I always have a bit of a love-hate relationships with crows. On one hand they just look cool, but on the other they're just sooooo black... At least with clothing i was able to bring in something other than black everywhere :')

Daaaamn.
Did you use photobashing for the clothes or draw everything by hand?

Been a little while since i finished that so i can't recall exactly, but i think clothes were mostly self painted, with i thiiiiink a photo being implemented somewhere in the shoulder area. But maybe i'm making this up, it's hard to remember some specifics off the top of my head when every day is filled with drawing and it all kind of blends together. :')
That is some hecking nice clothing they have, and oh gosh oh heck, they haven't been taking good care of those, oh no that must be an expensive getup to replace.
Oh yeah, black's tricky. Fortunately, desert ravens in particular make it easy to note iridescence! Once you fall in love with all/mostly black designs, it's worth trying to find new ways to render depths with some sneaky colours. c:
Yeah, that is very helpful to bring some definition. Though honestly i feel i generally prefer the flat and non-distinct approach to black. (not JUST because i'm lazy), but of course that always needs a painting that allows for it to work, which isn't always the case and is rather tough to get right.
I don't know how much work you've done traditionally, but something I'm really interested in for a flat black, would be mixing for it. Seems like it'd be a happy medium.
In printer ink, you add red to black to make it blacker. I don't know if that helps but I noticed your conversation underneath my comment and the reply Nomax made. And I used to work in a print shop, back in the early Dryas period.
I've never heard of just adding red before, but I do know there's Rich black that will use colours versus just using the black cartridge.
I don't know if you can do that with an inkjet printer, but I remember the red added to black made it sort of a 'shiny' black and deepened the color so that on a printed page the type stood out stronger.
Weird, that's pretty standard in high end printing, and you'll see that in printing dialogue often. We'd run an Epson that had 8 cartridges: CMYK and 50% variants for the Giclees. I was the TA at my uni's art building's lab for a few years--by no means an expert, but I picked up some things.
Something related to what you mentioned: One could print 99% black on a 100% black field, which would generate that gloss/matte difference you're talking about, allowing a subtle but slick option for a dark theme.

Good god I will never stop loving or being impressed by your art
I find black difficult too but man you nailed it so well. Those purples, blues, and reds are beautiful, not to mention the textures and details
and the outfit, just, I lack words man, beyond beautiful as always.

holy crap, i thought this was costume photography at first. had me bamboozled. amazing work
This is gorgeous - I love the realism brought to the character's head. Excellent work with all the black going on here as well. The shadowing and highlights are so beautiful, wonderfully drawing the eye to the detail of their feathers. The character's outfit is very interesting, too. I'm liking the torn up knees for some reason.
I so love the textures that you put into the piece, having this very refined look to it!
From the thumbnail, i thought it was actually a fursuit. Holy shit this is an awesome draw
