Danathius cowered behind a tree for a moment: the muscles in his legs were burning from how hard he had exerted them. He had run non-stop for what felt like hours, even though it had only been minutes at best. His chest rose and fell rapidly, the mage out of breath; he was also trying to keep as quiet as possible, but that was hard while his lungs yearned for fresh air. He covered his mouth with a hand, and breathed deeply through his nostrils. Hopefully that would mask the sound of his heavy breathing enough for him to remain hidden... He was being tracked by a keen predator, and he couldn't afford to make any mistakes.
"Where are you, little one," bellowed a voice, shattering the serene silence that had momentarily blanketed the surrounding forest, "I'll be gentle when I snap you up, I promise!" The ground beneath of Danathius's feet rumbled and quaked as the owner of the voice stomped around purposefully, letting the human know that he was indeed close! Danathius peered around his tree for a moment only to spot the towering red dragon some two hundred feet away, knocking over trees as though they were mere twigs before him! The dragon's bulky form didn't fit quite well within the forest, but it didn't seem like it was slowing the great red down any! Swallowing heavily, and too scared to move, Danathius slowly slid his head back behind the tree trunk while the gargantuan, crimson-scaled behemoth lifted his great snout into the air. His nostrils dilated as he sniffed for a few moments, before he smirked to himself and lowered his head.
Danathius clenched his eyes shut, still audibly gasping for breath -- he had been run ragged, doggedly pursued by the dragon. The red was utterly relentless, and he was always just a few steps behind of the bumbling mage... Wiping the sweat from his forehead, the human finally opened his eyes, and built up enough courage to take another peek behind his hiding tree. He scanned the surrounding foliage fervently, and was shocked to find the dragon...gone! Danathius blinked in confusion -- he hadn't heard the dragon's lumbering footsteps fade away, nor had he heard the telltale beating of great wings to lift the scaled behemoth off of the ground. Where, then, had the colossal beast gone? Left and right, Danathius continued to scour the forestscape, only to realize that tranquility had returned. All was quiet, except for the sound of a gentle breeze rustling the leaves above.
Just as the mage gave a sigh, a great shadow eclipsed him. It swallowed his form entirely, and a great deal of the ground around him as well. He glanced up, hoping to spot whatever object was casting such an ominous and dark shroud over him, and there, hovering above the mage, was the red dragon. Crimson scales glistened in the sunlight, and wings silently and rapidly beat to keep the humongous creature aloft. Danathius's eyes grew wide with terror, and he stumbled back just as the great red dove downward, a huge handpaw extending out toward the mage! A great crash shook the earth and rattled nearby trees, almost causing them to topple over while the dragon slammed down into the ground, pinning the human beneath of of those enormous paws! Danathius squirmed and writhed, doing his best to try and escape from underneath the oppressive digits and claws, and just as he started to wriggle free, the great red leaned his snout in close. The dragon's eyes, orange orbs glowing with a smoldering ferocity, locked onto the trapped human immediately.
The creature, easily the size of a large house, opened his jaws just before the man. With teeth nearly the size of Danathius's arms, the mage could only stare helplessly into the fleshy cavern yawning before him. Thick strands of saliva snapped between sharp spires of enamel. A fat, wide tongue undulating in excitement, with the tip slipping out to greedily slurp over scaled lips. Hot breath kissed the mage's skin, and the hot plume of air roiled around the human just before the dragon unleashed a deafening roar, spraying saliva all over his captured victim. The sound was so intense that it rattled Danathius's bones, and he winced in pain before shaking his head.
"Astrix, I'm right here," the mage screamed, and as the human spoke those words, the great red's vicious demeanor melted away, revealing a concerned expression plastered across the drake's muzzle. Danathius only grinned, though, once the ringing in his ears subsided, and he reached up to stroke the side of the plump digit still resting on top of his chest. Astrix smiled in response, before he leaned in close, and slurped the human's chest and face with a thick, fat and pink tongue. A sparkling trail of warm saliva was left in its wake, matting the mage's robes and hair to his skin.
"I did great, though, right," the dragon beamed, tail thumping loudly behind of the dragon. The great appendage kicked up a large cloud of dust before finally growing still.
"Of course you did! That was great! Your father would be so proud," Danathius replied with a smile, "how did you get into the air so quickly and so quietly, though?"
"Oh, that close range warping spell you taught me," Astrix replied, tan chest plates puffing out proudly, "dim....dim something? What was it called again?"
"Odd, I didn't detect you using any magic," Danathius seemed to ignore the question, eyebrows furrowing up in confusion. Had he actually been too scared to try and sense the dragon spellcasting? Or had Astrix done something else...?
"Danathius. Danathius," Astrix frowned down at the human, who blinked and finally looked up at the great red, "you had that distant look again. You were lost in your thoughts again."
"Sorry, sorry, didn't mean to ignore you. But yes, that was fantastic. You're a mighty and proper dragon now," Danathius teased, winking up at the huge red. Astrix chuckled, and licked over his lips again.
"Good. Now, I really get to gobble you up, right," Astrix replied while his stomach gave a particularly loud growl.
This is an absolutely GORGEOUS commission I got from red-izak, who is lovely and a pure joy to work with. Please go give her your love and support. She definitely deserves it! Also, please favorite her submission here!

Astrix was someone I never really intended to design or capitalize upon, but my writing with cainhiryu presented him in the limelight, and the more I thought about Astrix, I wanted him to be this happy-go-lucky-goof to contrast against his father. Igmas was serious and stern, so Astrix was lighthearted and soft. Igmas started off hating humanity, but Astrix never did; he always appreciated the smaller folk. Igmas was greatly in tune with his instincts and urges, while Astrix never had the chance to hone his more draconic nature. It's never explicitly stated in anything I've commissioned or written, but Igmas is glad that Danathius is there to protect his son and to help him explore some of his more draconic tendencies when the need arises.
And yes, red-izak did an absolutely stunning job drawing these two dorks together. I'm excited for the next piece I'm getting from her. ;D

Woah, amazing to see a uvula in such a detailed art piece like this! Really amazing, and a great story!
Of course! I always aim to get a uvula drawn if there's a maw shot in something I commission. ;D
But thanks! I'm glad you like it, Raz!
But thanks! I'm glad you like it, Raz!
I like it because it looks a lot like me, all things considered. I've a bias XD
Big, red dragons are absolutely the best. I have the same bias. ;D
You've still yet to set an appointment with me, speck. Going silent as you did, I figured you'd moved on.
Ooooh hhh hoh ho my god wow!!!
That detail, dragon and background is AWESOME!!!
