Operational Plan 3243-C
1. Introduction.
Following the Provisional Colonial Government’s (PCG) declaration of hostilities against the Terran Confederate Union (TCU), the PCG authorized the Colonial Military Committee (ColMilCom) to go on the offensive against military targets within the TCU-controlled volume of the Terran Sphere (the so-called Core worlds).
2. Mission Overview.
The ColMilCom determined upon an attack in fleet strength upon the Centauri System, the TCU Fleet Base closest to Sol System, coordinating the attack with Operational Plan 3242-C against occupying TCU forces in the Indawo System. Support would be provided by the Imperial Fleet of the Kashlan Empire (KSE), and would consist of detailing electronic warfare ships to the plan, as well as a ‘demonstration’ in division strength against the Lalande System.
3. Objectives.
The primary objective of the operation was to destroy as many TCU units as possible and render the support facilities (dockyards, replenishment and repair facilities, etc.) unusable. Secondary objectives included attacking military targets on the TCU worlds in the system. Noncombatant targets were specifically excluded by PCG order.
If the primary objective could not be met, the objective was to cause attrition to the TCU Fleet and damage to the secondary objectives while withdrawing into Colonial space.
4. Order of Battle, Colonial Second Fleet.
Battleships: Shiva (force flag, Admiral Tsien Paul), Ahuramazda, Shaitan
Cruisers: Tourmaline, Feldspar, Magnetite, Agate, Raja Ashoka
Destroyers: Furious, Daring, Boisterous, Bold, Intrepid, Audacity, Dagger, Katana
KSE Imperial Fleet Department (Azrin Kirfrelyatz): 16th Electronic Warfare Detachment (5 ships)
5. Battle Plan.
The plan was to split the fleet into two divisions and attack the anchorage and dockyards from opposing vectors. Intelligence reports as to the number of ships and the system defenses following the earlier KSE attack on Centauri favored this tactic, as the TCU Fleet had sent units to contest the KSE incursion against Lalande and were engaged with the First Fleet at Indawo and with KSE and Colonial units elsewhere on the perimeter of Core space.
The KSE units would approach first via hyperspace and attempt to counter the defense sensors in order to conceal the Fleet’s approach. They would then use various encrypted means in an effort to confuse the system defense AIs and glean as much intelligence as they could. In the event they were detected or came under attack, the Detachment had orders to withdraw as rapidly as possible.
6. Operations.
A. Electronic Warfare.
The KSE Detachment began operations at 1501, and succeeded in establishing several sensor ‘ghosts’ that provoked a response by the TCU forces, scattering them as the two divisions approached. The ships remained in hyperspace throughout the operation. Attempted infiltration of the defense AIs [REDACTED].
B. First Division.
First Division (Shiva, Shaitan, Feldspar, Magnetite, Audacity, Dagger, Katana) outphased at 1545 and were immediately engaged by seventeen ships of the TCU Fleet. The opposing ships consisted of one battleship, two cruisers, and fourteen destroyers, and a melee quickly developed. The TCU lost five destroyers, with six more damaged after they made a concerted but not coordinated attack on the two Colonial battleships. Shaitan then engaged the TCU battleship Cao Lo, leaving Shiva and the cruisers to engage the remaining TCU ships.
C. Second Division.
Second division (Ahuramazda, Tourmaline, Agate, Raja Ashoka and the remaining destroyers) outphased at 1545, brushed aside a defense cadre of six TCU destroyers and began to attack the base defenses directly. The destroyers were detailed to attack the dockyards and support facilities. Raja Ashoka was lost to fire from the base defense systems.
D. Disengagement.
At 1619, Admiral Tsien aboard Shiva ordered all Colonial forces to disengage and return to Colonial space. Boisterous had been lost to enemy fire, and the Furious rammed the TCU cruiser Windsor with the loss of both ships.
7. Damage Assessment.
Intelligence estimates based on sensor logs from the attacking force indicate that the Centauri fleet dockyards and support facilities were degraded by an aggregate of 35%. It is estimated that it will take several months to repair and replace the facilities.
The TCU lost one cruiser and ten destroyers, while the other ships suffered varying degrees of damage.
Colonial losses included the cruiser Raja Ashoka and destroyers Boisterous, Furious, and Dagger (which suffered a catastrophic failure of its hyperfield while returning to base). There no reports of Imperial losses.
The assessment of PCG Intelligence is that repeated raids of this type, while having proved effective, may begin having higher losses as the TCU shifts tactics from offense to defensive operations as more KSE units take the offensive. Planning has already begun to ensure more flexibility in future large-scale operations.
End of Report.

Decided to do this vignette as a report, since none of the characters are directly involved.

You have to admit, though, Boisterous sounds like a good name for a destroyer.
I'm partial to Shaitan. If I hadn't already plunked for Lysistrata...
With respect to the TCU, one is reminded of Casey Stengel's comment about the 1962 Mets: "Can't anybody here play this game?"
Right now, they're surrounded (hence use of the word 'core'), but have a defensive advantage because of interior lines of communication.
So the battleships are all deities, the cruisers are minerals (except for Raja Ashoka), and the destroyers are adjectives associated with bravery (except Dagger and Katana, which are weapons).
The Deity-class battleships are older than the Confed's Wargod-class, and the cruisers and destroyers are a mix of classes.
well that about sums it up... but I want to read the redacted parts...
