Hey, happy to see you here! This is my entry to the Express Yourself Contest 2021. Hope you enjoy the tune ~ I saw others do the same, so I guess I'll leave a bit of nerdy stuff about the track below ^-^
On the process:
After spending 14 hours on the mix and now five hours on the master, I can finally call it a wrap! This song was actually a really old abandoned idea. It was supposed to have multiple sections, all working with the same melody, but every section modifying it and making it sound "harder" in a different way. Like, starting with a soft piano, going over pop and rock and finally ending up on dubstep. The transitions were supposed to be small intonations of the vocal "I Need More" which easily provided a title that I kept until the end. All I did back then was the final drop section though, with a super cheesy bass, and the composition of the starting piano part that I never recorded.
So, as I thought otherwise the project might never be touched again, I made the choice to have it express myself in one minute with just the piano/vocal and the drop section. In fact I do like the piano, singing and dubstep most out of all musical things right now, so I think it fits the contest ~
I started by recycling that old bass into a subtle stereo layer, being distorted with a newer, already pretty squary bass preset I made weeks ago but didn't use yet. I renewed the drums and divided the sidechain into the low bands and high bands as I'm doing with all my tunes now. Leotrix's remix of Follow Me by ShockOne got a super interesting flow that was a big inspiration for the drop melody. MFreqShifter provided nice transitional effects. The low-end of the main bass actually worked super well as a sub and I only used one other bass patch, so I just kept those instead of making a separate sub.
Soon it was time to record the piano part. God that took looong. Every time I played it, my brain wanted to add little variations and extras to that 30 second long section, so in the end it was about 2 hours to record that perfect take on my Roland FP-10.
Finally, the vocals. It's funny - the lyrics used to rather fit the idea of a song named "I Need More" than my actual personal situation until the song was almost done and some .. private relationship stuff happened. All good though, no worries!
What took me so long on the master in the end, was saturating the dubstep part without distorting the vocals. My final go was to split up my mastering chain on the two sections, which I never did before but was kinda obvious to do in retrospective.
So here we are. Thanks for reading, thanks for listening!
Lyrics:
My life is perfect
I finally used to be certain
Yet I feel the same
As before
My plans've been missing
One simple part
My heart's sole aim
I need more

Maybe that's a good time to promote my YT then, though I'd like to be more modest :D https://www.youtube.com/c/ZefParisoto
Feel free to ignore that and know my gratitude uwu

I have to say, every time I heard this in the musician's contest I was absolutely floored. I love the mix of different styles and how smooth your vocals are in this one.
Your voice is an instrument with a personality I hope to meet again. Your lyrical expression reminded me a bit of one of my favorite singers, Rufus Wainwright. The rest of the song was like the roller coaster ride that seems longer than it actually was because it was such fun. Good stuff dude, following you for sure.
Can't say thanks enough!! Hope you'll like my upcoming songs of course, I'm really excited to share them!
Damn, Rufus Wainwright did that wonderful rendition to Hallelujah which was on Shrek if I remember right ~ gotta listen again sometime.

Oh my dude! Rufus has a decent back catalog but when he sings a Leonard Cohen song like Hallelujah it is just magic!
Make sure to check out the two other songs of his he covered, Everybody Knows and Chelsea Hotel. I hope you enjoy these as much as I do. You have this talent and I wish you every success.

Oh yes, those are beautiful!

Ah, this was one of my favs in the contest, and I definitely voted for it at least once. :D Got a long version?
Hehe thanks! Naah I wish, but this feels finished already, don't want to touch it again! It actually started from a really old abandoned file that was supposed to be the long version one day and, well, it .. got abandoned :D
I was listening now to last year finalists. The vocal part at the begining was PHENOMENAL. Really superb work. I personally I'm not that much into dubstep so the second part wasn't as impactful or pleasing to me, and it's so extreme that I think might have worked a little against you. Still, this song is SOLID god damn! The mix is so clean and the song is so interesting! You've earned a fan
