My final project for photography was a documentary style collection of photos featuring Furry Connection North 2013
As a side project, I wrote information for each photo. They can be viewed with or without the text. Special thanks to all of those who I interviewed and caught in my camera's view. For this image, Thanks nekochen !
Also, yes I know that she does, in fact, have a fursuit now. XD
When one thinks of furries, the most common response is that of a fursuit. However, the vast majority of furries do not own a fursuit and have never worn one. These costumes are expensive. Fursuits are costumed designed for each individual buyer. The style of suit can range from extremely toony to extremely realistic depending on the artist commissioned to make the suit. The costs of a suit also come in a wide range. A fursuit head alone can cost around $600.00-$900.00 and a full suit ranges between $1,000.00 and above. It is because of this cost that most furries do not own suits. Others simply have no interest to wear one. At Furry Connection North in 2013, a registered 1300 attendees were counted, while only 241 of them were fursuiters.
Casey Phillips, also known in the furry fandom as Nekochen, followed her friend to a furry convention out of boredom and curiosity. She soon fell in love. Her fursona, or personal furry character, is a female big horned sheep. Instead of wearing a fursuit, she oftentimes can be seen wandering a convention wearing calf high hoof boots and ram horns. On fancier days, she paints her face, arms, and neck with body paint to mimic her character Nekochen. Casey’s artwork features a realistic quality and includes a fantastic amount of detail. She stated in an interview that “In all honesty, I don’t know what I would do without the furry fandom. It has shown me I can be myself and people accept me for who I am and it’s helped me accept myself and actually like being who I am. Plus, furries are some of the nicest people I’ve ever met.”
