Protron History
In the beginning, Gemini divided into two natural forces; Astral (Active) and Umbral (Passive). Each of the two forces then divided into six elements. Astral became Fire, Air, Lightning, Light, Life and Order. Umbral became Earth, Water, Ice, Shadow, Death and Chaos.
This event has a lot of religious symbolism as it is often depicted as Gemini being a singular entity existing in a type of cosmic egg that wanted to purge itself of corruption. Creating a good and evil version of itself with the evil half represented by a six-headed black dragon. The tale ends with both of them killing each other in battle and their corpses forming a entity to repeat the cycle.
Each element manifested it's own pantheon of gods that embodied and reflected both the literal and fugitive aspects of their element.
The Twelve Pantheons, through their efforts of cooperation and competition, reshaped Gemini. They brought harmony and balance to the world.
Gemini itself is a geological anomaly as it exists simultaneously as both a plane and a sphere. Gemini is a perpetually generated world that extends indefinitely with innumerable amounts of continents to explore. When traveling high enough above the atmosphere space bends inwards and Gemini appears as an ocean covered planet with a singular continent in the center. Regardless of which direction Gemini is approached by, that continent is always in center view. Gemini is simply bigger on the inside.
The Fates prophesied the end times for the the gods and creation. They revealed that Gemini had a twin. These parallel words where going to merge together on the same timeline. They will overlap, cancel each other out and be erased from existence. The only way to escape complete annihilation is if one of the worlds is destroyed first. While they can foresee one of the worlds prevailing, they cannot tell which as they are mirror reflections of each other.
The Twelve' have been preparing for this ensuing conflict for eons. Stockpiling armaments and supplies. Amassing hosts of celestial and infernal legions. Taming and breeding fearsome monsters. Empowering dragon broods. Constructing powerful titans. Recruiting heroes to champion their cause.
The Twelve' created an afterlife that would transform every soul into a mighty warrior. Those deemed worthy would go to Celestia, where they train all day and feast all night, preparing for the start of the Convergence. Those deemed unworthy we're sent to Infernia where they were cleansed of their impurities until they were fit to enter Celestia. The Twelve' used Reapers to collect the souls of the dead. The Reapers brought the souls before the Arbiter who could instantly judge the deeds of each one and decide the best afterlife to send them to. Each of the pantheons controlled nine realms of the afterlife where they employed different methods to be able to convert every soul into a warrior.
Despite the vast forces they accumulated, the Twelve' still felt it was still insufficient. They assumed their counterparts did the same and they would be evenly matched. They wanted an advantage. They wanted an endless army.
The Twelve' wanted to create the ultimate race that encompassed all their aspects and fought on behalf of all the pantheons. To accomplish this they had to unite all the elements into one creation, something that had not been done since great separation. Perfection in both form and essence. For the form they forged together fire, lightning, earth, water, ice and air. For the essence they weaved together life, light, order, shadow, chaos and death. They combined the two to construct their chosen people. They called these people the protrons, meaning "the perfect instrument."
The Twelve' constructed secret installations around Gemini to monitor the development of the protrons.
The protrons proved to be as eternal as the Twelve' had hoped. When slain they would revive a short time later. Instead of being sent to the afterlife, their souls would linger in the veil a short time before being awaken in their renewed bodies.
The protrons showed signs of potentially limitless growth. They gained experience and learned to adapt to new challenges, honing their skills and developing new techniques to help them survive. Their curiosity leads them to constantly create new inventions and technology. Their desire to compete with each other drives them to become ever stronger. They could eventually surpass even their own creators.
For the next ten thousand years the protrons had their resolve tested by every trial and tribulation imaginable. They were plagued by a constant series of disasters and wars. However, adversity only made them stronger as a people while periods of peace caused them to stagnant. Despite the advantages of being immortal, they were still contested by the moral races for supremacy.
Every millenia ends the magic season for the protrons. During the Summer, or Astral Era, protrons can only use active magic. During the Winter, or Umbral Era, protons can only use passive magic. They simply forget how to use the previous magic and have to relearn the new magic ever thousand years. Those who can use magic also rotate, as if half the population has their magical abilities deactivated while the other half as them reactivated. They celebrate this change with a millennial festival.
The seasonal change also brings with it a cataclysm that destroys most of protron civilization. The change in magic causes the dragons to awaken from their millennial slumber to ravage the land and the elementals become agitated as their polarity shifts. It also weakens the barrier between worlds allowing demons to the invade. All this happens during the short period of time when protrons cannot use magic and they are at their most vulnerable. This inevitably leads to all their cities getting destroyed and the mortal races attempting to seize their territory in the aftermath. It takes the protrons a few centuries to rebuild and secure their nations. The protrons become gradually more proficient and it takes less time to recover each cycle.
Protrons are most technologically advanced race on Gemini. All their architecture is futuristic and covered in neon lights and crystals. Most of their technology is based on crystals. They are the inventors of teleporters, replicators, energy shields, phase disruptors, mechs and space travel. They are also the inventors of some notorious devices such as the gem reactors that drains Gemini of itself life essence which is slowly killing the planet. Such things have lead to the formation of eco-terrorist group that oppose them.
The orthodox religion worships 144,000 major gods, each of the twelve pantheons has 12,000 major gods and myriads of other minor gods and spirits. Each protron selects one of the major gods to be their patron and prays to them for their blessings and boons. The Twelve' tends to keep the truth hidden from the protrons for various reasons. There is a growing doomsday cult that believes that existence is torment and the only relief is oblivion, a psychological problem resulting from immortality. There is also a small sect that believes there is a sovereign that created the Twelve' pantheons.
When the Convergence started and the Twelve' met their adversaries on the battlefield they were shocked to discover that the opposing Twelve' had created their own protrons, identical to the ones they made. The protrons clashed like tidal waves slamming into each other. Proved to be as formidable as anticipated. A single protron was capable of killing off several elite champions at the same time while their most powerful monsters were slain by a few dozen protrons. It became suicidal to confront the protrons directly and many of the moral forces were ordered to withdraw and take up defensive positions at key locations and wait for moments of opportunities to strike. A decisive victory for either side seemed impossible.
The original plan was to have a wide variety of specialized forces to cover any weakness and counter any attack. The protrons were suppose to be rank-and-file soldiers meant to fill any gaps in the defense and act as cannon fodder. They surpassed their expectations. Their versatile adaptability allowed them to quickly change tactics and overwhelm opponents much more powerful than themselves. The strategy of the war changed and most forces now give support to the protrons.
With the war in a deadlock, the eclipse seemed almost certain before either side could claim victory. Desperate for a peaceful resolution, the star goddess sacrificed herself to halt the movement of the stars and freeze the eclipse in time until a victor could emerge. Her sacrifice proved a second benefit as well, showering Gemini with star dust that could be collected to empower protrons. The protrons pleaded to honor her sacrifice by collecting all the star dust and resurrecting the fallen star goddess.
The Convergence is causes all kinds of spacial anomalies and magical surges. The fabric of reality is being torn apart and portals to other dimensions are opening across Gemini. All manner of monsters and demons are invading unchecked. Cosmic horrors have arrived to feed on the entropic energies produced by the calamity. Off-world scavengers are plundering resources. Warlords are conquering territories. Mad dragons are ravaging the land. Dark gods are weakening their prisons.
While the majority of protrons are fighting on the front lines, a small portion have become adventures to help deal with the other problems facing Gemini. Helping those in need, exploring ancient ruins, slaying monsters, discovering treasure, saving the world. Adventures help in the war effort by solving problems before they become distractions for the military.
