"Dragons were everywhere and even if she had a weapon and was in armor instead of being naked and collared she still would have felt deeply uneasy. Rahmor drew the gaze and focus of every dragon in the room. She knew these dragons would fight, and die for him. They had that look that she had grown to recognize in well trained unicorns, devoted to a cause. The room grew quiet, the sounds of training fights, arguments, conversations and fucking dying out as they all looked to their commander, and of course, her. Dragon eyes seemed to crawl all over her. She glanced around, seeing that there were a few furries as well. Slaves for the troops enjoyment. Most were tied to bunks and looked like they had been there for a while. A few others were scattered about, holding trays of drinks or polishing leather or in one case, a long haired, dog was on her hands and knees using her own tail to scrub the floor. Tamira winced in sympathy. The poor hound's tail, while not as nice as a golden unicorn mane, was still a long, silky cream color and should be all combed and maybe decorated in a bow. Not dirty and soaked with whatever she was scrubbing off the floor. Tamira saw that the word "Mop" was inscribed on the slave's collar in big letters. Her name, or her purpose? Her thoughts were interrupted as she jerked her head around at a loud dragon voice."
-Fates of the Unicorns Chapter 54, "Rounds 4"
And here we have a cameo appearance from a character of my own, the meek submissive Afghan hound Mop. If she had a name prior to being enslaved, it's long gone now.
Is she the kind of slave that loves what she does, is happy to be there? No...and yes. Kind of. Mop is not one of the slaves who is well treated. She serves under the roughest, strongest, and most dangerous dragons in the Empire, and she does not live an easy life because of it. Day in, day out, her purpose is to clean. To use rags, sponges, and her own body to scrub, polish, and mop. The floor, the linens of the beds, the walls, the tables...perhaps her saving grace is that she is rarely called upon to "clean" the dragons themselves, as her fur is almost constantly stained with dirt and other grime. But she does what they demand of her, no matter what. It is her Place, and has been for close to five years.
What sets her apart from the other slaves made to serve these powerful dragons is her memory. She knows the name and face of every dragon she cleans for. She knows certain things about how they like to keep their beds, their trunks, their armor. When they are called to war, she alone is allowed to go through their possessions, arrange them as she knows they like, and prepare them for their return. And when, inevitably, some of the dragons do not return, she is the one who clears their bunks, takes their possessions to be redistributed, and prepares the space for the next warrior.
Mop knows how important her job is. She knows that the warrior dragons, very deep down, appreciate coming home to everything perfect and in its place, ready for them, even though she has never received and will never receive a thank you for it. She could perhaps explain to Tamira a thing or two about why slaves are so vital to the war.
My deepest thanks to Dragontalon for giving Mop a place in the FotU universe.
((Note that the explanation above isn't approved canon to FotU. This is just how I picture Mop to fit in since DragonTalon gave her the cameo.))
