I found this guy climbing across my neck.
After rescuing it from my cat, I went to release it outside. Of course, by now it had calmed down, and I decided this was an excellent photo opportunity. So here we go, a beautiful adult cockroach in all its glory, featuring my hand.
PLEASE DON'T COMMENT IF YOU'RE GONNA SAY IT'S GROSS OR YOU WANT TO KILL IT, THANKS.

Once I realized that there's no way they can actually harm you I immediately stopped being afraid of them. But also I absolutely do not tolerate them in the house. I usually just carry em far out into the yard and YEET them into the grass, then wash my hands.
It helps that I grew up catching lizards too lol

i mean i've always been a fan of catching lizards and locusts, but certain bugs, like cockroaches (and anything fast and prone to swarms, like ants) just trigger a primal urge to eliminate them as quickly as possible. i'm also a fan of rodents and snakes, which i know a lot of people seem to get that same violent response to that i get with roaches. i sort of have it for spiders, but i'm able to get over that one most of the time, especially with bigger spiders that are very clearly not black widows or brown recluses.
also the sensation of tiny quick bug feet on my skin triggers crush instincts real bad. i have to be super careful holding fragile things like lizards and mice cuz their feet can be a bit reminiscent of bug feet if i'm not focusing.

ye. i think the cockroach fear probably evolved for the same reason the fear of rodents, or clusters of holes did. cockroaches tend to swarm decaying food, stuff filled with disease. the roaches themselves are perfectly safe, but in our past they were enough of a sign of danger that we evolved to want to avoid them. feelings are annoying...
