I've kind of been doing quick/lame pinup-y sketches lately, so I figured I'd go for something a bit chunkier, imagery-wise. I've also noticed that the in-progress shots I post, I usually wind up posting at the same time as the completed image. That means any critique I get is kind of after the fact, at least in terms of fundamental, structural stuff already being set.
So, in an effort to address both of those issues, here's the basic rough sketch for a creation myth that never was. For my own sake, and for folks who may be interested in seeing my process, this will be a fun little experiment ^_^
So far, I've just been blocking in the figure -- so little of the rest of the scene is in place, there isn't much of a visual 'story' yet, per se.
Work has been pretty busy, so it may take me a while, but this has me interested, and I'd like to finish it up into something reasonably nice. I may well post further in-progress shots as events merit, and I'll be deleting or moving each step to scraps when the next/final goes up. As always, crit is welcome!

You change so much of what you do from initial scans, it's sometimes hard to comment! The only thing that's poking me so far is the sword; if it's meant to be a Katana, it's way too curved. It's almost a scimitar. I don't understand sword skills well enough to know, but his right hand being off the hilt looks a little odd. I DO like the fact that the sword has gone past the lotus, but his eyes remain firmly on it, and not the blade. That seems cool and right. Figure seems solid as well. I won't even guess at the colors! That spatter paint thing is very cool. Sorry, that's about all I have to offer at this point. Hope it's of some help.
Hehe, I know, it's so mean to the people who give crit <3 But it's helpful nonetheless! You're totally right on the sword -- I'd drawn it in as a katana with a kind of added motion-blur curve at the tip, but that got covered over by the super spray effect. Now that you mention it, though, it might be interesting to make it a scimitar, just as something a little different. I'll update the hilt accordingly ^_^
I think on a circular sweep of the sword, it would probably break out of the left hand's grip at the end, just because it's swinging past the wrist's range of possible motion around the other arm. Regardless of correctness, I like the sort of flow of it, so while I'll be tweaking that other hand, to be sure, I'll probably leave it open and trailing. Facts be damned, right? ^_^
And yeah, *I'M* not even going to guess at the colors, either, hehe. I know better by now <3 Thanks for the comments, though, and it always helps!

This is coming along beautifully.
as for crit, i notice things after standing back & looking the piece over several times.
Just one thing for now. His right leg looks as though it's twisting at an odd angle. Also, the upper portion of his right leg seems a bit truncated, considering how far the knee is from the pelvis. If you want, play around with the anatomy & perspective in regards to that (i'm thinking one affects the other & vice-versa).
Or not... awesome peice o' work regardless (:

I used the same Photoshop brush I always do, so the watercolory look of his hair and whatnot is basically just color and opacity making it look washier than usual. As far as the actual brush dynamics go, I'd say it closer simulates gouache than watercolors, but at the end of the day, it's all the same Photoshop digital paint, so those distinctions cease to hold much meaning ^_^
hehe i just started more seriously like 2 months ago ^^ but i really love it and what it can be done, sometimes im just shy to ask something how is done in a drawing because i fear the answer: How come you dont know!? or, is a super duper secret i wont share with you >=]
also its great to be learning new things over time, because if we are stuck, then we are doomed XD

Nobody starts out knowing, dude -- we all have to learn sometime ^_^ And art isn't a competition, so I don't really get the point of hiding information from other people. If other people do better art, I get to look at better art -- that seems like a pretty clear win for everybody ^_^
Not to be a sleaze bucket about it, but if you're curious about how I paint in Photoshop, I wrote a book about it that you can find here. If you're curious, you might check it out! If nothing else, it shows you how I work ^_^

No worries, dude -- I'm the same way, really.
The images in the book are all images I have up here:
at the market
*rawk
sunset
raindrops
texxy
milk bath
curtains!
huuuugs
white crusade
the hero
lucky red
work in process
None are what I'd call pornographic, but there's a decent bit of nude figure work, and definitely a bit of eroticism. I'd encourage you to take a peek at the images here and judge for yourself whether it's the sort of thing you'd be interested in or not ^_^ If they aren't too explicit for you, the book will explain various techniques and parts of my process in coming up with them.

I agree! Nudes like this one are no more titillating than anything you'd see in a museum -- I flag them 'general audience,' and figure that if there are any problems, the site's moderators will let me know. I'm not out to scandalize anybody or trying to be controversial, but it is silly that we encourage our kids to look at nudity in the form of Greek sculptures in museums, but flip out when people see a breast in a drawing on the internet. The naked body isn't necessarily erotic at all.
Heh, sorry for the rant! If you do check out the book, let me know what you think! I hope it proves informative ^_^

dont worry ^^ usually i only get books when they are tutorials or have important information that can be used , and also people need to gain money by their well done job ^^ (comic books or literature i prefer to download and read in the pc =P, and if i really liked the comic book i buy it, and since i mainly read classic literature its better =P) and i think its pretty cheap compared with other books
My favourite part of this piece is the fact that, despite his action-filled action...yeah...well, despite that, he's got this beautifully beatific contemplative look on his face. That's the sort of expression i love to see in a creator-god.
but then, I always comment on how wonderful your characters' facial expressions are.
