Poor Bolt, you never had the chance to be a real dog.... NOW you have! ;) My realistic version of Bolt. I think he's cute that way. ^^
I really love the cute Disney version of Bolt, the only thing I found stupid - a 5 year old dog does not look like such a puppy! I totally understand Disney dogs have to be cute, but 5 years old... that's a little ridiculous.

Bolt is not a white german shepherd. He is a white american shepherd dog, or possibly a Berger Blanc Suisse.

Really? I thought I specifically remember reading he was a GSD.
Yeah, I did. From the back of the DVD and Netflix thinger.
"Featuring the voices of John Travolta and Miley Cyrus, this animated adventure (nominated for a Best Animated Feature Oscar and Golden Globe) centers on a dashing German shepherd named Bolt, a canine actor forced into making an action-filled cross-country trek when he's accidentally shipped from Hollywood to New York. Believing that he and his fictional character are one and the same, Bolt gets a glimpse of what it takes to be a hero in the real world."

Weird. the article I read on it said he was an American Sheppard, here's a snipit from the article.
The movie's American White Shepherd hero, Bolt, is a dog who stars in his own TV show. To all his co-stars, it's just fiction. To Bolt, it's reality. He really believe he's a superhero dog, and he really believes that the girl who stars with him has been abducted by the bad guys.
Probably because there's some debate in the AKC on weather or not the American Sheppard should be it's own breed, or lumped in with the GSD.

Yeah, sometimes the lines as to where you've changed a line of dogs to the extent that it's now a new breed are pretty blurred. American Sheppards are getting there though, for one, they're all solid white, where in the GSD, white is rare. And they're also slightly smaller than a GSD. But that's partly where the argument comes from, because there are white GSD's and the size difference isn't always large enough to put them outside the GSD standard.
Bolt is not "barely bigger" than a house cat. Mittens is about as big as Bolt's arm. It is, however, true that Bolt changes size in the movie.

Very nice, NOW DRAW HIM IN SOME PORN!!!!
*Ahem* Sorry about that, I didn't mean for that to come out.
Anyway, looks great! I agree with you, he was way too puppyish, but I guess the whole "little dog, big abilities" thing is what they were going for. He looks great as a realistic adult FOR PORN!
Er...anyway...yeah, good job!

*laughs - I drew Bolt PRon -
didn't look cubby *grins
I agree though - I didn't like how they stylized him -
he should been like a puppy in the film -
who grows up later - thy made him more like 5 in human
age - not 5 actual years for a dog (ie like 35)
- Fennec

I haven't seen Bolt yet (It's on my Netflix queue... just waiting for Marley & Me to come out before I have Bolt come), but I've wondered about that! Bolt, a white German shepherd, is just slightly bigger than the cat. I'm all for cute, but I like some realism, too.
I like your rendition, better. :)

Not as dumb as you think; he was obviously off breed standard (white fur), so it's possible they selected a dwarf German Sheperd:

For the purposes of the movie, having him be the first mini-shep wouldn't be out of the question; it could be explained in-show as a side effect of the power-granting process.

I could paint a lightning bolt on our new rescue dog and he'd be a realistic Bolt. XD Except for his blue eyes, I suppose.

I agree though, I watched this for the third time the other day and I noted that his proportions are functionally the same as an adult as they were as a puppy. The realism + cartoony thing they do in the new digital 'toons' messes me up sometimes.

But, I don't believe he's a GSD because the only sites I found that say that are all written by the users or reviewers who aren't able to provide a source direct from Disney. If you can link me to a site that proves it, I think I'll consider XP To me he always looked like some kind of shorthair terrier.
I completely agree with your reasoning behind this. before I watched it, I thought Bolt was always a puppy. Then I saw it and it mentioned "5 years later". O_o was the thought on my mind.
Yours was a much better version of Bolt (Even though I know I'm gonna catch crap for saying it)

I love this, he looks very sexy. Most awesome version of Bolt I've seen yet!
And yeah I thought he shoulda got less puppy looking, but you know sometimes animals always have a baby-ish look about them.
I LOVE big animals, but mine always seem to stay small even when they grow up. ;O
Keep up the great work. :D

Also,
balloonpup tells me that this pic has proportions for a German Sheppie, whereas Bolt is a white American Sheppie, which have subtly different proportions.

hmmm maybe bolt's growth was stunted in the movie, i've never seen it myself but i have seen pictures of him, that could have been why he was puppy looking, it does happen hehe good job on the drawing anyway its great, heh maybe you could work for disney and make everything cute xD
Just brilliant!
I have never seen Bolt, and i thought he was a puppy when watching the trailers, due to his size. But why would a puppy also be voiced by John Travolta?
Great picture Tani. I love those "none computer versions" of Bolt. The expression is "typical" you, and his paws are just fantastic.
Reminds me a tad of my friend´s white german shepherd.

bolt IS adorable, but I always thought he was wayyyyyyy too smalll. got a wimpy-ass bark, too ><
ANYWAY.
it's a nice breath of fresh air, getting a picture of him more realistic looking.
it drives me nuts to see people who draw themselves in their own style and bolt in the disney style ><
YOU HAVE BROKEN THE TRAIN!

I love this...;_; I saw this movie with a friend when it first came out and we both kept saying how much better it would've been in a beautiful traditional animation style (ie: Sorta like a Balto/Lion King style...yknow, back when animation was GOOD and all)
We were right. ;_;
Awesome work

Truthfully, I would have actually enjoyed this model more in the Disney film. It's more believable as what a studio would cast as a hero dog in a series. Particularly one who is having to protect someone.
I agree, as cute as bolt was, this would likely have attracted a larger audience.

You don't know what you are talking about.
If Bolt would look to big or tall, he would give the impression of being successful and accomplish any goal he wanted to achieve. Storywise, his physicality wouldn't lend itself to much pathos and doubt. So, they decided to make Bolt look slightly more adolescent. That’s why he’s short, now, for a white American shepherd. He looks like his task would be a little more challenging at his size.
Besides, it's obvious that you haven't payed much attention to the movie. Whereas Tani's version of Bolt is too feeble, with thin legs and a meager appearance. The real Bolt looks more muscular and soft-curved.
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikiped.....comparison.png
Yes, of course, my liking Tani's art MUST mean I didn't like the original movie. I can't like anyone else's vision without trampling on yours. Please Mr. Internet Opinion Person, forgive us our stupidity in the face of your incredible greatness. Back to real life with me. 9.9
It means I loved the movie, watched it quite happily several times, but that I also found Tani's character design charming and likable. No rule saying I can't adore both. These ARE just my opinions after all. I'm perfectly happy knowing plenty of people prefer the cuddly soft almost plushistyle version of Bolt.
I like cheddar cheese. But I like Baby Swiss even more. Does this mean now I do NOT like Cheddar? Of course not. I like Bolt. I think that Tani's vision of him is even more attractive, just as I think Swiss tastes better than Cheddar. Only children and idiots live in extremes.
It has nothing to do with "extremes". Its a simple logical conclusion. I don't doubt for a second that you love both version of Bolt. Frankly, it's irrelevant. The fact that you prefer an altered version of Bolt over the actual Bolt, "even more" implies that you think that original Bolt is not perfect the way he is.
And that's where we disagree.
And that's where we disagree.
If the notion of "perfect" is not an extreme, I don't know what is. To call you childish over your response in that extreme is not based on your opinion of the original design of Bolt, it was based on your claim that I could not have aid attention to the movie, and in fact, did not know what I was talking about. Its my opinion. Where my opinion is concerned, I am the only one who can say with a high degree of certainty that I know what I am talking about. For you to dismiss an opinion as ignorance and then immediately impose an opinion of your own would indicate you either lack the social skills to accept differing opinions, or that you are just another faceless troll wandering around contributing nothing but pointless and time wasting arguments. I stand by my assessment. I find Tani's image a more attractive depiction, even though I loved the movie. Incidentally, I find absolutely nothing wrong with Bolt not being perfect. None of us are.
And I respectfully disagree.
TaniDaniReal is a very talented artist. But in this picture, Bolt looks feeble, he has longer, thinner legs and a more meager appearance. His long, pointy muzzle, though surely more realistic than the actual Bolt's short and square-cut muzzle could not form the same amazing expressions and mimics Bolt had in the movie. I think think that Tani's Bolt is anywhere near as attractive.
Besides, Bolt from the movie had a stronger, more sturdy but yet more slender and "v-shaped" body. He also has a more curved outline with soft shapes. His big head is just distracting you, is all...

I asked one of my friends who is an expert on dogs and does dog shows why, despite being a 5 year old german shepard, Bolt is so small. She says the only explanation is that he is a mix breed with a smaller breed of dog
so that explains why he is so small
anyway, love the pic! :D
