"Being able to survive and act both on land and underwater, the wolfen will use bodies of water in its hunting tactics. It is a common strategy for a pack of the wolf-dolphins to divide its forces, leaving some hiding in a nearby lake, river, or sea, while the rest stay on land to trail their prey of choice. The land squad of wolfen will howl and make other threat displays to drive their quarry close to water, signaling the water squad to ambush when the time is right."
It was late at night and Tera, who knew she was supposed to be asleep, lay atop her bed, engrossed in her nature book. Enticed into the world of the vicious and beautiful wolfen, she missed hearing the late arrival of her father downstairs. Then came the knock on her door.
"Eep!" she squeaked, half-scrambling to set the book aside and switch the bedside light off before she saw who it was. "Daddy!" she exclaimed, jumping out of bed to give him a hug.
Gobe, damp and smelling slightly of rain (and something else that she didn't recognize) took her into an odd one-armed hug, hiding his other behind the doorframe. "Hey, buddy!" he said, putting a smooch on top of her head, "were you staying up for me?"
"Uh huh," said Tera, trying to get a peek at what he was hiding.
"Oh, Sweetie, I'm sorry I made you wait so long."
"It's okay, but I wish you coulda had dinner with us. Me and Mom made it together."
"Oh, I know, I smelt it when I came in." Tera saw a flash of blue as her father adjusted the whatever-it-is in his other arm. "Hopefully, this will make up for that."
"'This'? What is it?" she asked, staring behind her father with undisguised curiosity.
"I'll show you, but go sit on your bed and close your eyes," Gobe said, pointing into her room. As she did so, he asked, "So before I forget, how was today? The doctor said the first day wasn't supposed to be too bad," he said, gesturing towards her diapered bottom.
Reminded for the first time in a couple of hours of the diaper crinkling between her legs, Tera blushed as she sat down. "It wasn't, I guess. I only had an accident the one time, and I'm dry now."
"That's good," Gobe said. He leaned in and whispered conspiratorially, "That puts you ahead of your mother right now."
She snickered at that and closed her eyes, eager to find out what her father had in store for her. She heard him walk into her room and felt the bed shift as he sat down next to her. Then she felt the brush of a fluffy tail behind her head as Gobe told her to open her eyes.
Tera beheld Adorable Cuteness Incarnate. The creature stared back at her with large unblinking pink eyes. A sparkly purple gem adorned its forehead and it wore a black collar with more purple gems. Its blue and pink furred body wrapped around her father's neck, long enough to reach behind hers, as well. Its tiny grasping forelimbs and complete lack of hind limbs told her that this was a weasent, a weasel-serpent.
"EEEEEEE!!" she squealed, reaching for it. The weasent chirped and squeaked as it sniffed her outstretched hand with its twitching nose. It slithered around Gobe's neck, moving its head forward to nuzzle her palm and let its chin be scratched. Tera happily obliged, cooing, "Hello, cutie. Awww... Where did you come from? Daddy, is this a pet? Do I have a pet now?"
Gobe beamed at his daughter. "You certainly do. I know you might not think so right now, but you're a big girl. Your mother and I both know so, and we talked about it and decided you get to have a pet to take care of."
The weasent began grasping at her fingers and gently nipping them. She held her other arm out to let it coil its body around. "Does it have a name?"
"He does not," Gobe said, taking the weasent's collar off. "Though I was calling him 'Doombringer McKillingsworth' for a while..."
She rolled her eyes at her father, holding the weasent close and saying, "Don't worry, we're gonna call you 'Wiggly' from now on. Do you like that?" The weasent chirped and squeezed itself tightly around her forearm.
"He says it'll do," Gobe said, getting up. "We'll go over how to take care of a weasent in the morning, but the first thing is to let him bond with you. And to do that, you need to go to bed, little girl."
"'Bond'? You mean Wiggly's psychic?" she asked, getting up and pulling up the bedcovers.
"Most weasents are," Gobe said, giving her one more kiss as she climbed into bed, and tucking her in even as Wiggly slithered in next to her. "Good night, Tera-Lal. I gotta finally get supper." He left the girl and her pet and closed the door.
Over an hour later, the excited but very tired girl finally dozed off with her new friend.
