Walpurgis is a European spring festival on 30 of April or 1 of May.
It's mainly celebrated in...
Sweden=Valborg
Finland=Vappu
Germany and Netherlands=Walpurgisnacht
Estonia=Volbriöö
Lithuania=Valpurgijsnaktis
Latvia=Valpurgu
and the Czech Republic=Valpurzinia or Carodejnice
The festival can be traced to pre-christian time when people celebrated that the winter was over and summer was on its way. But later it became the day of the english missionary saint Walpurga (710-779).
But the Swedes kept celebrating the upcoming of summer instead of her.
In sweden Walpurgis is celebrated by lightning large bonfires, dancing,sining,shoot fireworks, blow horns, make a lot of noise and (of course) drinking large amounts of alcohol.
In the old days people believed that supernatural forced where active on this day.
Ghosts, trolls and witches where running amok during this time and the fire and noisemaking was ment to keep them on distance.
In Dala-Floda in Sweden it's a tradition to put on creepy costumes.
The point of this is to scare the trolls away by simply being uglier than them.
These dressed up people are called Valborrar.
Here is an old film showing how it was celebrated in Sweden in the old days https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sB8a47dw-DQ
In the Czech-Republic they have something called Paleni Parodejnic (Burning the witches) or Carodejnice (The witches)
It's celebrated by burning rag and staw witches or just broomsticks.
In Estonia they dress up as witches and wander the streets in carnival like way.
Similar hollidays can be found around the world
The Irish and Scottish have Beltrane.
And in the Middle-East they have Nowruz.
