Did this quick&dirty concept dump yesterday instead of sleep, then i slapped some info
on it and dubbed it a ref sheet. I'm doing a minicomic with the kid character (Kari) and
needed to perma-decide some things about Tetra for it (i like to leave everything
undecided and flexible as long as possible). I just needed to design one character
beside the kid and then 13 of them happened.
Here's some old and cringey pics of them when they had a super-boring, aimless design:

The human is Ryan, my main guy, and the info given largely corresponds to what he can
know about these people - he constantly travels, so he knows a lot about a lot of
places. While we are at it, his race is kilian - the most widespread race with the largest
population, who for some reason do not have their own country either. Also my self-
insert character White Raven is a long-eared (or island-) kellan. For comparison's sake.
That bottom right pic is here: http://fav.me/d952c1o
(typo: in "southern hemisphere" replace "hemisphere" with "polar region")
By favored spirit in there i mean: spirits are a specific class of things on Tetra and
SOMETIMES they interact with people, not even all of them do. But there are also spirits
who go nuts for people, such as Ryan's spirit, Phoenix, or the griffin on this:
http://fav.me/d8wqzd9 (he is called Griffin and is the busy-busy patron spirit of Kark, a
humongous empire on the southern hemisphere near the equator who can largely thank
their size, power wealth to him) and there is Marduk who almost doesn't give a fuck
about humans: http://sta.sh/0g49fuytjjy (with his human Mordekai) and an older pic of
them with outdated info: http://fav.me/d37kk5g
So a "favored spirit" would be something like Griffin but not Griffin. He is very partial to
his karkians so he would probably not answer a summon from anyone else, or behave
cold/trollish if they force-summoned him.
They aren't being mass-murdered/chased away/whatever by other races, they just have
a low birth-rate and are reclusive to the point where it negatively affects their birthrate.
Though they can get discriminated and made fun of, e.g. put on a leash naked and
kicked around when they speak and not bark.
Welp, these people are one of the... four(?) animal people on Tetra, an other one is the celestians:

Deviantart is too "official" for this, tumblr's format sucks (fuck you i won't chop the
picture up just so i can upload it), i'm not on Twitter and Facebook would compress the
picture into an ugly pile of utter garbage. Hello, FA.

This is incredible!! Makes me want to work on my own stuff again. Really lovely, and awesome/pleasing layout too.
Uhh, what brushes do you use?? Especially for the environment pictures on the corner. I really need to find some.
Largely the basic photoshop brushes, and a bit of a self-made brush. Preview: http://sta.sh/061r7zlihji It's easy to make your own, it's basically a wobbly blob with a sharp and a soft side, plus a little texture from a paper i scanned (it's the one named Egret).
inspiring... might reference this too when fleshing out more of my main sona's northern tribe.. such clothing ^.^
I didn't say they have a canine nose, just that the people are called canines - they have a rather rabbit-like nose.
Given the non-21th century non-Earthlike biology knowledge of the average Tetran Joe, it's not that strange, but if they were 21th century terran Joes, it would be a bit strange, yes.
well the people readying it kind of art 21st century earthan joes.....
if something isn't a dog why call it a dog? that's like idk, calling a cat a frog.

There is the method of either naming things in an in-universe manner or from an outsider's perspective, and i do the former. When approaching a fantasy world, one usually won't try to apply Earth-like logic, given that it's in the definition of fantasy worlds that they are different from Earth. It does not matter that the readers are from Earth. The Tetrans have no knowledge of Terrans or what Terrans call a canine.
Additionally, the name canine is applied to them because what they most resemble are canines; the only distinctly non-canine feature is the nose, and when there is so little tying them to something non-wolf-like, it makes no sense actually to call them something else than canine. And while in the animal kingdom they might not be classified canines but as hybrids, in the human subrace sense it's sensible, as none of the other animal-like races come even close to looking like canines. These are the components of the logic by which Tetrans named them canines.
Then there is also the fact that from the Earthlike perspective, they are neither like canines, rabbits, or whatever they resemble, as these people are bipedal, sentient, have hands, etc - these things would disqualify them more from being canines than a nose shape.

They have really interesting muzzles and noses for a wolf/canine race. It looks more like a reindeer's to me for some reason.
It's more like a reindeer's, yeah. When i was designing the kid, on one sketch it looked like he has a rabbit's or reindeer's nose (it's not shiny and fur covers it often) and i left it that way because i liked it, and then i applied the nose to the entire race. On the top right picture with him dancing he still has a doggy nose, but on the other sketches under it not anymore, for this reason. ^^
Dis is my jam. Now you just need some woofers of the aurora australis!
Hmmh i actually didn't make these for either south or north, i'm not at the point where i start differentiating the looks of the two populations (there's no need for it yet). But i wonder what would the Aurora be called instead of Australis. The closest continent is called Elisea and aurora elise..alis...??? sounds dumb so definitely not that :u
Beautiful work, your character and concept sheets are always so amazing <3
