Oh, Feline of the Sink - What is Thy Wisdom?
Author / Owner Note: It seems that this photo has blown-up due to Reddit reposts, Facebook, and the internet in general. How strange it is that this benign photo of me cold-washing my costume lived in near-complete silence for 8+ years before going ballistic, but that's the internet for you, I guess. Thanks for sharing it and having fun with it! It's such a great feeling to know that thousands of random strangers got a chuckle out of such a silly little image. Always happy to provide you with the dopamine. =3
So if you're going to repost this image from the source, I only ask a few things of you, and they're quite simple:
First up, it'd be awesome if you could credit and or/link the image-repost back to me here. I absolutely adore shitposts and memes, so I'm overjoyed about this silly image becoming part of one. I only ask that people please try to be respectful when using it for hilarity purposes - Kat Aclysm is a G-Rated costume and nothing more (it has been used for charity work with small children as I have my WWC + PBC documentation in order). I am also AFAB, but NB, so I prefer 'they/them' pronouns if you're gonna talk about me, the owner of the costume. That's it. Yay!
Kat isn't a tiger, either. Skogkatt, or Norwegian Forest Cat would be more accurate. Basically, a big, chunky domestic cat with heaps of fluff.
So how/why do you wash it?
Contrary to popular belief, people who own fursuits actually do, and should wash them (some people don't as often as they should, but I'm on the same team as you with that one - WASH THE FUCKING FURSUIT, YOU DISGUSTING HOBO). As the larger majority of them are made out of faux fur (which is manufactured using modacrylic plastic), and polyurethane foam (also a type of plastic), they can be handwashed, or machine-washed in cold water without ill effect. Always check with the builder of the fursuit for specific washing instructions that apply directly to your costume if it has individual care needs, but otherwise, cold water and soap without phosphorous and bleach works best.
I generally recommend plain/simple shower-gel (without exfoliation granules) to peeps when giving advice on this subject, because if it's safe for your skin, it's safe for your fursuit. A simple handwash, and a 30+ minute soak in your laundry sink with cold water and bath gel will do the trick. When you've done that, squish all the water out, give it another plain cold-water rinse to get out the residual soap, then spin dry it, and hang it up to dry. Done!
Your costume should last for many, many years with proper washing and maintenance. Kat Aclysm is 10 years old in December!
Rawr!
Thought I'd have a bit of fun with washing my fursuit. It's been about a year, and I usually do this anyway when Spring comes (the warmer weather means it won't be drying off for weeks and risking mildew development). The thing got really ganky by the end of FurJam, so... into the tub it goes!
Washed the costume-part with mint-scented body bath gel. It seems to be best for removing sweat and skin/hair oil deposits. Plus it has no harsh chemicals in it (like ammonium) so it comes out of this just fine. Just needs a few days to dry and a gentle brushing.
NOTE: This is a Jillcostumes Fursuit head. Which means it can be fully immersed in water with no ill-effect. Please check the cleaning instructions from your own builder before doing this!

Aaah i'm so glad i'm not the only one who uses Original Source stuff when washing suits! I use the same one! =D
It seems to be best for removing sweat and skin/hair oil deposits! And it has no harsh chemicals in it. AND it smells vaguely of mint afterwards. Mmmm <3
Aagh! I'll never be able to read Calvin & Hobbes comfortably again!
It's nice to see fursuits that can be washed like this. I also made my suit out of 100% plastic so it's okay to get it wet.

I would agree that you should ask your fursuit maker about washing like this and would not recommend this for most heads.

OH SHIT!
Can I wash my head like this? It's a foam head and I want to clean it but so afraid to mess it up.

You would have to contact your builder regarding cleaning instructions. A lot of fursuits use painted buckram in the eye panels (for seeing through), which is not waterproof.
Jill0r makes her fursuit heads washable, which is one of the main reasons I purchased my kitty from her!

I have mesh eyes. I'm gonna be replacing them soon but still I'm just worried it will take to too long to dry and get smelly. So I just keep spraying it with 50/50 rubbing alcohol/water
As long as it's aired out properly and in warm air, it should dry nicely. If you're in the Northern Hemisphere and approaching winter, I'd advise waiting until next summer to wash your critterhead.
Rubbing Alcohol/Water will kill the bacteria that create icky smells, but it won't remove the salt deposits from your sweat.

This made me jump, I thought you were in the suit for some reason haha!
Nothing else will do!
Plus you get to smell like catnip mint X3

I think that's really cool her head can be fully submerged and cleaned. I don't think there's very many fursuit makers where the head can be fully submerged without damage.
