesthetic like no other.
- Garage Bad Dream Adventure
See above.
- WURM Journey to the center of the earth
So, i have been planning on catching up with the 8-bit to 16-bit era of gaming. NES is a little toooo old school for my taste in general, but there are a few games from back then that manage to surprise me. Wurm is one. This had some really cool ideas for its time. Absolutely loved it. Except for the starfish section. Fuck the starfish section. I went out of my way to cheat just for that one part of the game. This is what i mean by "NES is too old-school", game design had no standards whatsoever back then. Enemy patterns and hitboxes are just plain random. Ignoring that, the boss battles are the highlight by far. Puzzles mixed with shooting sections, very inventive! More of that, please.
Also, check out my girl's strut lol: https://youtu.be/JiO0rghWNjs?si=-sm.....n6j&t=1957
- Ufouria
Same as above! Also a NES game that's still very playable, if you use save states. (╬ಠิ益ಠิ)
- Castlevania 64 Legacy of Darkness
I had an obsession with this one. As a Castlevania game it sucks. But taken on its own... This is one of those truly unique games. The atmosphere in the beginning is top notch, exploring the mansion has SUCH vibes. The rest of the game kinda eats. The platforming is absolutely atrocious, and again, save states are an essential if you hope of making it to the end with your sanity intact. And locking charatcers/content behind playthroughs? Not ok.
- Lost in Play
Solid adventure game. Manages to be cute without dipping into insipid. That's an accomplishment all on its own. None of that pastel colored "cozy game" BS. This is an actual game.
- The Last Door
Something that's actually deserving to call itself "Lovecraftian".
- Kilcount
Probably the most obscure thing on this list? I detest RPGMaker games, but this was saved by its stellar Monty Python-esque writing.
- Freedom's Eye
A surreal Russian Horror Walk Sim. My second favorite genre.
- Beyond the Edge of Owlsgard
Now that one made me feel 8 years old again! A graphic adventure that could be plucked right from a Win98 PC. Beautiful art, great soundtrack, even the voice acting isn't half bad.
- Meg's Monster
Ah yes, the one entry that actually made me fucking cry. There's always one.
- The Last Faith
Haven't played much of it, but it seems a solid Metroidvania that reeeeeally desperately wants to be Bloodborne. But is actually very forgiving in difficulty. At least so far.
edit: Alright, after playing more, this is not that good a game. Many questionable design decisions, many bugs, and waaaaaay too long. This shoulda been a 10 hour game and it drags itself to about thrice that. I gave up after roughly a third into the game. Nice graphics, not much to offer besides that. Unless you really, REALLY desperately want to replay Bloodborne in 2D for some reason.
BOOKS:
- Clive Barker's Book of Blood
Didn't think i'd enjoy Clive Barker of all people, but the man knows how to write. Very excellent horror, with a very surreal touch.
MOVIES:
- Uh... the Mario Movie, i guess? Movies haven't been good to me in a long while. You know what, fuck the movies category. How about a web series category instead?
WEB SERIES:
- Analogue Horror!
Been watching the ever loving crap out of any and all analogue horror i could find. This is some spooky ass stuff. It does rely on its found footage VHS formula like a 90s kid with OCD, but it hasn't gotten old yet.
- Opal
An Adult Swim short made by that hipster guy who makes those cool Vine clips with the catchy music and the 90s aesthetic. You can watch it right here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-1pVLJl_snc
Pretty heavy stuff tho, don't watch if you're going through any kind of depressive state. I made that mistake...
ANIME/MANGA:
Been mostly catching up on lotsa 80s/90s classics. Nothing really new that i liked much. Still reading Made in Abyss and Land of the Lustrous.
- Berserk
- Ninja Scroll
- Bomberman Jetters (Not finished yet, still watching. I'm savoring this one, it's too good.)
- Blood Reign: Curse of the Yoma
- 3x3 Eyes
- Legend of the Overfiend (i know it's porn, shuddup >:U )
- Hell's Paradise (The one new manga on this list that i read.)
- Also watched the Dante and the Wolverine anime... not good, but much sex appeal. (○゚ε゚○)
And lastly, Sonic Prime! Probably the most guilty of pleasures on this entire list, but damn, it's way better than a Sonic show has any right to be. It's just mindless cartoony action fun. And even has Big the Cat!
