โIt will not be so bad; think of all the people so happy to see you. When you arrive to the
ball in this dress, oh, theyโll gasp!โ
Sophieโs voice was an aria in spring, delivered in the softest tones. She was only visiting in
support. She was a foreign dignitary, princess to a glory-soaked warlord, yet the former
queenโs plight seemed confusing to her. Dressed in finery, attended at all hours by the
practiced hands of chambermaids and ladies-in-waiting, eating sweet things that melted
on the tongue; these were things which, to her, seemed like heaven. Certainly, that the
she-wolf princessโ father kept her locked and chained in a cage of gold seemed excessive,
but she understood how strongly men wanted to protect the women in their lives.
Aurelia sat, gazing into the vanity mirror and trying to will herself blind so that she could not
see the misery etched upon her fair features, the yoke of pearls around her neck. Every long
year of her divine life seemed like a distant dream, for she was mortal now, and with that came
the pain of a mortal heart, of a mortal body. She was unaccustomed to being nervous.
โDo you know them?โ Aurelia asked suddenly.
โYour suitors?โ Sophie replied. She was a voluptuous doe of profound beauty. In the mirror,
she admired not herself, but the roses in her thick, chestnut hair. She stood behind the other
princess, encouraging her as best she could. โNo. But it is said they are all fine and noble men
from around the world. If you could find one who treats you as well as Magnus treats me,โ she
sighed happily, โthen you would know bliss as I do.โ
Aurelia closed her eyes. The dress she wore was befitting of a young ingenue, not a seasoned
ruler. It smothered her in adorable taffeta ribbons and cloudy puffs of lace. The royal tiara,
sitting mockingly atop her head, did not give her powerโit only took it away. She felt one of
Sophieโs delicate fingers entwine admiringly in her pearlescent pink hair; how like a liquid jewel.
โWedded life is heaven.โ Sophie trilled. โI had never been happier before I met him. Imagine,
when you meet the right suitor, how your heart will flutter...โ
Aurelia did not want to imagine being sold on the auction block while a group of titled and
blooded men, her former subjects, bid on her in word and deed. She did not want to consider
the undeniable fact that her father would, in the end, be the one to choose her a husband from
those who sought her hand. She had no conception of love or of amorous emotions, for, as a
divinity, she had been protected from those things. There was a poetic tenor not lost on her in
losing power and agency but gaining mortal emotions in the trade.
The doe attending her was so young, so sheltered, lacking the wisdom of centuries, though that
wisdom was now a door closed in Aureliaโs mind. She knew she could not explain the truth of all
that had happened during her dethroning. She could not even understand it herself. Yet there
were feelings inside her that conflicted with this path that was being chosen for her, which was
merely a transfer of ownership, rather than some grand love affair.
โI do not wish to be chattel,โ she whispered into the mirror, her lip quivering. โI want... a softer
touch than a man can give.โ
Outside the walls, somewhere, that touch was waiting for her.
