spent some time doing xeno-biology on a mostly-jungle world. the coloring (minus most of the blue, that was added later) helped avoid running into things that didn't find out they couldn't eat you until *after* they took a bite - at which point they got annoyed because you tasted bad. for that same reason, the tail is detachable in three places. still actively avoids birds flying overhead.
