Illustration for Day 3 of the Leontubre 2020 list.
I made the illustration thinking about the following excerpt from the one-shot "Honey Badger" from my fanfic, Lian's Story:
"Determined to catch an antelope, I crouched down as I had practiced with the birds, and walked stealthily through the grass. I spotted a mound of dirt that could work perfectly as a concealment while observing my prey. They were the largest animals I had ever stalked until that moment. I approached the mound and climbed high enough to be able to poke my head over it and spy on the antelope.
I was just beginning to analyze them when I felt a sharp blow to my stomach. Scared and in pain, I jumped away from my hiding place. I realize then that there was a hole, fairly well camouflaged, in the mound. And from this an animal with mostly black fur, except for a white stripe that covered its head and back, peeked out. His muzzle was open, showing his teeth, and his eyes seemed to want to skin me alive.
- What the hell are you doing here, lion? - he growled. - Honey badgers don't like scum like you.
Honey Badger? What was that? I had never come across an animal of his kind before, and I couldn't do anything but watch it in surprise. It caused me curiosity, I wanted to see it more closely and know exactly what strange creature he was, but he kept looking at me in a fearsome way.
- What the fuck are you looking at? - he roared.
And without warning, he slid his elongated body out of the hole to launch himself at me. I only found out what had happened when I felt a bite on my nose. I jumped back again, but the animal followed me, growling in a strange way and threatening me with his small but sharp fangs.
- Hey, calm down - I said while avoiding his bites walking backwards.
- Stop looking at me! - and I felt a scratch on my arm.
The badger was in a whirlwind. He had turned into a cloud of bites and scratches that was difficult for me to get past. How could he be so fast? No matter how hard I tried to put distance between him and me, the animal managed, in a single jump, to get close to me again.
- Do you think that just by being bigger you can do whatever you want? I'll show you I'm going to kill you and all of yours! - he threatened, and his claws reached my cheek.
A couple of dark drops splattered the dry dirt the badger kicked up during its hustle and bustle. I realize then that I couldn't beat him, and I was forced to turn and run away.
- Where the fuck do you think you're going?! - I heard his voice, to my surprise, much closer than I expected.
Out of the corner of my eye, I caught a glimpse of him running after me, on my heels. Wasn't I going to be able to get rid of him? The idea of facing him again terrified me. And aware that it wouldn't take long to catch up with me, I jumped up to the nearest tree. I dug my claws desperately into the log and clumsily climbed up. The badger growled behind me, but didn't climb. With fear invading my body, I climbed the first branch that I found on my way. As I expected, my ill-thought-out movements caused me to stumble and lose my balance. Out of sheer inertia, I managed to grasp the branch with the claws of my left leg, and I was left dangling only from it. I felt the badger's teeth dig deep into the skin of one of my hind legs.
I roared in pain.
With my other leg, I hit him hard and managed to get rid of him... at least long enough to be able to climb back onto the branch. Once up, I dug all my claws into the wood and took a moment to catch my breath. I heard the badger growling below me, and I dared to look down. The animal leaped, struggling to catch up, but my branch was high enough that he couldn't even brush against me. Still, I didn't want to risk it, and my muscles froze in that position.
- You think you're smart, huh? Let me inform you that I have nothing to do the whole damn day and I'll stay here to wait for you - he continued. - I can wait under this tree my whole life, just let me put my claws on you!
And so it went on for another half hour. When he finally got tired of threatening me and jumping, he began to walk around the trunk of the tree. The idea of looking for an escape route crossed my mind, but the tree was not big enough and, with every movement I made, even the smallest, the badger would get underneath me again and start again the cycle of jumps and insults.
There was not way to get out. There was no way to ask for help. And don't even think about going down to face the badger again.
I wanted to cry in frustration, but it would only give the animal one more reason to get upset.
With no options in mind, I stayed on that branch until the sun got low enough to start hurting my eyes. The heat of the day had caused me a terrible thirst that dried and my throat. With nothing in my stomach, other than the few beetles I'd managed to eat at lunch, my head was starting to hurt and my belly was starting to roar in protest. My muscles felt numb after so many hours in that position.
I began to imagine that night would fall and I would still be there. That maybe then the honey badger would finally decide to climb up for me, or that some other predator would see me and attack me too. Or that nothing would happen and I would die of thirst in two more days.
I heard a snore. In fear, I lowered my gaze. The badger had fallen asleep just below me, huddled in the leaf litter of the tree. I saw my chance then.
Carefully, doing my best to keep the branch from flapping, I stood up and backed up until I reached the point where the trunk split into the four main branches it had. Digging my claws into the wood, I crept to the base of the trunk, and from there to the ground. He had never felt more joy at feeling a handful of dry earth.
The badger snored again, and I froze in dread. The last bite he had taken still hurt, but I was sure I could still run with it.
The boundary between the savanna and my home was just under a hundred meters from the tree. If I could get away a little, I could run back to the jungle. I just had to circle the litter and the fearsome badger who seemed to be completely asleep. That gave me a little confidence. I balanced on my limbs, with gentle movements, and walked further and further away from that little hell.
I hadn't walked four meters when I made the terrible mistake of neglecting where I stepped. The creaking of a branch taught me that even the smallest carelessness can lead to blunders when the badger is woken by noise. It was right in his sights.
As soon as he recognized me, he frowned again and showed his teeth.
- I told you I would be waiting for you, lion! - he yelled as he stood up to go after me. - You're going to die, I swear you're going to die!
I didn't stay much longer. Instinctively, my legs started running towards the jungle. My stiff, sleepy muscles didn't help much, and the badger soon caught up with me again. But I was so afraid that, somehow, I got enough strength to get out of his grasp, not before receiving a couple more scratches."
