Total Eclipse of the Sun
Total Eclipse of the Sun - Artist’s Impression
I was only a few hours away from the path of totality in 2017 and made the trip to nowhere, Wyoming see the solar eclipse. I ran back to my laptop and painted this right after it ended, to preserve the memory. It looked very different in photos but to the naked eye, this is how I saw it, from where I was standing on a ridge. A tiny glowing ring in the sky. The sky had slowly dimmed to what seemed like late afternoon but in an instant it abruptly turned to purple sunset.
One of the wildest things I’ve ever seen.

I went to Idaho to see it and camped out in the Sawtooth mountains for two days around the eclipse. When totality occurred I was completely alone and the experience was just stunning. The pink flares around the sun, the sudden chill as the lights went out, the eerie liminal feeling. I'm already planning to see the 2024 eclipse in Texas.
