For this week's personal project, I wanted to draw something themed after one of my favourite tropes, that is the "Small Badass" one.
Very much inspired by conqista's illustrations of Gadget, which you should totally check out because they are great - Trusty skewer and Rapping Goddess.
This piece was one of those. You know the type. The type of drawing you're sad to stop working on because it's so much fun. Figuring out that flamethrower proved to be really good collaboration, actually. I had two of my writer friends giving me advice, since I've never drawn or looked into how a flamethrower works. At first I was missing the can of bug spray on her back, and only had the lighter. I was concerned of making it look too cumbersome, but then it hit me. It had to be like this, because that's how to make an improvised flamethrower! Can of aerosol plus Zippo lighter equals flamethrower (and an exploded hand, don't do it kids). Couple that with a few tubes to make the connections, and the body of a fountain pen to ensure a good nozzle and shooting distance (you know how fountain pens in movies spray people in the face, as Last Crusade taught us all impressionable kids), and you have yourself a tiny flamethrower. The only issue I encountered was the flame that lights up the fluid, and yeah not even I am that big a fan of using a match, but what else could she have used? So I had her have a set of matches banded to the body of the Zippo, so when one runs out she can snap a new one and be ready to go again.
I wasn't going for complete realism, but I wanted something inventive, and badass. I like Gadget a lot, she was perhaps the best part of "Chip n Dale: Rescue Rangers" a sort of tiny MacGuyver, and in many occasions she stole the show.
Please, let me know what you think of it in the comments. I appreciate each and every single one I receive.

Thank you!

was this... *not* a straight up Ellen Ripley reference? O.o
Because this has Ripley Energy. Just throw in like, Olivia from Great Mouse Detective clinging to gadget and shabam.

It totes is! : D
Gadget already has the jumpsuit, she fits the role nicely.

What always fascinated me about RR was the constant appropriation of small objects and how they could be Macgyver'd into tools, vehicles or even weapons on a smaller scale.
Makes you wonder if anyone's ever actually built some of these and tested if they worked or not as intended. O:

What's funny is that the theme of MacGyver and the theme of Rescue Rangers are relatively similar.
I'd love to see those gizmos tried, actually.

Always hoped the guys at Mythbusters would try something like that at some point, but it seems like something to leave to only people on YouTube with a lot of free time.
Oh I would've loved to see an episode about Gadget's...er, gadgets.
As to what to use instead of the Match, perhaps a butane candle lighter?
I checked that out, a butane candle lighter seems very fancy, and too big to practically place on the nozzle without ruining the balance. I was going for items that might be common, like matches.
Woah this is awesome, always liked her, master of tinkerers, and a Zippo lighter. This is why I watch you. XD
God this pic is fantastic, I'm a huge fan of "small world" set-pieces and this is just an excellent use of props.
I take it she's the one dealing with all the facehuggers loose on the station huh XD
