The Greys are a cadet house of House Rowan, namely from Lord Cadwgawn Rhonwyn's bastard he sired on campaign with a nameless camp follower. Cadwgawm granted lands and title to the boy, whom the camp follower named Cadwgawn in his sire's honor, but did not allow him to take the name Rhonwyn. The Lord allowed him to take the family name of Ilwyd.

The House name of Ilwyd stood until the Miercinian conquest, where the name was translated from Tirgish to Viridish.
