I recently remembered how muuuch I loved Sam Eagle and the Muppets in general but never did him justice in my art. 4 years after having drawn him, I tried again. Have I told you I had a crush on that overly patriotic censor when I was 14 ? I really have a thing for stern older men with aquiline noses/beaks/snouts/whatever. Last times I drew him I thought he wasn't good enough. Maybe too blue, maybe too close of my style than the Muppets'. I tried to remedy
As Sam in the 2015 ABC show thinking "shaking hands" is sexual would totally be flustered if he was ever asked to hold his crush's hand, or if he saw a couple holding hands in public, but more if his crush asked him
It's a bit sad Sam, being a puppet, only has one face like most muppets. Sure it's symbolical, it shows his resting bitch face is his default face. But sometimes I wish he would appear in more official comics or a cartoon so we would see him being appaled, furious, cringing, shocked, crying of frustration etc like he does in the show always with the same puppet face, just moving his eyes right to left

For those who forgot my post Sam is canonly a divorced father of a son and a daughter, both children having disappointed him, the son studying taxidermy and the daughter dating an owl. His ex-wife Eunice had flown the coop even before an official divorce, and his college student children never write to him (implying they either sided with the mother or are just too tired of his narrow-minded attitude). I said I HC that seeing how he sounded regretful and wanting to avoid the subject and was quite bitter about what they did to him implies not only that he was crushed by the divorce (maybe he still loved Eunice when she did that) and really misses his children. HC all of that made him ever more sour and stern than ever, and that there are phases he feels low again ; as he canonly tends to drink a bit too much in bars as we see in the ABC show and Jungle Boogie, maybe he tries to drown himself in his tears and alcohol when that happens even years later, to the barman's (here Rowlf) embarrassment. Another HC is that when he's drunk he doesn't realizes if he swears or not, and keeps on bragging about the past until he passes out
I know no fictional character as patriotic to US as Sam, it's so ridiculous I love him despite not being American myself
My favorite Muppet movie will always be Muppets Treasure Island, the music and songs are catchy and awesome, the humor is on point, the relationship between Jim Hawkins and Long John Silver is as touching as it's supposed to be, I like how there are darker themes such as murder (pirates, after all)... AND SAM IS ONE OF THE MAIN CHARACTERS AND I LOOOOOOVE HIS ROLE AS SAMUEL ARROW AND LOVE HIS COSTUME AAAH
Contrary to some, I loved the 2015 show on ABC and I am furious a bunch of Helen Lovejoys had to have it deleted because "THINK OF THE CHILDREN" despite the fact it was clearly turnt to older audience and that the Muppet Show WAS TOO. THE FREAKING PILOT WAS TITLED "SEX AND VIOLENCE", THAT'S WHY SAM IS HERE AS THE CENSOR HE TRIES TO STOP INDECENCY TO STEP IN THE SHOW AND HE WAS HIMSELF A CARICATURE OF ALL THE PEOPLE COMPLAINING THAT ONE THING IS NOT FAMILY FRIENDLY ETC COME ON ahem anyway I loved it and loved Sam in it... EXCEPT FOR ONE THING. For some reason we'll never know, the writers thought it was a goooood idea to make him have an OOC stalking crush on Janice. Freaking Janice. Not only it made no sense (he hates the Electric Mayhem and she's part of them, and he never payed attention to her when she's alone in other medias, except the comics Muppets Peter Pan in which she plays as Wendy and he as HER FREAKING FATHER), but it made him OOC and borderline creepy as fuck !!! (stalking her home, pretending to like hippy things just to please her while Sam would never "lower himself", the fact he's like 20-30-40 years older than her I mean sure I have some age gap ships but I doubt Sam would have this standard, the fact he's assuming that her greeting him means she loves him, the fact he's acting all gushy and excited like a Japanese schoolgirl when she sees Senpai despite the fact he is a divorced man who made a woman pregnant 2 times so he should be a little bit less cheesy than that, the fact the writers did that only because "durr she hippy he hate hippy that funny" and as she was the only girl she had to pay because noooooo Sam can't be attracted by a male, the fact HE DID PLAY AS HER FATHER IN MUPPETS PETER PAN) So I had to fix this in my HC continuity. In my HC, no only he was wanting to convince himself he was not gay after feeling things for that handsome French detective (I ship it) and for Dr Teeth (I ship it sexually not romantically but still), he was suffering to be alone and loveless. So he confessed what to do to Mildred and she advised to try to flirt to feel young again. Our idiot eagle took it literally (feel young : seek something reminding you of your youth), and as in my HC Eunice had the same hair cut as Janice and a similar clothing style and that her name ends like Eunice's, he thought it was a sign and as he can be very very stubborn he convinced himself she was the one, and it was not sincere so that's why he was exagerating, he was more in love with the idea of being in love than Janice herself. Fortunetaly some time after the show's end he would realize he was being OOC and would be scandalized he lowered himelf that much (pretending to love things he always fought against was the last straw for his temper and his honor), and thinking she didn't know but could have noticed he was constantly behind her he found her, explained and apologized. Janice being a sweetie, she forgave and assured she was not that bothered (she's sooooo high she must have noticed but not noticed at the same time). But still feeling he learnt a lot about her meanwhile, he would think in his eagle brain she could be "rescuable" from these "Electric Mayhem" freakos and spend time with her not as a stalker but trying to be a mentor. They then would start a sort of father-daughter relationship him missing his kids and Janice being around his daughter's age and Janice having not seen her father ever since they argued about her life plans as a teen ; sure Sam is basically trying to do the same but she appreciates that at least he hangs out with her while her father basically banished her. He would then try to protect her from other hooligans ("Is this Floyd truely fitting for boyfriends duty.") and both would try to understand, not necessarily like but at least understand, each other's worlds
I have the headcanon, as sometimes Sam is seen with his eyebrows and remaining hair combed, sometimes crazy, that as classy as he is he would actually comb these everymorning to look decent, but all the stress from the Muppet show would quickly mess his feathers in nervosity. It's also canon Sam drinks a lot of coffee and (I lost the source, I remember it was semi canon but I can't remember where) that when there is no camera he is a heavy smoker
Of course, it's obvious to me Sam is bi, probably closetted but bi anyway. Not gay either as he did feel love and/or lust towards women (Eunice, Gloria Goodbody, that bare midriff dancing girl in Muppets From Space, Big Fat Ugly Bug-Faced Baby-Eatin' O'Brian, and as fake as it was Janice), but he definetely does for men too (don't tell me there isn't a sexual tension between him and Dr Teeth in Jungle Boogie, especially as it was in Sam's drunken dream and that it seemed to be a positive dream ; aaaaand of course Jean Pierre Napoléon, which Ty Burrell called "a platonic love story" and Eric Jacobson saying they are lovers and their meeting was a meetcute (the cinema cliché when 2 characters will end up together but when they meet they are rivals)), but as it's not really fitting his conservative thoughts, I think Sam would deny for a long time, especially about Dr Teeth, before ending up to admit shortly after the 2015 show and calling back the French Interpol agent
