This is a piece I wrote a few years ago for Pierrot Ensemble (Piano, Violin, Cello, Flute, Clarinet) entitled "Stray Cat". This is a piece I wrote in the depths of depression and feeling of abandonment. My life is thankfully in better shape than it was at the time. I reflected upon seeing a stray cat in an alley, getting close to it, and then imagining in my head all the different scenarios that would happen with this cat during the night, trying to survive, trying to get by, which in many ways was how I felt about my own life at the time.
The fourth movement "Street Songs" is a sort of more melodic movement sort of singing out the "laws of the street" one must have in order to survive as the cat must do.
The fifth movement is sort of literally about rain, but rain in times of not being able to find shelter as a stray cat might find itself in. This is also sort of a metaphor for not finding help in times of need and needing to face the elements without any hope.
The sixth movement is a short and chaotic movement, the worst of experiences, the facing of a predator, the imminent danger of someone or something out on the streets out to kill you. Time becomes secondary as a stray cat must run to survive the immediate danger.
The three movements are as follows:
IV. Street Songs
V. Rain on Cement 3:12
VI. Natural Enemy 5:14
