Final Fantasy 7, One Winged Angel Cover
To commemorate the upcoming release of the HD remake of Final Fantasy 7, here is the song that makes me wish I was part of an orchestra.
This is easily my biggest undertaking in my time as a musician. It was so big that I could never truly get to a point where I thought it was perfect. But I wanted to do this song. This is the latest version I was okay with.
'The last thoughts of the geostigma's dead. Those remnants will join the Lifestream and girdle the planet. Choking it... corroding it. What I want, Cloud, is to sail the darkness of the cosmos with this planet as my vessel, just as my mother did long ago. Then one day we'll find a new planet. And on its soil, we'll create a shining future.' -Sephiroth, the One Winged Angel.

Please consider buying me a coffee. This took so much time and energy to make, and all help is appreciated.

Oh dearie me! That cover was so good that I'm downright scared to ask how long it took you to make this. It is clear as day that you put A LOT of effort into this song and it came out beautifully. This one definitely deserves a coffee. :3
Just like your last magnificent cover, this one has so many neat little details which I like, that I'm frankly not sure how I should even approach it. You mentioned that this is the song that makes you wish, you were part of an orchestra, right? Well your cover made me wish the same. It made me wish that I was part of an orchestra, so that I could properly name and praise all the amazing sounding instruments you used in your song. Listening to your cover time and time again has made me realize how limited my own knowledge about music truly is and knowing how many hours and how much effort it must have taken to compose this I'm very worried about getting something horribly wrong and not doing your song justice-doubly so, because I'm currently in a highly debilitating and stressfull situation and have to take care of a lot of very important things. But I can clearly see how much energy you put into this, so I will do my best to give you the best reply I possibly can.
Though before we get into the music itself, there's something else I need to adress: Oh my goodness, it's so great to see your thoughts on this song! :D I really missed seeing you talk about the songs you cover. Reading your own thoughts about the songs you cover was incredibly captivating and that's why I'm very happy to see it return.
Now on to the song! I'll start off with a few things I liked about this song in general. It's a bit hard for a non musician like me to put this into words but your instruments sound a lot more like... actual instruments than in the original and they seem to blend together much better as well. Another thing I once again love to pieces is your phenomenal use of panning, though I'll go into a bit more detail about that later on.
And something else, which I want to praise is your phenomenal use of the choir and the singing voices. I should mention that one of the things I like the most about "One Winged Angel" are the incomprehensible but awesome lyrics that accompany the song. So when I saw your new cover, my initial reaction was: "Phew, how is she going to solve the problem of not having lyrics? This seems like an uphill battle for her." And I got a tad worried about that, since it reminded me of your "Rivers in the Desert" cover, where the song itself was quite good but unfortunately ended up feeling a bit lacking due to not having the perfect lyrcis of the original. But here! Here you used the singing voices very well! To the point where it was almost on par with the original choir. And that is a huge compliment from someone like me, who likes the song specifically for it's lyrics. I especially want to comment on your use of the singing from 3:20 to 3:51 because I felt like it was on point there. I love how it's just the singing voice and a single instrument in the beginning until that intimidating violin joins in at 3:28 along with another instrument. This constant adding of new instruments to a song is something which I personally appreciate a lot and it's so cool, how the singing voice changes at 3:36. It sounds so intimidating and it gets even more awing at 3:44. Seriously at that point it genuinely felt like the song itseslf had a dark opressive aura for a few seconds. Awesome choir! I spent quite a lot of time on this point but I really want to drive home, how much I like this, as it really feels like you have improved as an artist. Good job! :)
I'd also like to mention a few specific things and song segments, which I liked and appreciated. And just like last time, my appreciation for this cover already starts within the first few seconds. The drums and the wind instrument (trombone?) go very well together and I apprecite that they're a bit more subtle here, when compared to the original. Don't get me wrong, I liked the more bombastic sound of the orginal version too, no doubt! But there were several occasions, where this bombasticness was just too much for me. To the point where some parts sounded straight up too loud. Your version on the other hand sounded a lot more balanced and was never too loud or bombastic, while having just as much oomph as the Final Fantasy 7 version. It was even more epic but also a bit more subtle and restrained and that made for a suprisingly good combo. And man the first 6 second sounded so good on headphones! You could genuinely feel the vibrations of the wind instrument in the right earphone and the beat of the drums almost made it seem as if there was a bit of pressure on my ears. So awesome! <3
Hehe. And then we get to 0:06 to 0:10. That one part, which is so damn famous that I even knew it, before I knew what Finaly Fantasy 7 was. XD And you know what? I think it sounds the best here. Yup! Out of every version of this track I ever heard, yours managed to get this part the best. And since this is one of the most famous parts out of any Final Fantasy Track, that is no small feat! I would say that this isn't surprising, since you're a violinist but... Actually are those violins? Because I always wondered what kind of instrument is playing here. I know it's likely a string instrument and my bet would be on violin but in this case I really don't wanna mess it up.
And while we're talking about awesome instruments, whose name I sadly don't know: What is the name of that beautiful instrument whose lovely sound is filling my right ear from 0:14 to 0:18? Is that a piano? Uh! Uh! And what's that sweet instrument that plays during 0:19 for a split second? Because it's awesome. And sounds amazing. And serves as a perfect bridge to the next instrument. And what about that subtle little instrument that's playing in my left ear from 1:39 to 1:41? It's so delicate I almost didn't hear it but adds such a nice flavour to this song. I also think it plays shortly during 4:25 and 4:29. And yooooo! :O What's that super subtle sound in my left ear at 3:36? It's pretty hard to make out and I even overheard it a few times but man it's good! I could hear it till 3:50 and every time I heard it, it was sheer awesomeness. It's so subtle but adds such an indtimidating atmosphere to this part and I love it. Just like I love that short bell which chimes at 3:54 and 3:58. And can we talk about how amazing the part from 4:16 to 6:10 is and how amazingly you made use of the wind instruments here? Ugh, now I wish I was an actual musician, then I could name all of them. I love how one wind instrument starts playing in the left at 4:18, then gets replaced by another one on the right side at 4:25 AND THEN TURNS INTO TWO INSTRUMENTS AT 4:29! Ahhh, it's such a brilliant part!
And the panning! Holy smokes, the panning was so amazing that I can't even comment on every moment of good panning because then I would have to talk about almost EVERY SINGLE moment of this song. 0.0 Seriously there are so many instances, where different instruments are playing on different sides of my headphones and they mix so well together and it... ARGH, IT JUST SOUNDS SO AMAZINGLY AWESOME I CAN'T TAKE IT! <3 I can't even imagine how many hours it must have taken to hone the panning to this level but it was definitely worth it, because this is just a straight up eargasm. An eargasm that goes on for 7 minutes straight and has so many awesome little nuances that I'm feeling incredibly bad for not being able to comment on any single one of them, because there are just so many. So... Congratulations Aliyah. You officially made a song that's so good, that I feel like I'm unfit to properly review to it. Well done! ^_^
This is without a doubt the best and most sophisticated song you have ever made and I am in awe over how much hard work and thought you put into it. This song is a new pinnacle of your music and an impressive proof of how much you've grown and evolved as an artist.
And in light of such greatness I want to confess something. I'm... Actually not a good musician. Or a capable music critic. Or any good with anything music related at all. Like seriously, I SUCK when it comes to music. I can barely distinguish instruments from each other. I can't play any instrument myself. Hell, I can't even read notes, because my school music lessons sucked and nobody ever taught me how to do it. And given how amazing your last 2 covers were I'm slowly starting to wonder, if I'm even able to give you adequate feedback on your songs anymore. Take this reply for example. I spent over 12 hours writing it, yet I still feel like it doesn't do justice to your magnificent music piece. But at the same time... I also can't wait to hear, what amazing new cover you will make next; can't wait to write my next overly long reply; and most certainly can't wait to see what amazing heights you'll reach in the future. You're awesome Aliyah. And the fact that you're still continuing to make new music despite all the horrible shit you went through is inspiring as fuck to me. YOU are inspiring to me.
I never got to tell you this but I actually bought myself an old keyboard recently. I've secretly been yearning to learn how to play an instrument for years now but I just couldn't get into it, because I wasn't feeling so well the last few years and thus wasn't very motivated. But when you started sharing your covers with me, I was so happy to hear your music and so impressed by your songs that it made me want to learn how to make music as well. It was so cool how you always made new song covers that I wanted to be cool like you as well. And so I finally managed to get up, buy myself a used keyboard and even got a few books on how to read notes. I haven't begun practicing yet, due to how hectic and stressfull the last few months were but once everything has settled down I want to do my best to finally learn how to read notes and play an instrument and maybe even try to be a little bit of a musician as well. And that's all thanks to YOU Aliyah, thanks to how inspiring you and your songs were to me.
I'm aware that making songs probably isn't anything out of the ordinary for you but I honestly think that it's a pretty awesome thing to do-and that you're pretty damn cool for doing it. And your latest songs have been amazing. I have no idea why they haven't gotten a ton more likes and views because they're honestly fantastic. They're fantastic and they've also helped me a lot in my personal life. I can't go into much detail here but there has been a lot of bad, stressfull and dismally stuff going on with my life and your covers and comments are an immense help and one of the few things that keep me motivated right now. There's actually still a lot of really stressfull and worrying stuff going on right now and it will probably take me a little more than a week to figure everything out. I'll have to take care of a lot of very important things the next few days, so I might not be able to be here a lot-which is also the reason why I haven't been able to answer many of your awesome replies to me recently. So if I don't write a reply to one of your covers or comments then please don't think that I would mislike them, because it's the complete opposite. I love seeing new covers and comments from you and if I shouldn't be able to write anything then it's likely just due to an extreme lack of time.
But once all of this is over and I have everything sorted out, I will treat you to a nice delicious cup of coffee. ^^ You more than deserve it. :) Though speaking of coffee... Is it ok with you, if I take a little time brewing you one? Or do you need a coffee right now? I know that you sometimes don't have a lot of coffee and hey that's perfectly fine. Everyone runs out of coffee from time to time. But I really don't want you to get into trouble for not having enough coffee. So if you really need some coffeebeans right now, then I wouldn't mind sharing some of mine with you. ^_^
Ah! And I think that ko-fi description is pretty badass. It's so beautifull when you're opening up like this and I appreciate you a highly for doing it. Plus if you say: "This took so much time and energy to make" then it probably translates to: "I spent 50 hours on this song and I'm so tired out that I'm close to passing out. Please give me a coffee, so that I can at least stay awake for the 10 seconds it takes me to get into bed." And that part with the 50 hours was only half joking. I wouldn't be surprised if you had really spent that much time on this song.
Oh! And about the fact that this song makes you wish you were part of an orchestra. Well if you really would like to be part of an orchestra one day... I think that's genuinely something you could successfully do, if you wanted. I know, you haven't played the violin in a while. But if you would get back into practicing then I really think your chances of getting into an orchestra would be very high. Maybe not now, seeing how dire the world has become. But someday in the future I could definitely see you as part of an official orchestra. :)
Just like your last magnificent cover, this one has so many neat little details which I like, that I'm frankly not sure how I should even approach it. I will at least try to answer the instrumental questions as best as I can.
The starting phase utilizes an orchestra of violins, a single viola and a piccolo. The piano sound you hear is a bright grand, which is this massive 6 foot piano used in grand orchestras. At 0:19 you hear a tuba using high notes at inhuman speeds, which I found fit nicely. At 1:39 you hear two tracks of trumpets. At 3:36 is the tuba once again. All wind instrument tracks in the main breakdown were two tracks of tubas, a trombone, a trumpet and a piccolo.
50 is a little generous, and totally overplaying the time I used on this. It was more like 40, and I still don't feel done.

eagerly starts taking notes Whoa, that's an impressive list of instruments! I wouldn't have been able to identify most of them on my own, so thank you kindly for your detailed answer. ^^ And no wonder that it took you so long to make this song, with such a large collection of instruments! I didn't even knew that a thing like a bright grand existed. I'll likely use this for future listenings to hone my sense of hearing for different instruments, so thanks.
Also about this: 50 is a little generous, and totally overplaying the time I used on this. It was more like 40, and I still don't feel done.
>spends an absolutely impressive 40 hours on her cover, resulting in one of the best songs she's ever made
>still insists that 50 hours is totally overplaying the time she used on it

Haha, oh Aliyah! ^_^ This modesty is something I've always liked about you. :) You're always so humble about your work and even if you make something that's seriously great, you still act like it's nothing-whether it's a funny story or another amazing song. It's something which I respect highly about you and also the reason, why I enjoy the rare occasions where you act high and mighty as much as I do.
Hihi but alright, I don't want you to feel like I'm overplaying anything if that's uncomfortable for you. So I will admit that I was exaggerating a bit in order to illustrate how humble you usually are. But still, 40 hours is incredible! 0.0 Even more so, since you don't even consider it done! I would absolutely love to hear a finalised version of this song, so if you ever want to hear my opinion on a new version of this cover feel free to share it with me. I would be honored to give you helpful feedback and comment on any changes and additions you make. ^^ Maybe you could release an updated version of this cover, once the next part of the remake comes out?
Well whatever you decide to do next, I want you to know that I'm very proud of you for making this cover and putting so much effort into it. You're amazing! :D (Also if you ever do make a second version of this, there's a tip I'd like to give you. Not sure if it's due to my headphones but there is a strange kind of audio effect from 3:17 to 3:20 and 6:06 to 6:10. Can you hear it too? The song sounds a little distorted there and I don't know enough about audio to determine why that is. I don't know if that's an issue with my computer or earphones but I still wanted to let you know about it.)
And on a seperate note: Good luck for the lottery! It made me super happy to see you participate, even if you don't win anything. But even so, I of course wish you luck and I hope you'll win something. :)
