Duality

This story is told from Sapphire's point of view.
She was so fast! It was nothing Sapphire was unused to though. She’d spent years on that island, training day in and day out.
It was so small in comparison, this forest was sprawling and constantly growing, the darkness within untamed apart from those that were hunted
down by this wild Doe. She was fast, savage, and deadly, and yet seemed...adorable!
Sapphire grinned as she soared through the forest, watching Hawthorn from the side of her eye, though she squeaked as Hawthorn tripped and
suddenly fell with a hard oof.
A little amused, Sapphire skidded on her sharp hooves and quickly dashed to Hawthorn’s side, laughter in her voice as she chimed,
“Careful there, there’s roots and debris everywhere!” she let out a surprised squeak as the Doe’s rough hand met her own, wincing
as her face met the ground and letting out a sweet laugh. She lifted her head and shifted to sit down to the now-seated Hawthorn,
perking her ears as the Huntress asked her, “Where did you become so fast? Weren’t you trapped on an island your whole life?”
Sapphire, however, seemed more worried about the deep gash Hawthorn had just opened on her forehead...she had no doubt
the elder Doe was used to such pain, but she would not stand for it. She gently leaned forward and rested her hand on Hawthorn’s
gash, feeling the Doe instinctively flinch, and reassuring her gently, “That will bruise. I’ve got it.”
She watched as the water seeped into the gash, cleaning it, and leaned away, a small shred of moonlight sealing the wound, nodding before she replied.
She shrugged gently and sighed at the memory of her lonely years, mind and mouth working in tandem as she replied. “Well, when you’re alone on an
island for your entire life, you kind of form routines,” she remembered it well, days leaping from tree to tree, learning to wield the weight of Rosenkranz,
gaining control over her hydrokinesis, and dreams that left her both terrified and enthralled, wanting more. “Instead of waiting for instructions from some
invisible force or a rock in the sky, I decided to prepare myself for what the world held for me when that time came.” she wouldn’t wait for destiny.
It could wait for her. Destiny wasn’t going anywhere….she’d had enough of being a glorified beacon.
Hawthorn had been lucky; she had practice, PROPER practice, and Sapphire had, had...well, her imagination. Sometimes dummies. But they were temporary.
The Revenants were endless. She admitted it, she was a little jealous. “You’ve sort of done the same, but you didn’t know it at the time.” she chirped, blinking
at Hawthorn’s widened eyes and the sudden twinkle in her eyes. “You know things I don’t, don’t you?” Hawthorn suddenly asked, catching Sapphire off guard
for a moment, but she shrugged gently and murmured, “Perhaps, but if I tell you now, you’ll only be angry. Trust me when I say it’s best to wait.” There it was!
The questions. She knew it would happen, so she gently rested a tiny hand out and rested it on Hawthorn’s cute lips. “Please?” she felt a sad smile come to
her lips as the older Doe complied. It was clear that the Doe was inexperienced with the company, and Sapphire found it endearing.
She was trying, and it made her happy.
The attempts were sweet, and well-intended, it made her heart swell as she gently lifted a hand and stroked it through Hawthorn’s spiky locks. They were
surprisingly silky! For a moment, she expected to be stabbed like a hedgehog’s spines! She sighed softly, but smiled warmly. “Believe me when I tell you...
there’s much more going on...and we need to be prepared. We can do it though. Together.” she had meant to say it as a statement, a sense of solidarity in
the words, but it came out as a question. As if she was asking Hawthorn to join her crusade. She was worried for a moment, seeing Hawthorn look surprised,
then relief washed over her as she felt Hawthorn wrap an arm around her shoulder, the warmth of her cerise cloak covering her, protecting her from the cold.
“Together.” she echoed, Sapphire’s fears set to rest.
