Nausicaä's vision returned to her in a blur. Her eyelids worked to sluggishly wipe the fog away. Her hearing was muffled, her groggy body taking its time to properly respond to the return of its consciousness. She brought her arms behind her to push herself up. A hand went to her forehead, running through her hair as the numbness slowly faded away.
"Ugh ... hnn?" she groaned. "What happened to me?"
She certainly didn't remember falling asleep calmly or peacefully. So how did she ...
... But then she remembered. Her evening stroll. Discovering Utsu and his followers, and the terrible acts they were planning. She remembered being taken, fighting back ... the horrible taunting ... her emotions pushed well over the edge ... the blow that knocked her out.
In remembering that last part, her eyes shot open and she launched herself into an upright position.
And yet, as she looked around, she didn't appear to be in their midst any longer.
She was ... in her own room. On her own bed. As if last night was but another ordinary evening, ending the same as any other. She was safe, presumably surrounded by loved ones and those she could depend on.
Or ... could she? How many more of her people were plotting against her? After such a startling discovery, she had no idea who she could fully trust anymore. Outside of a select few she'd stake her life on, anyone could have some sinister motive that she had been completely oblivious to.
Rarely had a thought terrified her so greatly.
It was only then that the muted sounds became clearer to Nausicaä's ears.
There was ... screaming. The sounds of heavy objects falling. The crackling of what sounded like a sizeable fire, its heat creeping into her room. Insects could be heard, clearly sounding like they were on the attack. Suffering, of a sickening variety ... with all of it seeming to be happening right outside her door.
Nausicaä warily got up out of her bed. With great caution, she crept her way over to her door, dreading each and every step she took. Her head began spinning as the shouts and upheaval gradually grew in volume, forcing herself to keep going.
Her hand trembled as it reached out to the doorknob ... turned it ... opened the door ...
... And rather than the narrow stone hallway she would usually be greeted with, instead she then saw the outside world of her Valley ... in complete and utter chaos.
The well-tended, bustling fields were no longer in such a pleasant state; they had been overrun by massive plants and spores that seemed to have come out of nowhere and grown out of control. Such wildlife didn't just stop with the land itself, however; it had grown through people's houses and homes, shattering windows, forcing occupants out. Massive roots were sprawled everywhere, and had wrapped around structures with such great force that many of them were already collapsed into ruin from the weight.
Much of the land was on fire, a bright orange blaze shining mightily as it tore through the Valley. The apparent cause was the volley of giant fireballs coming from the sky and crashing down, each impact sending more civilians into a frenzy and burning through man-made and natural establishments alike.
And among it all, people were screaming and fleeing in terror. Men, women, and children cried out, desperate to get away from the fire and foliage overpowering their home at seemingly every corner. They shoved one another out of the way to escape, leaving each other to the wills of this mayhem, no one even attempting to try and save their friends or family.
Behind her, Nausicaä suddenly heard what sounded like her bedroom wall being busted down. Surely enough, she turned around and saw that a set of hulking teal-green roots had broken through. They slithered around her room, with a few coiling themselves around her bed and squeezing it until it shattered, others breaking through the floor to further infiltrate the castle.
The room itself then began mysteriously changing. Its textures became distorted as they started shifting. The stone walls appeared to be transforming right before her very eyes ... into spores, plant life, a tiny jungle forming right in her own room ... or rather, from her own room!
Nausicaä screamed out in horror, forced to dart out into the carnage outside as her bedroom was overrun. But this left her in hardly a better spot; she was now right in the middle of the catastrophe that was her home being torn apart.
As she sped across the terrain, what was happening in her room had already spread across the Valley. The slight, surreal haze over everything grew more prominent, and she could see more and more structures make the violent transition to becoming wildlife themselves to their very core. From the windmills to the buildings to the wells, it was all dissolving into this new jungle.
"Someone help us!!" a civilian screamed.
"No! Let us go!!"
"It's no use!! RUN!!!"
Nausicaä didn't know what to do; she just kept running, trying to make some sense of this horrifying madness! Teal roots continued to burst out of the ground as they wrapped themselves around the world. They seemed to grow more aggressive as more fireballs assaulted the earth, as if to counter the attacks and keep control of the growing jungle ... and innocent people ended up trapped in the crossfire, utterly helpless to escape both the perilous flames and the relentless roots.
As each second passed, only more destruction ensued, and the cries of despair and terror continued.
"HELP!!!"
"EVERYONE FOR THEMSELVES!!!"
Nausicaä's heaving breathing quickened as she kept going, her eyes as wide as saucers as she witnessed the collapse of everything she held dear. Looking behind her, it was as if her castle was never even there at all, replaced by a frenetic mess of roots and spores that only continued spreading, chasing down any civilian who dared be present in its new home. She had no direction in mind; such a thing wasn't even possible, thanks to the ceaseless fires clashing with the growing new toxic jungle, and the hordes of people fleeing for their lives intercepting the princess's path.
"YUPA!!" Nausicaä cried out at the top of her lungs. "MITO!! ASBEL!!" Her voice was useless, however, lost to the sea of other screams and demolition, swallowing her cries.
The princess stopped in her tracks once she was in a somewhat-clear spot. She heaved in a panic, frantically turning her head, looking in every direction through the growing distorted haze to see if something - anything - could be of any help to her!
She cupped her hands around her mouth. "YUPA!! ANYONE!!!"
This still position, however, proved to be a fatal mistake.
Before Nausicaä could even register the sound of multiple roots bursting from the ground right beneath her, they were already firmly coiled around her ankles, wrapping them together. Nausicaä shrieked as she struggled to keep herself from falling over, but in that time more of the roots went to wrap around her waist and chest. They squeezed tightly, while the ones at her feet rapidly climbed up her knees and thighs with equally cruel constriction.
They crawled all around her, grasping her arms, all far too quickly and in too great a number for her to react to each one. The girl tried to pry the coils off her, but a few just came up and bound her left arm to her side. More went for her remaining arm, and though she desperately tried to keep it away from the same fate, the teal roots easily managed to securely pin it as well.
"No! Help me!!"
The large roots still kept coming, now making their way up to coil around her head. They weaved through her thick hair, around her neck, and several crawled over her mouth, squeezing tightly to gag the poor girl.
"HelMMRRRMMH!!!!"
As the roots only continued to overwhelm her, Nausicaä flailed and struggled for her life, wobbling in the building cocoon that only squeezed tighter with each tug and wiggle on her part. She screamed for help, but the coils held her mouth firmly and heavily muffled her cries.
Soon her slender frame could no longer even be made out, the hulking roots completely encasing it as she squirmed and writhed, shrieking through the coils around her mouth. "NNRRRMM!!! MMRRRRPH!!!"
Once it all became too much for her body to take, the princess finally fell over, collapsed onto her wrapped-up knees.
Her body was being crushed. The roots squeezed, tighter, tighter, until she could barely feel anything anymore and strained heavily to simply breathe through her nose.
"Mmmmph!!"
Nausicaä watched helplessly as her world continued to fall to ruins. The Valley couldn't be recognized anymore, nearly completely morphed into just another part of the toxic jungle, fully ensnared in roots just as she was. She watched as more and more people fell victim to their constriction, with the rest of them shoving, stepping, and clamoring over each other to make a desperate escape, only fearing for themselves.
Tears came to her eyes, unable to be seen once more tendrils coiled over the brown orbs, blocking her vision and completely encasing her in the cocoon.
"Mmmgh!"
As she collapsed onto her side, Nausicaä was unable to see the roots then begin to merge themselves with the ground, becoming one with the land ... burying her with them.
All she could process was the pain, the crushing, the turmoil, the dulling of her senses as she felt herself fading. Her muffled screams grew dimmer as she lost her strength, wiggling weakly as the cocoon completed its merge and she was buried deeper into the ground.
Only one thought could come to her as she suffocated in her dying moments.
Why ... Why is this happening??
... Why ...
"AHHH!!!"
Nausicaä shot up swiftly as she finally woke up from her nightmare. She gasped and heaved in a fit of breaths, as the real world returned to take her away from that catastrophe, those roaring fires, those terrible tendrils.
Unfortunately, what she was now left with wasn't exactly a relief ... nor was her body much less restrained.
She was back in the small house on the edge of the Valley, where she had lost the emotionally-charged battle with Utsu, Nigai, Gisei, and the other Valley traitors. Twisting her head around, she saw Utsu and Nigai at her side, prompting her to instantly lash out at them.
But it was then that Nausicaä realized that her limbs would not respond as she'd intended. And when she looked herself over, she audibly gasped as she saw exactly why.
Her legs had been tied together with sturdy coils of light-brown rope. Roughly six coils had been wound around her ankles, digging into her boots, and an equivalent amount was bringing a sharp sting to her more exposed thighs as they bound them just above the knee. Behind her back, Nausicaä could feel her wrists brought together and tied just as tightly.
She also noticed looser rope around her torso, apparently not yet finished being applied. Wanting to make sure that didn't happen, Nausicaä urgently rolled and scooted herself away from her captors, kicking herself along the ground. Unfortunately, it did her little good, as she only managed to move mere inches before Nigai and Gisei quickly rushed over and held her in place, grabbing her feet and forearms respectively.
"NOO!! LET ME GO!!!" Nausicaä screeched, tossing herself wildly and making the captors' job of keeping her still rather difficult.
Acting fast, Utsu grabbed additional rope and hurried over to behind the struggling princess. He took the rope around her torso, brought it back to its un-slackened state, and despite the difficulty, managed to finish his work and pull the ropes tightly with a secure knot at her back.
"Agh!!" Nausicaä cried as the cords harshly hugged her arms and middle, keeping her from bringing her already-restrained arms away from her sides.
The captors let up on her afterwards, satisfied that the princess was properly and thoroughly restrained. They were the only ones remaining in the house; once Nausicaä had been knocked out, the group of traitors had wrapped up their session and disbanded, leaving these three with the responsibility of keeping the girl under control while the others headed out.
Nausicaä struggled valiantly against the ropes. She kicked and twisted as their fiendish grip seemed to tighten with each move she made. She felt them burrowing further into her compressed gloves and suit as her wrists and arms pulled with all their might. A searing burn shot up in her wriggling upper legs as the ropes rubbed themselves into her skin.
"LET ME GO!!!" she repeated indignantly. "YOU CAN'T DO THIS!!!"
At this point, Utsu had begun to walk off and leave the bound Nausicaä to her pointless struggles. But at this outburst, he turned around sharply. He stomped towards her with contempt clear on his face, to which Nausicaä responded by recoiling herself, her bound knees brushing against her rope-wrapped chest.
"You should consider this a mercy, princess," Utsu barked. "We could easily kill you here and now should we please. But we don't wish to take such drastic measures with our own princess ... Unlike you, we place value in our own kind."
"Mercy?!" Nausicaä shouted as she kept stretching against her bonds. "How dare you claim to have any idea of what merciful is! You've all gone mad!!"
"Judge us all you want, Nausicaä!" Utsu shouted back. "But you fail to see that I am looking out for our people more than you ever have! Your soft heart has left you weak, forcing us to do what's necessary to return our home to safety!"
"By bringing yourselves to their level?!" Nausicaä said. "Killing innocent people?!"
Utsu had enough then. He stormed over and grabbed Nausicaä by the collar, lifting her up as she squirmed futilely in his hold. "I am not those blasted heathens! They have already made the first move! I am simply defending! Fighting back!"
He threw the bound princess down as he continued to steam. Nausicaä grunted at the impact onto the stone floor, worming herself back to sit upright as she ignored the new aches sent through her body.
"Unlike you, who would stand by and allow the Tolmekians to step all over us, even after they killed your father," Nigai weighed in, more calmly than her partner in crime. "You, who would let those who tried to destroy us all simply go on with their lives, facing no consequences, free to attack us yet again ... tell me, princess, where is the righteousness in that?"
Nausicaä didn't say a word throughout Nigai's speech. She didn't even struggle. She merely glared up at Utsu and Nigai, her auburn eyes growing harder and more contemptuous with every word the latter spoke. Her lips nearly snarled as her body tensed up in her ropes ... and yet, much to her shame, the princess had to also hide the part of her that was indeed wary of the Pejites, and of giving them their second chance. She had to ignore how demoralizing it had felt to give in when the Tolmekians attacked, putting up no resistance even as the Valley cried for their freedom. The helplessness she felt when refusing to fight back.
"Don't pretend you don't feel it too," Utsu continued, as if pushing right past her facade and seeing her uncertainties. "The rage. The desire to act. You feel just as I do ... The difference is, I possess the strength to do something about it. I will not dishonor my father's death as you did yours."
"Strength is not giving into that rage!!" Nausicaä fired back, trying to swallow down the truth within Utsu's words. "There is good in them, I've seen it! I-I know they can be better than that! But we have to be better than that!"
Utsu took in a deep breath, bringing his fingers to the bridge of his nose. The gentleman paced back and forth, the agitation and malice inside him continuing to build as he seethed. Nigai and Gisei simply stood there, looking on with little expression on their faces. All while Nausicaä continued her urgent struggle, once again failing to budge these tight bonds an inch. She could hear the sound of the ropes against rubber, the creaking as they resisted the stretching and pulling of her sleek body, refusing to let up even slightly. She grunted as she continued, eyes squeezed shut, trying to ignore the discomfort and claustrophobia from these resilient bonds.
Come on! I have to get out of here, now!!
Eventually, Utsu was ready to turn back and approach her again, seeming to have been deep in thought throughout his pacing.
"Do you really think that prince you're so fond of was not in on the Pejites' plan? That he is not merely trying to deceive and corrupt our people at our very core: you?"
Nausicaä yelled out at this, trying to kick him once he was close enough. But Utsu backed up casually, leaving her bound legs to flail aggressively yet uselessly.
"No matter," Utsu said. "As we execute our plan, I will personally ensure that his influence can be a threat never again."
Upon hearing this, Nausicaä froze completely. "... What??"
Nausicaä's heart had already been pounding beneath the ropes ... but that one sentence from Utsu seemed to double its rate. For what the felt like the thousandth time in recent memory, the princess's deep brown eyes widened in absolute shock.
Utsu saw her mind coming to its dreaded realization, and sent her a knowing glare to silently confirm it as correct.
"... No ..." Nausicaä uttered.
... Asbel was one of the Pejites they planned on killing and framing.
"NO!!!" Nausicaä swiftly lunged forward, completely forgetting how her bonds would render it useless and send her planted back to the floor. "You leave him alone!! DON'T YOU DARE LAY ONE FINGER ON HIM!!!"
Her soul felt like it had been set on fire, her body suddenly completely oblivious to the grip of the ropes as it fought with all its might to break them. She bucked and thrusted with all of her strength, continuing to try and pitifully lunge at her malicious captors.
"Enough, Nausicaä!" Nigai ordered. "Nothing you do can stop this now!"
"HELP!!!" Nausicaä screamed, desperately trying to get the attention of any possible passerby! "SOMEONE, HELP!!! PLEASE!!! HELP ME!!!"
The three captors shot their gazes at each other with worry, before quickly nodding and taking further action. Nigai rushed behind the still-screaming Nausicaä, pulling out a pair of thick white cloth fabrics.
Nausicaä remained oblivious to them in her crisis. "PLEASE, HELP!!! THEY'RE GOING TO KILL-ARRGGGMMPPH!!!"
Her screams were cruelly cut off as Nigai stuffed one of the heavy rags into Nausicaä's mouth. The princess nearly retched and recoiled, trying to spit the foul material out. But before it could escape, Nigai then took the other white cloth and wrapped it over her mouth and chin. She brought it behind her head, weaved it through her rich red locks, and tied a knot there as viciously tightly as possible.
"NNRRRMMH!!! NRRMMNNMMMPH!!!"
Nausicaä's voice was pained, terrified, filled with as much panic and ire as she could ever remember feeling, strained as she lost all remaining self-restraint within her ... and yet because of these cloths now effectively gagging her, none of that mattered. She was now kept quiet enough to make detection a gravely small possibility. Her words were now nothing but worthless noise, closer to the screeching of a wounded animal than any form of human speech.
She grunted fiercely as she desperately shook her head to dislodge the gag, but it was far too well-tied, only serving to further ruffle her thick red hair. Her arms wrenched themselves against the bonds in a vain attempt to reach up and yank it off. Her long legs bucked and pulled to snap their ropes so that she could make a last-ditch flee for freedom, her skirt flapping up and down as a result.
"RMMMMGHMMH RMMMGHMMH, YMMMMNNPHRRNPH!!!"
"Scream all you want!" Utsu barked as he hovered over her. "You will not stand in our way again! Once we're finished, the entire Valley will turn on those filthy Pejites. They'll be driven out for good, and our peace will finally return ... That is what you wanted, isn't it, princess? Peace?"
"PHMMPHNNPHNMMRRPH!!" Nausicaä tried to bellow past her gag. "YRRNNMM NNPHNNNH!!!"
How can you call this peace!?! Nausicaä thought. She launched herself at her captors yet again, her bound fists tightly clenched behind her back as she predictably fell back down. Her hair concealed most of the cloth around her head, swaying violently as she fought to remove the gag. Her boots stomped at the floor, scraping at the stone, her shoulders bulging out above the ropes as she yanked them with everything she had.
This can't be happening!! I can't let them do this!!
"I take it she can't stay in the Valley?" Nigai turned to Utsu, leaving the bound and gagged princess to her struggling and muffled cries.
Utsu shook his head solemnly. "Whatever we decide of her fate, that is correct. The princess must be sent away, never to come back and never to be found by anyone in the Valley.
"NNMMMHH!!!" Nausicaä shrieked in response.
"We'll have to come up with something, and fast," Gisei weighed in, ignoring the gagged girl. "We can't just have her disappear with no explanation. It would raise suspicion should it happen to anyone, let alone the princess."
"Indeed. This adds a new wrinkle to things," Nigai said. "But we can work something out. What's important above all else is that she remains with us ... and that she is given no freedoms of movement or speech in that time."
In agreement, the villains all turned to Nausicaä, who was still fighting for her life as the spirited girl she was. The princess was on her back now, tossing herself in any way she could, too caught up in her frenzy of fear to see how futile such efforts were.
She was trapped. Bound, gagged, and in the possession of these mad traitors. Nothing she did could change that now.
Utsu waltzed over to the poor princess, an all-too-cocky smile plastered onto his refined features. Consumed by his shadow, Nausicaä paused to look up back at him, growling intensely through her gag and shooting the most menacing glare she could muster in her current state.
"Enjoy the last of your time in this Valley, Nausicaä," Utsu said. "Because tomorrow, your one-way trip awaits you."
"RRRRNNNMM!!!" Nausicaä resumed her fight, harder than ever.
With a chuckle at her pathetic plight, Utsu left the captive at that. He went back to join his fellow plotters, and the trio proceeded to formulate their newest needed additions to their plan, as well as discussing shifts on watching the bound and gagged princess.
But none of that registered to Nausicaä. The sights and sounds of the world around her may as well have faded away; the only thing she could feel was her struggle. The pounding in her head. The choking feeling of the tight gag restricting her breathing as she screamed, hyperventilating through her nose. The ropes creaking against her clothes and yet showing no signs of weakening as they constricted her lithe form. Her eyes squeezing shut as aches shot throughout her body with each ineffective move she made.
But most of all, the fear. The fear that she would lose any chance she had at uniting the Valley with the Pejites. The fear of Asbel's death. The fear of being taken away from her cherished home forever, never seeing anyone she loved ever again ... maybe even killed herself. Her fate was completely out of her own hands.
The Pejites needed her! He needed her! These fiends would get away with this monstrous plan if she couldn't get herself free!
"MMMPH!! NNMMMH!!!"
Why ... Why is this happening?!
Why?!
Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, and the characters of Nausicaä, Asbel, and Yupa, all belong to Studio Ghibli. The image used was made by Yalleo.
With as much laser-focus as I could muster (which also meant not engaging with you all as much, so sorry about that), Chapter 3 has arrived! And of course with it, Nausicaa's proper distress! :D
Originally, because of what felt like the most natural point to end this chapter and start the next one, Part 3 was going to be on the much shorter side than every other chapter of the story. But then, I realized that this was a perfect opportunity to include some sort of dream sequence, and ... well, you can guess my motivation for the route I chose. ;) I admittedly didn't plan for it to go on for this long, but my imagination went places and I didn't want to cut it down, so there you go. ;P Though I'd said it was going to make this a much longer chapter, it turned out to be roughly the same length as the other two once all the revisions were done, so go figure. Regardless, it added some extra meat and distress to the upload, including a bookend with her reality, so I hope it was worth it!
Oh yeah, and the part where she's actually awake! XD The stakes actually manage to ramp up, with Asbel now revealed to be a target of Utsu and company's plot. Of course, our fiery princess isn't happy about that at all, and it'll surely pile on to her already-terrible emotional state! It was also nice to continue my trend of having more hero-villain dialogues before said hero is silenced ... though obviously the silencing is still just as sweet! ;)
Part 4 is going to be tougher to write than the others due to me having to keep track of a good deal more. Plus, with me ramping up my job hunt and preparing to go back to school, time won't be quite as plentiful (which is partially why I was so determined to finish this). So I don't know quite how long it'll take, but at least one of the main selling points of the story has finally arrived! I hope you like it, and hope you plan on sticking around to seeing where it goes! Thanks for reading, faving, and/or commenting! :D
Nausicaa's gag speech translated:

"RMMMMGHMMH RMMMGHMMH, YMMMMNNPHRRNPH!!!" - "LET ME GO!!! LET ME GO, YOU MONSTERS!!!"
"PHMMPHNNPHNMMRRPH!! YRRNNMM NNPHNNNH!!!" - "THIS ISN'T PEACE!! YOU'RE ALL INSANE!!!"
