I clutch your paw tight staring into your weak eyes; a single tear falling from my cheek. “I love you.” The only words I could pull out of me without choking. I turn to the flowers sitting on the nightstand next to your bed wilting and turning an ugly brown. Death. Something that is always taken for granted like when an annoying mosquito lands on your arm and you swat at it watching the blood trickle and the insect dissipate into pieces in your paw. Or when you are watching your favorite show and a special news bulletin interrupts at your favorite scene to inform you of breaking news about a ten-car collision where three people lost their lives. Instead of feeling remorse you curse the station for interrupting your favorite show. The true pain of losing something to death is quite unimaginable when it happens to affect you personally. Sitting in the seat besides my true love as he takes his last breathes, is a pain I will never be able to forget. Reminiscing on times from the past allows me to temporarily smile realizing that he will always be with me in my memories and in my heart.
