3 Months later
“Huff! Urk!” The werewolf felt himself pant heavily. Finally making it to the top of the stairs, he lifted his arms up. “There! I did it! I took to the stairs! Now, can I have my cake?”
“That was one rep out of ten….” Dillon remarked, clutching the bag with the cake in it in his hand. “You literally just walked up a single flight of stairs, and you’re already winded?”
“What’s it to ya?” the werewolf grimaced, leaning over to breathe a little more heavily.
Dillon scratched his head. “Uh…. I just don’t remember you ever getting winded by stairs, Sarge. As fat as a werewolf you are, you were always very active and could run up flights of stairs easily.”
Sergeant Wolf snarled. “Okay, so? I got older, Dillon! Maybe my athletic abilities has finally failed and I just can’t climb steps like I used to.”
“That was… a few months ago.” Dillon thought. “Right before you went to that voluntary study place.”
“The guy who said he was gonna hypnotize me but didn’t do it cuz I had gym scheduled that day?” Sergeant Wolf finally got his breath back and began to laugh. “Don’t quite get what he did, myself, but I certainly don’t feel any different from before!”
“What happened to walking to the store? You usually walk there… but is your ‘failing metabolism’ why we drove there today?” Dillon frowned.
“Stairs are hard, okay? I haven’t been able to take a flight of steps in months! Cut me some slack!” The werewolf’s ears went back and he continued his snarl. “I just wanted to try driving to the store. It’s rather far, y’know!”
Dillon’s eyes widened. “Five blocks is too far? Are you sure you aren’t sick, Sarge?” Dillon put his hand to Sarge’s forehead. “You’re… warm and sweaty….”
“I just walked up stairs!” The werewolf retorted.
“A single flight of fifteen steps.” Dillon took a step back. “No need to get snappy, Sarge. I’m just worried about you.”
“Well stop worrying. Like I said, I feel just the same as I always have…. I’ve just gotten a bit fatter and… maybe I enjoy drinking more, okay?”
“You are also wearing a white tank top.” Dillon remarked, poking at Sarge’s belly. “And it’s too small for you.”
“I… haven’t gone to get clothes in a while beca-“
“It’s too far?” Dillon cocked an eyebrow. “Clothing shop’s two blocks south of here.”
The werewolf wanted to remark, but he said nothing. He looked down at his belly, indignantly giving it a shake. “It fit me a month ago.”
“Then you put on a lot of weight recently. How about we hit the gym, then?” Dillon scratched his belly, frowning. “Not so much to lose weight, but help you not get winded while climbing stairs.”
“I’ll have you know that I’m perfectly healthy!” The werewolf scoffed, pulling out his drink and chugging it. He finished it off easily, showing his belly was bloating from all the liquid he drank. “I just don’t want to exercise anymore, okay? It’s dumb!”
“It’ll start to show on you, Sarge.” Dillon took a step back, examining the werewolf. “Actually, it already has. You’re a bit smelly today, Sarge. What happened to your lavender bodywash?”
“I ran out so-“
“So you couldn’t go to the store to get more because it was too far. I get it.” Dillon put his hands up, looking away in annoyance.
“No?” Sergeant Wolf lifted an arm, giving his pit a whiff. He seemed a bit self-conscious of Dillon’s remark at first, but upon sniffing himself, he shrugged. “I just stopped showering.”
Dillon lifted a finger to protest, but put it back down. “Oh….” He looked down the stairs. “Well, are you ready to take a flight of steps down? My apartment’s on the first floor.”
Sergeant Wolf looked down the steps, making an audible whine. “But I just walked up the stairs already! Isn’t that enough exercise?”
“With how your body’s turning out, no….” Dillon gestured to the stairs. Sergeant Wolf groaned and walked down them.
The werewolf was confused at his own actions. It didn’t seem to make much sense as to why he didn’t want to be healthier. Halfway down the steps, he felt his heart begin to race and he started to pant. This stair walking was certainly a workout…. Yeah, he didn’t want to do this exercise junk anyway.
