Saturday Afternoon
Saturday rolled around. The air cool. People gathered around the park. Barnes and Scrap entered the park. Barnes chuckled and walked over to the small stage. He placed his equipment down and waved. “Hey Scrappy Boy! Over here!” Scrap panted raced over to the stage, nearly trying on his first steps. “Why… didn’t… you wait up!” he said out of breathe. “What don’t tell me ya’ll forgot now?” Barnes slapped the mutt on his back, nearly tumbling him off the stage. “ I told ya we’ll be playing in the park.” He added and pulled out the instruments.
A light bulb struck his brain. Barnes had been telling him for the past couple of days he would be playing in the park. And needed Scrap to come along. It was the band thing all over again. The first time with Mrs. Jenner was nerve wrecking. Felt like Scrap was just banging the cymbals around, but he felt a little more confident now. Plus… he did say yes to helping him out. So he was going to see this through.
”Ready to march, Scrappy!” He gingerly grinned.
“You remember what to bring, right?” Scrap asked.
“Mhm. Got dem all here.” The gator smirked and passed along the instrument. “Cymbals for you.. and this snare drum for me as well.” The duo checked the instruments while a few of the park goers gazed their way curiously. Barnes hit the drum a couple of times to find his groove. Scrap lifted the cymbals. Stumble a bit, but managed to find his balance. “Um… doesn’t a band need more than two people?” Scrap asked.
“Yeah… Yeah… their on their way, but it doesn’t hurt to at least give the people a show now. Right?” Scrap shrugged but agreed with his best friend. Sudden;y Barnes snapped his fingers. “Oh! Oh! One more thing!” He looked around and scavenged through the bag and plopped out their shako hats. Still in good condition from whence they first marched.
He strapped on his, a silver and purple one with a red plume, and a gold badge with a red “B.” stamped on it. “Here you go!” He handed it to Scrap. His happened to be identical to his, though his was mostly Silver and had an “S.” stamped on his Badge.
Scrap couldn’t put it on. His body was locked together trying to keep the cymbals steady. “A little help please?” He said.
“I gotcha buddy!” Barnes chuckled. He plopped the shako hat on his head. But it slipped to the left in a crooked manner. He tried it again, but it slides down and fell off. “Hold up!” He stated and strapped it on good. “There we are! Don’t you all look nice and dandy!” he chuckled. Scrap chuckled back and let out a smile too.
Scrap looked forward and spotted the crowd coming along. A few more gathered to watch the pair. “Oh, man.” Scrap said and blushed.
“Barnes looked back and laughed, “Crowds waiting. They gonna love the show we are going to put!” He chuckled and waved to the crowd. Scrap rolled his eyes and tried to move. Found that his body got used to the balance. He took a deep breath and said, “Ready?”
“MMMHHMMM. Just follow my lead!” He turned around. Scrap took a step back as his tail swung like a whip. “Alright! Lets March!……. And…… ONE! TWO! THREE! FOUR!...ONE! TWO! THREE! FOUR!……….
Barnes lead the band down the stage. Down the path drumming down his steps like a drill sergeant. Scrap missed his steps once or twice, but he got the pattern immediately. They marched around the circle fountain for times. Then they moved to the middle tree. Circled around it some more. Scrap kept smacking the cymbals on cue. Barnes drummed up a storm. Eventually, the other members showed. Adding their elements. Heck, even the little kids decided to follow around.
They marched up their way back to the stage. Barnes lead the group. “ONE! TWO! THREE! FOUR!ONE! TWO! THREE! FOUR! And Stop!” The band finished and Scrap ended with a cymbal smacked. The crowd cheered them one. Barnes and the band bow down one cue. Though Scrap missed it by a second. They didn’t care.
