"'A...tree...has...blown...down,'" Sophie read the large print words slowly and carefully.
"Very good!" Dan encouraged her, moving his finger to the net row.
"It's...coming...down...on Ted's..." The young hybrid trailed off.
"Tractor," Dan pronounced the word softly, leaning closer to Sophie's good ear.
"Tractor," she replied with satisfaction.
"Perfect"!
And so it went, the pair going through the pages of the book, Sophie telling Dan the story of a tree falling in a winter storm, and the neighbour who helps remove it.
"Farmer Dray has a big, g...gentle...cart...horse...called Dolly. They have come...to help Ted." As she finished the sentence, Sophie raised her hand, fingers arranged.
'That's right! 'Horse'." Dan held his hand out in turn, copying the sign. Sophie smiled up at her father, who beamed in return. He knew Krista would be thrilled to learn Sophie's progress when she got home, both with her reading and with her signing.
Sophie's reduced hearing had taken some getting used to on the part of the three parents. However, undeterred, they had jumped into action once the diagnosis had been issued, fixing Sophie up with a hearing aid for her working ear and signing the family up for sign language lessons as insurance. Dan and the kids had been quicker to pick it up than Krista or Alex. None of them were surprised by this; working part-time, and largely from home, he had more opportunities to try it out. They would all get there in the end; the tomcat was sure of that. All it would take was practice.

Aw, this is just sweet. I love the little family you've built up with these characters, and this is just an utterly precious moment. It's sad that the kid has hearing issues so early in life, but the way her family has rallied around her to try help her is very admirable, and adds a lovely extra touch of reality to things. Every family has its challenges that are unique to them, and if everyone is lucky, will pull together to face them. The art is just beautiful, too. Thanks for pointing this one out to me!
