Digging through my hard drive recently, I discovered this commission preview sketch by simul from about a year ago. It was going to the basis of small format oil painting, but in their ever-persistent drive for perfectionism, the artists weren't quite happy with the direction it was taking, and asked me for permission to leave this version unfinished and start the commission anew.
We ended up switching to a much larger format and trading the portrait for a profile, and the finished piece became this, which exceeded all my expectations:

I love looking at these behind the scenes kind of sketch ideas. Just blows me away the kinds of things we never get to see because it still looks amazing.
I suppose a great artist is one that never stops trying to improve, but it is remarkable to look at what didn't work
