[Animation] The First Step - Animation Test
A small step for Sonic... but the first towards an exciting future for us~
After much talks and teases about animations being possible... here it is, my first "prototype". It's very rough, the animation itself is janky and with glaring mistakes... but this isn't really meant to be art or even fapping material... this is just proof of concept. This is me showing myself and everyone else that yes, I can do it, and yes, I won't stop until it looks amazing.
"Why just a step (or a few actually)?" you might ask... Well, it's very convenient in many way, first being that animating a walk-cycle is a good learning exercise, and for someone that knows as little about animating as I do, those come in handy... second, it was one of the first things I thought to test my softbody setup on... having the sole touch the floor and be flatten by it is something I can't get enough of, I love it it's very sexy too , so a walk cycle fits that too, plus I can show off the wrinkles in action and show off how powerful the system I have in place can be. And, of course, it just fits thematically, almost poetically, with it being my first one... it's literally a first step in many levels.
I also made something simple and quick as means to gather info on what I need to do, what I need to change and what I need to learn to do animations right... optimization stuff, the bone names will need to be reworked on all my models (ugh), and I had to adapt the wrinkle simulation to be more realistic... the one I used was effective for still images... mostly because it turned the feet into soggy gelatin to do the wrinkles. I guess you can imagine why it had to be changed when the foot starts moving during the simulation. The results of that change speaks for itself in this render :p
And lastly there's the point of render times... the dreaded reality of 3D animation. I've been putting off and waiting to start working on animations for a year now, and this was the reason... rendering an animation in good quality on Blender's raytracing would take hours and hours.. I can easily do a 30 min render for a single high-def image, but when you need to do those 30 times for a single second worth of animation, then... yeah. So I was waiting... waiting for the magic of EEVEE, and so that new engine solved that problem. With extreme optimization testing, I got each frame of this animation to render in a bit over 1 second. So 1 frame per second, 30 fps in 720p... took 8 minutes to render the whole thing. Not bad if you ask me, not bad at all~ Sure, this was just a pair of legs walking by themselves on a flat plane with one light source... I'm sure that the time to render a scene more complex will increase exponentially... but hey, at least there's hope... before eevee it would have been leaving my pc rendering a 5 minute animation overnight, having my poor midrange PC baking itself to death for 12 hours.
So... in the short term, this doesn't mean much to yall... I'll continue my tests, practicing between commissions and improving my skills, whenever I get something worth showing, I'll do so~ And before anyone asks, no, this is NOT EVEN CLOSE to being commission-ready, I wouldn't expect to open animation commissions for over a year, likely. I'll make sure I know well what I'm doing before taking money for it. Yall that commissioned me know that I strive for the best quality possible for maximum satisfaction, so that applies to this as well.
I hope you enjoy it, and if for some reason you can't watch the SWF, here's a MP4 download link for you: https://sta.sh/01o8x9tm8aoq

My dude, oh my gosh <3 You're just always improving, huh? Aaaa!! This is just so freaking good!!
nah that one was me 15 years ago learning to move a ball in macromedia flash
this one is he_stepp.mp4

Don't beat yourself up, this is very very good, especially for a first attempt. It looks super awesome.
This is a great scene and I think that you're off to a good start in the process of computer animation.
also you did work with the foot flattening out ( one of the sexiest things ever as per that scene in avatar)
Howed you do it? I assume in blender? but with a mesh deformer on those bottom verticies? :D
Lastly, damn, I bet this took a long time to render. When ever I did animations i set the resolution low and did it overnight haha, still had half way to go by morning.
I really hope we see more of this, would be amazing to see the whole sonic in a shot with his wiggly toes, and I know you'll get to it some day <3

blender has a thing called softbody physics simulation, I use that for the wrinkles and the collision.
also read the description for the render times :p

I did and I got it and I'm happy.. But.. my companion program, sensei which reduces blender clutter isn't optimised for it yet. So I tried without it and noticed that many of my fave plugins for import aren't working like xps or mmd. The one xps I did find optimised for 2.8 simply doesn't import the mesh and all my old projects open up with strange colorizations like the textures never existed... Otherwise, damn son does it ever render fast, to fast, I'm scared of what I'll accomplish with it lol
you know, you can import on 2.79, save, then open the file with 2.8
I know, however My textures no longer are applicable to my meshes :/ I end up with just a faded scene and attempting to re apply textures has no effect :/
Its also worth mentioning that without sensei blender's interface makes absolutely no sense to me.
And so I wait haha

I'm a little annoyed by the fact that Sonic's legs are very thin, (I understand that this is the original but still)
Work with the folds of the sole of the foot is very good.
It will be cool to see full clips

Wow this got a lot of potential!
Great job! Can't wait to see the final result :p
(if you might need some rendering power I think I could help you somehow, feel free to pm!)

Now we just need some foot ASMR, the sounds of soles slapping softly on the floor, and this would be perfect
oh my~ I'd like that...
specially if the feet providing the sounds are yours =u=

For a first, you've done an amazing job here. I've been making a few GIF animations myself from time to time for about five years now. If I can make animations, I don't see why you couldn't.
can you do one where he walks towards the camera, such good art btw
man, once you start making feet licking animations, boy this is gonna be a wild ride.
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA! ANIMATION! I AM OVERJOYED! I CAN'T EXPRESS HOW OVERJOYED I AM! AND IT'S SO PERFECT!
O_O This is just beyond amazing! Such wonderful feet soles and how it wrinkles too!
You have done something amazing here. And I *love* feet alot!
