Nightlight is a highly gifted unicorn, but she also has special needs. She has Unicorn Syndrome, which is similar to Asperger's Syndrome. When things don't go her way, it doesn't simply upset her. It can outright painful — or even scary (cf. this article).
Nightlight desperately needs a space where she can feel in control. If she's forced into a situation where she doesn't feel in control, she may literally explode in anger. Or she may explode out of fear. Afterward, she may feel deeply ashamed of how she acted. If she caused serious harm, she will almost certainly be horrified.
Nightlight's big brother is one of few people who make her feel safe and warm. White Night's kindness and emotional intelligence can warm the hearts of some of the most stubborn people. When Nightlight goes crazy, his shielding powers can protect her from causing much damage. He has some psychological powers to help him search the heart of a person — and address the heart of the matter.

Visual Description:
Nightlight literally burns with anger. Her hair and tail are a raging fire, and her horn glows a bright magenta pink. Even her eyes are glowing a little. The angle makes the unicorn look tall and imposing.
Nightlight is a lightish purplish pink unicorn. She wears dark violet glasses with half-circle frames, and she has darkish purplish violet eyes. The mark on Nightlight's flank is the following:
A tall eight-point star that stands for the North Star; beside it are seven five-point stars that make the Big Dipper. The tall eight-point star is a bright reddish hot pink. The eight-point star is made of two perpendicular crosses — a tall one and a square one. To the upper right half is a triangle of light golden yellow hearts. The seven stars of the Big Dipper are white.

Ah! So you made a whole sequence out of Night Light's outburst when she becomes overwhelmed? The series of images and insights, despite having gone through them backwards, are very insightful and add some 'animation' to the mind as you kind of put yourself in her hooves prior to one of her 'explosive moments'.
The fact she can actually have fire on her post-explosion does say a lot as, if I guess, it is more a outward way to show how it can feel to be in such a situation. It's the initial 'BOOM!' that causes the actual damage as pent up and building anxiety, stress, and stimuli just require a release of 'Limit Break' proportions.

You can probably guess where the inspiration came from: that one-off moment in "Feeling Pinke Keen". Interestingly, that sixth sense of Pinkie's seems to have been neglected since then. Ironically, my parody and satire makes such moments important elements of my own series.
Sparklefire is my parody of Pinke Pie. (She was born with the name "Firespark", but she decided it needed more sparkle.) I'm thinking, she will normally feel more like Silverstream or Skystar than Pinkie Pie. It was her idea to arrange a party for Nightlight that accidentally triggered all the wrong emotions. Perhaps her sixth sense finally told her that something awful was about to happen -- but nearly everyone else thought she was raving like a lunatic.
Sparklefire's subconscious intuition may help Nightlight discover a sixth sense that all of us can develop.

Again, you create another 'arc' that, ideally, would focus on sparkle Fire and Night Light. The problem being how Sparkle Fire doesn't know how to respect boundaries by believing everyone loves what she does. Night Light, still unprepared for all the stimuli awaiting in her new home, is brought to one of her 'explosive' moments and this is your 'escalation'. The climax comes as, I'd imagine, Phoenix and White Knight work together to help Night Light be able to comfortably leave her 'safe space' while the others, with Star Lyre, work with Sparkle Fire to come to better understand 'The Golden Rule'. The conclusion would, in all likelihood, be something where a party is thrown but in a Maud Pie sort of way with reassurance from Phoenix and White Knight that all good things take time and how they are proud of how she taught Sparkle Fire as much as Star Lyre and sparkle Fire taught her.
As an Aspie myself, this makes all the meltdowns I've ever had look... well, not intense at all. Plus, she actually looks badass! I'll bet that I've always looked like a wimp during my episodes!
She is an overpowered unicorn. She has a lot of power that she isn’t quite ready for.
Enough to defend herself from a large gang of average unicorns. She can also have power bursts that let her defend an entire town. Her powers ebb and flow, which allows some flexibility in plot.
Nightlight’s big brother is similar in power to her.

An entire town? WO. I'll be she's on a level close to that of an alicorn!
I do plan to make Nightlight an alicorn eventually. In the meantime, she gets occasional tastes of what such a level of power is like.
(In MLP, I understand that a few unicorns have alicorn-like powers, including Starswirl, Starlight Glimmer, and Shining Armor.)
