Subnautica is such an interesting game. I love the idea of an underwater alien planet, but at the same time it terrifies me. Deep, dark water filled with large and dangerous creatures that'll kill you as soon as they see you.
However, the story took a bittersweet turn when you discover the sea emperor prison...and the still-alive Emperor (or Empress, as it turns out). Though she is one of the largest creatures in the game, she is also the most passive. She can even communicate with you telepathically!
She offers you a trade: help her young hatch and reach the surface, and she'll give you a way out as well, as an enzyme that could cure the terrible disease plaguing the planet. Once you do this, all seems great; the babies hatch and briefly swim to their mother before turning around to the warp gate.
And then the Empress slumps over.
Her young's freedom means her end. But she's very happy that you were able to help, and hopes to meet you again in another life.
I wanted to make this piece because not only do I find it to be a very tragic scene, but me and other people agree on the one thing that could make it better. The character should turn around and comfort the Empress, then says his only dialogue in the game: "Thank You".
I think it's obvious that I recommend this game.

I actually screamed "Oh fuck you!" at the screen when it got to that point. The character who first inquired "Are you here to play?" lived for 2,600 years and keeled over the very minute we were finally free to play?
I pretty much cope by saying she only meant her time was at an end in terms of her own lifespan, a-la still got at least a decade in her.

Seriously though, great work! Found this through a random discord post so I was glad I was able to find the source.
Did a good job on expressing the exhaustion of the Emperor, the smallness of the player, and the immense emotional weight behind the death and sacrifice of a gentle giant.
