Illustration for Day 23 of the Leontubre 2020 list.
This illustration belongs to a scene from the One-shot Tournament Arena from my fic, Lian's Story:
"- I have never liked your ways, Ni - said Sess. He had a wound on his forehead that dripped blood over his right eye. - But I will not ask you for a rematch this time... instead, I want to see what you have made of that apprentice of yours.
Mheetu felt a twinge in his stomach.
- What's with him? - Ni inquired. - I told you he's still a rookie.
- Are you afraid that the child will have a friendly fight with an old, beaten and drunk lion?
- It is not necessary to...
- So you deny my claim?
Laughter and whispering replaced cheers from the onlookers.
Ni retract his ears slightly, and his gaze met Mheetu. With a shake of his head he motioned for him to come down. And from the expression in his eyes, the teenager knew it wouldn't be a good idea to refuse.
Mheetu descended to the sand, careful not to slip. The terrain was too steep and the soil much looser than he expected, but all the eyes were on him and he had to pretend he didn't care. He came to his mentor's side, and Sess spoke up:
- Friends, Mheetu: Ni's apprentice - introduced him.
The crowd called out his name, and the young lion felt intimidated. He swallowed loudly.
Ni approached him and whispered:
- Don't make me look like a idiot.
Then he ran to the walls of the gully and climbed to the spot where the teenager had been watching earlier. Someone offered him more fruit and Ni ate it without taking his eyes off the boy.
Mheetu decided to stop looking at his partner to look down at his challenger. Sess moved awkwardly, maybe because of the previous fight, or because of the fruits, but even with that his appearance was still fierce. He had perfectly shaped arm and leg muscles, and thick skin decorated with scars from past battles. Mheetu was a young lion with hardly any weight gained during training, and a short mane that was just beginning to fall on his forehead.
He tried to control his fear and face the lion.
Sess attacked again without warning. He pounced on Mheetu with a leap and sent a ferocious claw at him that he could not dodge. The young lion lay on the ground, stunned, but with enough will (and terror) to move and shake off a second blow. He kicked the adult's face before running to put distance between them.
The crowd laughed.
- Did you just teach him to run? - Sess scoffed at Ni.
Mheetu found the gully to be much smaller than he would have liked, and soon his back touched the dirt of the walls, trapping him between it and the huge lion. He watched Sess crouch down and knew he would have no choice but to fight him.
Sess ran to the boy once more. Mheetu rose to his hind legs and roared, making an effort to intimidate him. But Sess ignored it and stood in front of him, mimicking his position. Standing like that, he was still taller than the teenager. Mheetu could do nothing but cover his face from the blows with his arms, resisting the pain of Sess's claws digging into his skin and ignoring the drops of blood that spattered every so often on his face.
The older then changed his strategy. He grabbed the teenager by the neck and pulled him down. Mheetu seized the moment to scratch Sess's face at eye level, and with a sudden movement he freed himself from the lion's jaws. Mheetu hit his rival's head a few more times, and then ran away from him. His arms were shaking, tattooed with threads of blood running down in all directions, and he felt like he needed to take a breath before continuing.
The laughter from the onlookers grew louder, and as this happened, Ni's ego got smaller. He knew those taunts were for him too.
Sess ran after Mheetu, jumped on him and grabbed him by the leg to knock him down and, once on the ground, grabbed him by the neck to prevent him from escaping. He kicked his body over and over again as the desperate young lion struggled to free himself. He turned his spine and managed to turn around, and in that position Mheetu had the opportunity to scratch his opponent's face with his hind legs, pushing him to force him to let go.
One of Mheetu's claws managed to dig into the older lion's nose, and when he pulled it the pain was so high that Sess had no choice but to release Mheetu. He stood up as soon as he felt his fangs move away from his skin. But the adult, proud and unwilling to lose again, managed to hit the teenager on the chin with enough force to throw him backward.
Mheetu's back slammed into the stone wall, and his body fell with a thud onto the dusty earth. Panting, Sess slowly approached him. The young man, stunned, was barely able to lift his leg to stop him.
- I give up - Mheetu said with difficulty.
That was enough to stop the older one, who immediately turned to Ni with a mocking smile. The audience burst into laughter and cheers for the champion, as the embarrassed loser got up painfully and shook the dirt from his injuries.
Before anyone added anything else, Mheetu hurried up the wall and out of the hollow with his tail between his legs. All those eyes that taunted him made him as uncomfortable as the wounds earned in battle. And as if things weren't bad enough, he ran into Ni's arrogant gaze tainted with description and anger, amid the sea of bodies.
His traveling companion quickly approached him, and Mheetu knew that it would not end well.
- I warned you! - Ni growled with a voice drowned in the alcohol of marula juice.
- Ni, I...
Ni stopped in front of him only to slap him in the face.
Mheetu returned to the ground, and the lionesses around them stepped aside to open up a circular area so they could see what was happening.
- Commit stupid things when I have nothing to do with it! - Ni shouted, approaching the boy again.
Mheetu didn't move. The older one took him by the chest and turned him onto his back. They both met eyes, and Ni's lips lifted so that the young man could see him fangs.
- Ni, please, no! He begged.
Then Yaro intervened.
- Enough! - He stood in front of Ni, covering the wounded teenager with his body. - It's enough.
Ni stared at him. But Yaro, who hadn't consumed so much alcohol and was still conscious, showed no sign of hesitation. At last Ni was the one who gave in, looked at Mheetu one last time, and without saying a word turned around. The group of lions turned away of Ni's way, allowing him to walk away in complete silence. Then gazes fell on Yaro and Mheetu. The youngest got up with regret, and imitated Ni's exit but in the opposite direction, trotting while limping on the leg that Sess had bitten him.
He heard Yaro call him a couple of times, but Mheetu had had enough of all those strangers. "
