[it opens to Dustin watching the Nicktoons channel]
Commercial Announcer: and now brand new episodes of R-BUCK only on Nicktoons!
Dustin: pfft that's another cancelled show [changes the channel as Blake walked in]
Blake: Hey, Dustin. What are you up to today?
Dustin: watching the Nicktoon Graveyard
Blake: The Nicktoon Graveyard, huh?
Dustin: yup AKA just plain Nicktoons this isn't fair it wasn't always like this you know
Dustin: back in the 2000's the Nicktoons channel was a very special kind of place it was in a way like Cartoon Network's Boomerang where they play old shows that have been long cancelled they also sometimes play a few random shorts that were either shown on the American Nickelodeon channel long ago or were import shorts like Spider and Fly and the Aardman animated short series The Presentators
Blake: Oh, I see. Any ones standing out to you?
Dustin: oh yeah a few KaBlam! and Oh Yeah! Cartoons for one but we've already talked about them there was also a few other shows i remember imports like Kaput & Zosky, my favorite The Secret Show and couple others like Making Fiends, Random Cartoons which introduced Adventure Time, Kappa Mikey, Mr. Meaty--
Blake: Please don't mention that last one... It still gives me indigestion <.<
[Blake then realized the name of the show Dustin said before Mr. Meaty]
Blake: Wait.. did you say Kappa Mikey?
Dustin: yeah but i've kinda moved from that for real Anime [looks in an Ecchi magazine]
Blake: Hey, come on. I remember watching Kappa Mikey when I was a kid, and I remember it being a lot of fun. The idea of a Western style cartoon character interacting with anime characters is a really original idea :)
Dustin: hmm... yeah i guess you're right... ah what the hell? i guess we got a Woodfox Talks and Rants topic today :-)
Blake: Ikuze! Let's do this!
Dustin: of course our story begins with a man by the name of Larry Schwartz the founder and CEO of Animation Collective, the New York City-based producer of children's programming for television, the Internet and home video in 2004 Schwartz made a few commercial shorts for the Nicktoons channel which would later change their name to Nicktoons Network the shorts were Leader Dog and Tortellini Western both shows were in the flash animation style as it has become a big new style in animation since Mucha Lucha premiered back in 2002 but would eventually get better with the release of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic in 2010 gamanyways in 2006 Schwartz created an interesting new show that would blend both the cartoony sometimes rubbery styles of American Animation with the awesome sometimes realistic styles of Japanese Anime that was Kappa Mikey!
Blake: We're introduced to Mikey Simon, a young man who came to Japan after winning a LilyMu contest entry. Having lived most of his life in America, there are things about Japan he doesn't understand, but with awesome friends, he's able to find his way through his problems
Dustin: indeed let's go over each of the main characters one by one with Mikey Simon he's pretty much your big-headed fame loving doofus who really enjoys his new life in Japan as an action hero for TV though sometimes he can often be the cause for any kind of accident that happens on the set which is one of the main running gags of the show X3
Blake: There's also Gonard. On TV, he plays a Dragon Ball Z inspired villain, but off camera, he's Mikey's big hearted goofy headed best friend. And fun fact, he's voiced by Sean Schemmel, the voice of adult Goku
Dustin: and there's Mitsuki a cute blue haired girl who is a very nice person who has a big crush on Mikey [even though he's totally oblivious to notice] and she's also the total opposite of another main girl on this show who i'll let Blake take over on
Blake: Next is Lily, the namesake of the series within the series. Within the series, she's a damsel in distress; off camera, she is a snobby so and so who lets fame go to her head. Typically walking around in a school uniform, or Seifuku, Lily is a conceited being, and oblivious to Mikey's crush on her or rather, she knows, but she's just taking advantage of him
Dustin: also there's Guano and no he doesn't look like bat poo he's kinda like a Pikachu lookalike similar to Ling-Ling from Drawn Together he's the director and creator of Lilymu he's mostly ever seen in this same costume with the exception of a couple rare moments in the show i'd say he's probably a midget in a Pikachu costume that's my only probable solution to him
Blake: And then there's their producer, Ozu. While Ozu often appeared to be short tempered and strict, he does care very much for the cast and wouldn't let anything hurt them for real
Dustin: indeed Ozu can have some very funny moments he makes me think of Mojo Jojo if he was Japanese unless you have a better comparison Blake X3
Blake: He almost reminds me of a more cynical Jerry from Totally Spies with a bit of Kaz from Hi Hi Puffy Ami Yumi
Dustin: oooo very good anyways the show was in a way pretty good an comedic there are episodes i like or don't like depending on the plot but it was alright my personal favorite characters are Mikey, Gonard and Mitsuki with Mikey and Gonard i see a kind of Spongebob and Patrick relationship with these two in a way as for Mitsuki... well she's pretty hot i like her a lot more than Lily that's for sure and she has some pretty cute moments :3
Blake: Indeed. Most of the episodes either involve shenanigans for LilyMu or shenanigans off as Mikey learns more about his new home in Japan
Dustin: yeah :) also the main joke of this show is actually on Mikey himself as well as a few minor Western characters that appear from time to time but we'll just center on Mikey for this for example Mikey has a thick black outline while the Anime characters have normally thin outlines and Mikey has four fingers while the Anime characters have all five and while the Anime characters can chibify themselves and either get bigger heads or show strong reactions Mikey does not have the ability to do that since he isn't animated like that XD
Blake: Oddly, the episode that I remember the most is when Mikey somehow gets a pimple; a rather large one at that. They needed to figure out how to hide this pimple because it's on a side of Mikey's face that is often seen on camera. He had to own up to this problem to Ozu, but Ozu came up with a solution
Dustin: one episode i remember is the one where he got a Dragon Spike sword thing and everyone wanted him to use it for something it was pretty funny X3 the show lasted a good while with 2 seasons and 52 episodes on Nicktoons and re-ran the episodes until 2011 but when i got access to YouTube and got into other types of anime [mainly mature ones] i sorta had a falling out with this show...
Blake: Oh, I see. Though, you seem to be showing enthusiasm about this now
Dustin: yeah it's mainly because i forgot how funny this show can be sometimes it has great jokes and hilarious delivery i guess i spoiled myself with anime like Ranma, Agent Aika and more recently My Hero Academia over time ^///^
Blake: I guess that happens with a lot of people; thinking you might be losing interest in something, but as it turns out, you still have an appreciation for it :)
Dustin: yeah :) after Kappa Mikey Larry made a couple more shows for Nicktoons Three Delivery in 2008 and Speed Racer: The Next Generation the same year i've never watched them but i still fondly remember Kappa Mikey and even though the Nicktoons channel is now known as the channel where failed Nicktoons that aren't Spongebob go to die silently at least we can remember it was something especially since Kappa Mikey was actually the first original program on that channel that wasn't on the main Nickelodeon channel :)
Blake: Indeed. Who knows; with more animated cartoons coming and going, there may be other shows that had the same air as Kappa Mikey, where it stuck out in a interesting way and will be remembered for a long time
Dustin: indeed [sighs happily] good to get that out of my system :)
Blake: I'm glad to be here to celebrate that special moment :)
Dustin: thanks again :) see you next time guys :)

Woodfox Talks & Rants Textisode 84: Kappa Mikey
in this textisode Blake and i take a look at the Nicktoons Network's first original program that wasn't seen on the main Nickelodeon channel as well as the first animation that blends both Western and Japanese animation

After everything that's been happening lately, I've mixed feelings about everything that involves Sean Schemmel, especially this since I kinda like Kappa Mikey.
